Hey All,

I'm planning to head up to Tucks with a couple of friends on the weekend of March 18th-20th. We're planning to stay in the lean-to at Hermit Lake, but I've never stayed there before, so I have some questions.

Is it likely that the lean-to will fill up on this weekend? Should we bring tents in case?

When/where can we reserve the lean-to for the weekend? I'm assuming it's first come/first served (no calling ahead). If we get there late thursday night, will we have to wait until friday morning to reserve it?

Any nearby water sources? Or will we be melting snow?

Outhouse? Dig a Hole? Or pack it out? What's considered ethical up there?

Thanks for the help. If anyone else is heading up there, look for the guy with the yellow jacket and x-screams with tele bindings. That's me! :skicool:

the shelters are first come first serve - but you register at the base so you'll know if you have a spot of not... You can only get a shelter if Pnkham Notch os open...
Water can be found in the stream by Hojos... As well as winter bathrooms...

Enjoy!

I think this page answers your questions:

As for late thursday night - the Pinkham Notch desk is open until 11pm. The basement (bath rooms, packign room) is open 24hrs. If you get there past 11pm you won't be able to reserve a spot, and won't know for sure if there's room - so you can hike up and hope theres a spot. You can then register in the morning at the HoJo caretakers - but they don't like to do this.

HoJo's has outhouses. Coldest Toilets on the planet. (I am shivering just thinking about it)

Water: They dug a well, but I dunno if it's operating yet. So you've got a stream that you should run through a filter before drinking it.
