OK... just got the scoop on how to handle the permits for those coming and leaving on different days..... (603) 466-2721 x 116 rez desk

Those of us with tents will check in and leave info as to how many can fit in your tent and get permit for self and whomever came in with you IN PERSON.

There is no buying permits ahead for people...they insist each person/guest has to be there face to face to get a permit. This applies to the shelters as well. You can reseve multiple consecutive nights for yourself and whomever is with you when signing in.

When guests check in for permit, you have to advise how many nights and with whom(whose tent you're staying in). Then those arriving on other days need to check in and do the same.... The res. desk will check against the list for your host tent and either give you a permit or say it's full. But in anycase, they insist you check in and dish out some cash if you want a permit.

They said space would likely be available on Thursday night.. Friday gets tighter and Saturday...forget it unless you're already up there.

From the http://www.tuckerman.org/camping/camping.htm site....
Hermit Lake Shelters (Tuckerman Ravine): there are 8 lean-to style shelters and 3 tent platforms administered by the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) under a special use permit with the U.S. Forest Service. A fee of $10 per person per night is charged. If you plan to stay in a shelter or on a tent platform, visitors must purchase a ticket in advance at the AMC front desk in Pinkham Notch. The shelters are open year round and are available on a first come, first served basis. While the facilities at Hermit lake can accomodate up to 100 people, it is common for the spaces to fill early, especially on busy weekends. When the shelters are full, there are no other camping options in the area. If you arrive at Hermit Lake without a ticket and the shelters are full, you will have to go back down to Pinkham Notch and find another legal camping option. During busy times, advanced trip planning will be critical. Pets are not permitted overnight at the shelters. For more information contact AMC at (603) 466-2725.
