Hey, does anyone know where to get a small pack that I have seen people use to scale the headwall with? I remember seeing people climbing the bowl with a small pack that allows you to strap your skis onto in a parrellel manner, sort of like a quiver for arrows. I have looked around but can't seem to find one. Not real sure what I'm looking for or where to look. Any ideas?
These small packs seem like a great way to haul your skis up the final hurdle, keep your hands free, and pack some water and sunscreen in.
Sorry to be so vague, not sure how to explain it, but I'm sure some of you have one of these small pack-like contraptions.

Start with Dakine and or Life Link... Both have the type of ski attachment you speak of. (google is now your friend). once you narrow it down i'm sure others will have feedback. My pack is prolly 8 years old but still works. But those are nice.

that is always nice, if you cant find one suitable the best method is either duck taping skis to a small backpack or hiking up with one pole strap over each hand, and then one ski in each hand. It is easy to balance that way. Plus you can throw a  in your pocket to drink at the top before the final ski down.

If you're looking to buy a fairly bombproof pack that is designed for stuff like this... try the Osprey Switch 14..... OR If you want a bigger backcountry pack made for that, the Osprey Switch 40 + 5. The Osprey Switch series is designed for skiers/boarders alike with their respective needs met. They even have water bladder compartments built in + other bonuses.

I don't work for Osprey but I have been very impressed with their packs.

EMS has two that are interesting, both are a little smaller and Dakine has the Poacher. I just used the Pacher for my GOS ski trip on Saturday...great pack, it put the weight in a great place so it didn't mess up my balance at all.
Now for the EMS packs: first the new one....http://www.ems.com/products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444258 6187&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=282574488340281&fromTemplate=navigation%2Flanding.jsp&bmUID=1112569871761
and now for the Winterslide, the winterized version of the Wterslide daypack I have enjoyed for skiing inbounds and BC. As with the Osprey switch packs, the Winterslide/Waterslide bladder is contained in a seperate removable hydration-only pack with a tiny pocket.....http://www.ems.com/products/product_detail.jsp?PRODUCT%3C%3Eprd_id=84552444258 6186&FOLDER%3C%3Efolder_id=2534374302855912&fromTemplate=navigation%2Fsubcategory.jsp&bmUID=1112570408039
The winterslide is smallest...but if you pack well it will be fine for a boarder at Tucks.

thnx for the beta, some packs look good.
But was looking for something on the smaller side that I can pack into my day pack and just take out when I get to lunch rocks.
The Osprey looks cool and may work.
Will hit EMS too, wish I was close to a REI store.
Love waiting til last minute.

Don't forget BCA, (Back Country Access) they have integrated ski-pack hydration systems. I know they had them at IME in North Conway. You'll probably have much better selection there for a ski pack than REI or EMS. When I was looking a few years ago, I found nothing at the big chains, I got the comment " I think we had one in the fall" most of the time.

I have a Dakine that I got at a great price at EMS that I got/use exactly for this purpose. It's also nice having a water system while hiking up the headwall. All the modern conveniences.

Not sure if you can get the exact one any more, but I have a North Face ORYX
Which can hold a lot but really shrink down small with the straps they provide.
I use it for everying, it has a spot for a camelback bladder, which after owning it over 2 years I finally got one, and Love the pack even more.
I climbed the lip and summited the week of the 26th with my skis in the pack, it was nice not carrying them.
My buddy has a smaller camelback, which mounts skis just like mine on the side, but after 1 trip ( HE JUST GOT IT ) the skis cut holes into the sides of his pack.
BUMMER, crappy material my guess.
So he called EMS and they are giving him a new one.
I love EMS, great customer service, and return policy.

Dakine Heli Pro is a GREAT smaller pack...has the diagonal ski carry and a hydration sleeve, as well as many other bells and whistles...this is one of my favorites.....and i have 6 packs.....
Dakine Poacher is another greta one....almost twice the size. Has the back access aipper so you dont have to take off your board/skis to get in.....
Osprey Ceres 50.....even better, but even bigger......
Blah Blah Blah.....
Dakine Heli pro is the best for hiking up over headwall....Ipsoiler will vouch for how AWERSOME the pack is....I love mine!

I opted for the Osprey beause I found a great $$$ deal. Finally pack makers are making packs for our kind fun! http://www.timefortuckerman.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif
edit: I forgot to mention that the Ospry switch 40 + 5 has the rear entry as well(opens from the strap /back side of the pack). A very useful feature so you don't have to take off the shovel/board/skis/snowshoes that you may have strapped to the outside.

I love my poacher, for boarding anyway.
The back entry is a great feature.
I even took it to Europe for three weeks as my only bag.

I actually have a North Face ORYX.
Not really a big fan if it though. Don't like that it only has one zipper.
Was checking out the Osprey's though, they look cool, any idea who stocks them??

Altrec.com is where I got the discount on the Osprey.... might not be in effect now. I think backcountrystore.com has them too. As for 'local' stores in house?... couldn't tell ya.
I really like my Osprey.... the smaller Switch 14 for resort and short forays into the wild.... also is proving very good for dayhiking. The bigger Switch 40+5 is my fav for TUX.... the straps can really compress the size and also the hydration 'pack' can be taken out and worn as separate pack for yo yo -ing the slopes. There is a front emergency supplies pocket with a sleeve for a probe, crampons and other goods. Another thing is the 'panel' on the sides... they're impervious to ski edges so the don't get shredded like my previous packs have. Also there's the requisit shove-it pocket for your shovel or board. I really like the stash pockets on the hipbelt for misc goodies. http://www.timefortuckerman.com/forums/images/smilies/wink.gif

P-Hug I have to agree with Affix and PWDR8S that the Da Kine Heli Pro is a great choice. I have had mine for 3 seasons and have taken it everywhere with me and is very packable. It will allow you the diagonal option carrying your skis, along with many other variations. I pack it inside my old school Mountainsmith Bugaboo for weekend trips at Tucks and use it for day shots in the ravine all weekend. My Bugaboo is a small pack for a weekend outing but I easily manage to pack it inside with all my other essentials for living at the shelters for a few days. It has a universal bladder sleeve and is very comfortable and secure. The price is right and it is highly recommended.

sounds like you are looking for something small, in the 750-1500cu" range. in that case, BCA, EMS, life-link and osprey all make quick ascent packs in that size range. i'd stay away from the camelbak ski carry packs...they seem a little light duty.
this might be bigger than what you're looking for, but:
