A few years ago hiking up Left Gully, I met Al Risch, one of the founders of Friends of Tuckerman and a veteran of 597 days up in Tucks. He pointed out a grandson (or was it great grandson?) of the legendary Brooks Dodge (father of extreme skiing who pioneered most of the extreme routes at Tucks back in the 40's) who had just the week before made his first descent over the lip at age 6. Who know if this is the record but it's hard to imagine anyone younger being up to the task!

Well my son isn't the youngest but at 11 years old he helped me carry on a tradition I started with my father. My first trip up tucks with my Dad was in May of 1966. We then went up tucks every year after that until 1970. Since then I've tried to go up at least once per year. Last year my son made his first climb into tucks. The reason we wait until he was eleven is because he needed to be able to carry all his eq, snowboarding and camping gear in on his own (that was my Dad's rule). Last yr he carried almost 40lbs of gear and took us close to 5 hrs to get to Hojos. Once there I thought he would want to just hang around get to bed early and then head out first thing in the am. But he was so excited to be there we headed up to the bowl about 3:00pm. Took one run in the bowl then headed down for dinner. The next day was the perfect blue sky, warm weather day we all crave at Tuckermans. A great trip and with any luck we'll have another great trip this weekend. We're heading up Firday!
