View Full Version : Skiing the Auto Road

Has anyone ever skied the auto road from the summit all the way down to the bottom? I was up there on Saturday and wound up summiting in the best weather I have ever seen on Mount Washington. I didn't have the skis with me but judging by the snowfields I can imagine the auto road would have been a beautiful run. Can you ski all the way down from the parking lot on your own or do you need a pass or something from Great Glen Trails? If so, how much does it cost? etc. I am planning to do that next year as it seems like it would be simply and amazing ski.

Thanks for any info.

I don't know much about that but I'ld join you on that run! I've thought about that very often.

Hmmmm... perhaps a nonstop downhill run? http://www.timefortuckerman.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif

The COG !!

Phhpt....~!

What a supid idea, What a way to sell out.

Total exploitation of an area that really isnt worth skiing.

Even though it would be fun, I think people should stop and think weather or not it SHOULD be done, insted of weather or not it COULD be done.

Leave Mt.Washington to the skiiers/hikers that dont need lifts.

If I hear someone say "I skiied Mt.Washington" through the means of the COG and with out skiing it any other fashion, I'll smack them right then and there.

Am I the only one who feels this way?

Sorry if I am.

Whats next CONDOs !

I am just talking about hiking up the lion head winter route or Tux and then skiing down the road. If they ran shuttles all day every day like it seems they do the cog, then I would be seriously annoyed.

Do you have any info on whether you need a pass or something to ski the auto road??????

No dude, ur totally right. The only true way to ski Mount Washingtona nd get the full experience is with your gear on your back. I hate the cog (in skiing terms-it is a really cool thing though, the machine and all) and I hate the idea of all those tourists who say they skied the presidentials via the cog.

I still don't understand how the cog railway gets intertwined with Tucks ski discussions. It is irrelevant. It doesn't access real skiing, It doesn't allow skiers to the summit.

People complaining about the cog are like folks who move into the Fenway section of Boston and complain about Red Sox game traffic. The cog has been there longer than anyone has been alive. It is a living museum, (and it keeps some people employed). From a pollution standpoint, it does much less damage than all of us who use our cars to get to the mountains.

Good point. Sometimes it sounds like, "It's my mountain, go find your own mountain... na na n'NA na!!!"

I don't understand how violence ever gets intertwined with skiing discussions. Seems like an inherent contradiction to me.

Change of topic- why do I have an urge to release 100 pent up chickens into the workspace right now?

Cause you're Free Bird? As long as you don't release them halfway up the headwall. I saw someone's dog stuck up there this weekend. Imagine skiing through a flock of scared chickens. Better bring the goggles.

Back on Topic here:

People from the observatory ski down the auto road all the time. They usually take a LOT of short cuts, over steeps, through the trees, etc. to liven the run up a bit.

Great Glen does not own the Auto Road, The Mt Wash. Auto Road charges a fee to drive a car up, all other use of the road, up or down, is free.

I too would join you on that trip, WITH the short cuts :D, and on a warm day the cat tracks shouldn't set up too much tooth chatter.

This is not true. Great Glen and the Auto Road are the same company. They groom it in winter and charge a fee for anyone using it on skis or snowshoes, or at least they have in past years. While I doubt they post people up there to check tags, they don't want you up there on skis while Great Glen is operating unless you have purchased a trail pass.

As far as I know, they do own the Auto Road. Since it's only groomed up to the 4 mile mark in winter I think above that you are OK.

They've already started clearing the road for summer use. No bikes are allowed except on bike race day, and only for riding up, you can't ride down.

I skied OJR to the auto road and skinned up just for the hell of it. I skied down and returned to Pinkham via Connie's Way. I believe I remember seeing signs posted by Great Glen. Something to the effect of having to pay a fee if proceeding beyond the sign.

Same situation. Stop tweaking out man.

and to answer you Auto Road Question:
No I wouldnt feel the same way towards that because they are going about it on their own, and using their own means of transportation, not some PRE-Fab'ed route that has been pre determined and planned out for them.

Plus if you leave you car and ski -lets say- Great Gulf, you have to climb back up and get your car, unless you have a remote control and your BATMAN.

Do you think the auto road is too flat to ski down if you stay on it the whole time? That is what I originally wanted to do, b/c I wouldn't say I'm comfortable taking shortcuts down Mount Washington yet...

I thought about posting again on this topic.

What turned into a Light Hearted clechie comment was blown out of preportion.

DMC.

You take things out of context and convolude them to fit your strange perception of things.

the Murder thing was an example, re-read it with that in mind.

and your telling me you cant see a difference between using the Auto Road and the COG? Whoa I expected more from you dude.

I think using the COG for skiing is a bad idea, and those who use it for bragging rights are idiots. (its pure novelty)

and my comments were not directed to you in the first place.

Why does everything have to do with you? I am starting to see a pattern.

Well heres some news that maybe you didnt know.

When I post things, I rarely think of you, (sorry but its true).

Im usually thinking of the topic at hand, not "Humm, if i say "JOKINGLY" people who brag because they skiied Mt.Washington via the cog should be smacked, will DMC be angry because potentially he has a girl and she might of skiied using it?" I dont keep a diary of your events, and keep track of them sorry again.

Seriously dude, chill, I have no probs with you, nor should you with me.

All i was saying in summary was people who brag about sking Mt.W via the COG only are idiots. The smacking thing was just a figure of speach, just like the "im gonna kill you"

Please dont take what is in this reply and twist it into somthing un-intended.

Peace !~

From all reports, it's not that interesting a ski. The snow doesn't stay in sections due to wind, and it piles up deep in others. In winter it's often wind packed and icy/crusty. I think there are much better skiing options on Washington.

I dont think you mentiond bragging about skiing mt.w via only the cog,
so you dont fit in to my "lame catagorie" for a jokingly smack.

All i was saying in simpelton terms, (have to put it simple for DUM i ment DMC)
If you brag about sking Mt.W via only the cog, your an idiot, and jokingly deserve to be smacked.

what really sux is that I know quite a few people that are tux junkies that wont join this board soully because of DMC. They have flat out told me

"man that DMC guy, what a tool"

:skierfrown:

Nothing was directed to you, get off of your F'n high horse, the world dosent revolve around DMC.

U took this too far, and if you read earlier posts I think there were a few individuals that feel the same way.

have a beer on me man you need em

Can we take votes to see who we think wins? Make this like a reality TV show, "Reality chatroom, who gets voted off this week?!"
