If my current contract isn't extended...

It would be great to meet up with you guys as I've been reading your posts for a couple years.
Compared to you I definately a newby but Tucks is my favorate place on earth.
I'd like to go earlier, but I figure the snow can be skethcy. I went last year on December 10th and it was a great trip.
I'll be in touch as time draws closer.
Thanks for responding.

Maybe. I pass about 20 ski areas on my way there.
It's like being an alcoholic. You may plan to go to AA, but if you pass too many bars on the way it's just too tempting.

I've been think about BC or tele gear for years (took a tele lesson at Sunshine way back - I'm sold). Maybe this is the excuse I need to buy some this year!

I've given up on regular alpine bindings these days. My mainstay ski rig has Fritschi Freeride AT bindings, which are just fine for all things in-bounds and with the flick of a ski pole you've got touring convenience, all in the same set-up!

OK the trip has been entered into our new calendar. Who's going to me for some bone chilling Tuckerman Exploration?
Last I recall I think M@,DMC, NHSKI, Pepperdaug, and Boarder 25 were in. Did I miss anybody?

It's in my palm. I've got 4 vaca days to blow on skiing this year, so that one should be as good as any.
Who knows, maybe my heels will not be attached. These AT ideas intregue me, and I wish to subscibe to their newsletter

M@ -
We should pick a mid week day to do CANNON and or Killington.
I've got two or three days to blow on skiing before the end of the year.
Friday Dec 12th i'll probably be heading up at night.
Dec 8th is full moon. So hiking on friday night would work. Moon comes up around 8:30, should be giving the trail some light around midnight... will be directly overhead at 4am.
Hike up Thursday and you've got trail light around 10pm.

I'll look forward to a little moon light. Last Dec we had a light cloud cover, just enough to hike without our lamps.

That time of year - I'd rather do day hikes... I'm not sure I really want to stay in the shelters.. Rather stay at JDL or an inn...
Hike up in the AM with a light load...
Sundays are good for me..the 7th is the day before the full moon...if the snow pack is solid a run up "the Moose" would be cool. Moosilauke, that is. It's a shame to miss out on any excuse to get a few turns, any where.

Hike up in the AM with a light load... I'm with DMC, I'd rather do a day trip. I am definitely in for the post birthday tucks trip... Should I get my AT setup before then, or bring my shoes? Also, prolly need to rent some Avy gear? Are we getting a guide for a little instruction at that time or what?

KFAR: Let me know if and when Fri 12 Dec becomes definite. I am like the king of Fri night at the AMC. Especially since I got a wagon. In other word, count me in. Question: Without actually disclosing the address, what part of Brentwood do you live in? Just curious 'cuz I work in Exeter. Have fun, be safe. Al :skistooge:

Get a shovel and probe... We can practice some... Show you flux lines... Dig some pits - look at some snow crystals and wot-not...
But - lets see if theres enough snow first :)

Skistoogie -
December 12th is definate for me and probably a few others. I may go to shelter on Friday night, others may do JDL.
I live off of Haigue Rd across from the Community Church on 111A. Now where that is?
Where do you work in Exeter?

KFAR: I manage a distribution warehouse (wine and high octane booze) in the industrial park by the Skating Rink (in behind Kay's Subs, etc). In other words, I'm the only one that works nights so I can assume the title of manager. lol Since I'm still in college full-time nights, it works pretty well for now. At least until I find something else days that fits my schedule.Getting a little burnt-out on seeing the sunrise every morning. I usually just camp out in the wagon at Pinkham and trailhead early (4AM-ish) as I tend to be a pathetically slow hiker (Guess I just like to get into what is around me too much! I can do 20+ miles a day but people have a tendency to blow by me a lot). Ought to get together sometime for a coffee or something. OK, off to sleep now for me, the sun is just starting to come up. Looks like a pretty sunrise today. May take a walk to the edge of the lake (5 minute walk) and watch it first. Talk to you later. Al :skistooge:
That's a bit early for me, but the pace sounds just right!
All Power to the Tortise!
I'm a tortise too... (insert tortise graemlin here)
I always take my time to the shelters... Save energy for a nice afternoon on Hillmans...
the trick is to have someone fast in your crew - to get up there quick and save shelter space...
:chicken: -"yo..."

Glad I'm not the only tortoise out there. At the right pace you just keep going and going and going.

How long does it take everyone here to get to the base of Tucks from the parking lot, or to Hojos', WITH equipment? I found it very difficult to go at a quick pace with alot of weight on my back. People without equipment were flying by us!!

Its always taken me 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 of an hour. I'm usually hiking last in our party. Some in our group make in 2 hours.
I'm at around 2 -2.5 hours...
Our best in the group is around 1.5 hours..
I go slow... I tend to like to stay at the end of the group anyway. It's guide thing.. Make sure everyones OK..
But I like to lead climbs...
Last year I went solo, and I was 2:34 from car to bowl. I took a nice break at Hojo tho. Most years I hike to Hojo at night and sleep, and on those trips (with the camping stuff) I'm a total tortise. Last year (65#pack) was my worst at 2:45 (just from Pinkham to Hojo). I was major outta shape and a big fatty. I've dropped 30pnds since then tho. So this year maybe I'll be a Hare.

I generally end up between 1:45 and 2:15 to Ho-JO's......With Day grear only - pack weight approx -40 lbs.....not sure what adding extra gear would do....or snowshoes on a winter hike....
Add 25-30 pounds onto that...
It uskcs... But it's only a couple of hours...

Congrats on 900....I'm around 2 hours or so. This spring was brutal I think it was 2 1/2 too much gear.

Best time was long, long ago. I'm older and somewhat hobbled by injuries and arthritis :unhappyhiker: so my current best is 2:40 to the bowl-
let's see, the weight carried???
hummmm, 37 lbs on the way out...minus 1.8 litres H2O, a few energy bars, and four bottles of lunch...can't do the math....it must be time for lunch ;)

and four bottles of lunch...4 bottles of lunch?? Was that beer? Or do you have one of those GU dispenser bottles...?
The whole time issue is why I like the night-before hike up. You have no reason to rush. You're gonna be 2hrs ahead of everyone the next day no matter what, so take another break.
This years day trip I stopped at HoJo and looked at Hillman's and thought about just doing that. But it only took a short break to get me into the "Over the Top!" mode.

I gotta drive 6 hours so... Thats a lot of wasted time.. We drive up and crash at a motel or sleep in the lot.. Then eat breakfast at JDL, pay for the shelter then hike..
I don't think I could hike after driving 6 hours...

I'm a 2 hr drive away from Pinkham. I leave after work on thursday, take friday off. Hike up thursday night, usually hit the leanto's sometime close to midnight thursday. Most years there's an empty one at that point. It is nice.
Of course, I don't have a DMB concert in my back yard. Back to work DMC.

Yeah hiking up after a 6 hour drive sucks. Especially if you get searched at the border and have to repack everything in the parking lot. There has been many a trip where We've left after the club closes down, drive all night, hike and ski and crash at a camp site somewhere. It usually hurts, but a few beers the following morning and your good to go.

I can't guarentee that I can make it, but at this point, I'd definitely like to try to go. I'd probably be good for either Friday evening or an early morning hike up (I'm about 2 hrs south of Tucks; 1-1.5 in the early morning ;) ).
During the summer with no pack I've made it DOWN from the top of the ravine to Pinkham in just under 45 minutes. As for times up, my best is probably about 1 hr 15 minutes or so, usually more like around 1.5-2 hrs.
I'll know better once we get closer to the date, but I'd definitely be interested!
