Does anyone know if there is a stream near the Gulf of Slides that we could easly get at? I am trying to figure out how much fuel to bring, boiling water uses much less gas then melting snow.

Everthing up there was still VERY frozen on Sunday. Might change after the rain but I didn't see any running water.

There is a very frozen stream crossing (ditch) a short ways below the base of the ravine. I wouldn't count on finding water there, even if you chipped at the ice with an axe.
How long are you going up for? For a day trip, surely hauling water beats melting.

There is a stream that runs down near the avy path of the snowfields. All the times i have camped there, we were able to dig to get to the water, but those times were always later in spring. Where are you planning on camping in GOS? I know a few good spots.
I know I've pumped from a water source just inside the woods at GOS... We heard the water and just dug for it...

I'd go with the melting option- yellow snow is much easier to spot than yellow water, and if everyone else is like me, stoked by coffee on the uptrack, they feel the need to relieve themselves before starting a tricky descent! (maybe that's how the headwall gets so icy...)

Oh.....is it ridiculous to go over to OAKES Gulf form GOS? That was an idea.....
Also, where are the good spots to camp up there? Anything we should watch out for?
Pretty sure Oaks is on the other side of the ridge... So it's totally doable..

As for camping, When you get up to the base of gully # 1, there is some forest to your left, go in there most of the way until you hit the edge of the snowfield avy run out. I have camped a few times right on the edge of that forest/avy run out. There is a stream near the avy run out that you could possibly dig to get water. Obvisouly, i would not recommend pitching a tent in the nice wide open avy run out. ;)

What exactly is your game plan? Have tentative plans to hit Oakes/Monroe on Sunday.
Yeah, if you are already that close, might as well head right over. You'll prolly have to skirt the top of OG for a while on your way over to the usual lines near Monroe....I'd guess well over half an hour from the top of GOS to the goods in Oakes....it's a bit of a walk.
I'm good for Sunday!

G, I wish... As it turns out my schedule will be changing, but not for another week, or week and a half... Than I'll be Monday through Friday for a month or so, so then weekends I'll be all free. PERFECTLY in time for spring skiing season. THWEET! Let me know if something's brewing in another week or so. I am up for Sunday though, tentatively Monroe Brook, Oakes Gulf...

Goodman describes the access/riding routes in his NH/Maine BC book. The chutes that he mentions are on the west/northwest edge of Oakes however, so Hillman's access might be faster - I'm reciting from my memory of this chapter however.

No headlamps, moonlight will be enough! Once your eye's adjust it amazing how little light is needed, its not like there will be serious route finding issues. Do try to keep up with me, it will be far too tempting to pull ahead and duck down to scare the piss out of you!

That's wicked nasty. Deliciously wicked and nasty.
I hiked down tux trail once at 3am-ish alone. Something was in the woods, something big. Scared the living piss outta me.
