Fess up Frank: Do you tracks lead back UP that cliff, or DOWN?

I love the "glove drop evidence" you see some times. Foot tracks coming in to right under the lift to a spot, sometimes with pole dropped mark clear in the snow, and then the tracks leading away again. Sometimes they are WICKED long tracks and you feel the pain that guy went through.

Looks like he is balancing himself... could be snowboarding. Hands are out like he would have poles in them though.

Actually he could be about to slide backwards and fall over the cliff (he did mention in another post running into trees etc :p )

He also does look like he might be pushing... we're just not sure what

I'm sure Frank will 'clear the air' when he gets on.

Geeeeezzzzz, I leave for the morning and back, I find a thread with my nickname as topic and with 26 messages...

I think the answer will be long...

I was NOT in snowboard, when this pic was taken. In fact, this is a sequency of pics on the top of Pirouette at la Réserve and the photograph had never taken pics with my camera, so most of the pics are bad. This one was not so bad, but it was just after dropping the cliff on right. (right to left) and after, the normal line is to continue to the left side of the trail and it goes up a little bit. You're not the first person to think I was in snowboard on that pic. Almost everybody think that. I have some pics where people think I'm doing telemark, other snowboards, other monoski...

Bannick

Frankontour
08-21-2003, 02:38 PM
M@, no need to lose glove from the chairlift in that trail... it's an OFFICIAL TRAIL and was OPEN during that day.

By the way, I had my ski poles with me. I was just really far from the camera and this just a little part of a 1800/1200 pic. It's why you don't see the poles.

And for :outhouse: or :nakedguy: forget that for me, especially under a chairlift, as it was in operation that day (rare thing).

I really don't accept to see the snowboard on my pic... what a shame for me !

Unfortunately, I don't have a pic really showing that I'm on a little floor before dropping in the second pitch. It's the only way to take that trail. You jump off the first cliff, you stop while going up, when Sam took my pic and you drop off the tiny pass and after, you have the choice to continue the supersteep part of going in the gladed right side. It is what I call a real trail.

Frankontour
08-21-2003, 02:50 PM
Very easy, DMC.

I was a skier
I am a skier
I will be a skier
and I will die as a skier (probably in skiing)

don't even think to put me on a board... that's the same reason that why many of you would never put their feet on some skis.

So I prefer not to be associated with snowboard ;)

I don't have a problem if you prefer the snowboard. I will never understand you, but I don't have problem with that :D

DMC
08-21-2003, 02:57 PM

Man - I wish I could rerate you now...

I had high hopes for you...

Oh well...

Frankontour
08-21-2003, 03:02 PM
BTW Dave, don't blame my camera. It's a very correct one, but when the photograph is at 300' of the skier, it's not easy to have a clear pic without optical zoom :(

DMC : A chance that you can't rerate me as I'm already near the basement.

A question for you... why don't you ski ? and why do you seem to have something against the skiers ?

skicdave
08-21-2003, 03:08 PM

Jolly J
08-21-2003, 03:09 PM
Frank, Maybe I missed it but I don't think DMC has a problem with skiing.

I only ride on a toboggan because crazy carpets suck. It's all about sliding down hill. Skis, Snowboards, Tele, and yes even blades. Most people should broaden their horizon and try different aspects of this great sport...

For the rest, please don't think I want to restart the war Snowboard/skiing. I have nothing against the snowboard in general and I try to respect the snowboarders. hmm, not really (http://cf.f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/frankontour502/vwp?.dir=/Mes+photos&.dnm=T4T+-+Frankontour+Monoskiing2.jpg&.view=t)

"Telemarking" honestly, it weirdly look more like telemark on the complete pic.

Not really neither... but cool in june (http://cf.f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/frankontour502/vwp?.dir=/Mes+photos&.dnm=T4T+-+Frankontour+Telemarking.jpg&.view=t)

Pirouette complete... as you can see, my original personnal pic was just a tiny part of the pic.

Complete pic of the very 1st pitch of miss Pirouette (http://cf.f1.pg.photos.yahoo.com/ph/frankontour502/vwp?.dir=/Mes+photos&.dnm=T4T+-+Pirouette+complete.jpg&.view=t)

And finally, what's the problem with my pics ? Yes, I always ski in the rocks... don't wonder why I just use old skis.

Anyway, If I was skiing in the groomed trails, I would have moved to snowboard for a while.

I'm not sure if your understanding of english is quite good enough. I really don't quite get how one might think DMC has anything against skiers ... For the snow, don't you worry, I don't only ski in the rocks... and I honestly didn't hit a single rock on the runs where both pics I had on my profile were taken. I can even say that on the actual one, I didn't passed near a single branch. there is an invisible gully where we can pass. It's quite easy and featured great powder, without rocks and grass.

And for DMC... I may be wrong... don't know. I guess it's just a remark he already did that remained in my mind (1st impression or so). If you all say that he's "for" skiing, I imagine you're right and I'm sorry. Only question I wonder is why DMC started to laugh at me cause I was looking like in snowboard my profile's pic, while I don't think I'd ever said my opinion about snowboarding in this board...

And for my english, you're right, may be the misunderstanding comes from the language. For the words & sentences, no problem, especially with the dictionary, if I'm not sure of a meaning, but the english expressions is really what kills me on the boards, although I learn hundreds of them in the last year.

Frankontour
08-21-2003, 08:31 PM
Sorry DMC, I talked too fast.
For the Chute, we'll see that... it won't be my 1st run in the ravine ;)

I forgot to answer 1 thing on the msgs of the 1st page of this thread :

Mumster : don't you worry, I don't need too much courses about skiing (I would more need an "english expressions course 101")... The funny thing about this place is that all the skiers look like snowboarders, there, and the snowboarders look like skiers or look to ride the trail going backwards.

You may see a little more what I mean on this pic, taken later in the season. The cliff at top is 25' high wihtout snow, so it's just too high to jump off in winter, landing on a flat. The upper treeside is probably the worst place to pass of all the trail. The easiest way is just on the right of the top cliff, the drop is just 6-7 feet high, but you're directed on the left side of the trail and it's going up a little bit. I should fire my friend for this pic and the ones he missed ;)

http://www.firsttracksonline.com/discus/messages/2508/1996.jpg

That's a real good tactical trail. Steep as hell, but not very high as there is a long ±flat before the 2nd pitch which is quite more rocky than the 1st. The 1st pitch is also strategically well covered (was still skiable in late april this year) and always funny. What a nice trail !

skicdave

Frankontour

Yes, I'm used to negociate with thin spaces between big rocks, but the rocky pics are just 1 or 2% of my pics. The thing is that it's the 1-2% where I'm in the pics.....

This is the kind of ski pics that I like to take

Skiers are great...great for towing me through the flats :D True Bannick... I asked my son 2 days ago which he wanted to do this year... ski or ride (since he needs new equipment and he's not getting both). He slyly mumbled 'skiing', mainly for that reason. In the past he skied then switch to riding. We would take him locally to a small hill and he spends more time hopping and waddling about since its flat in parts. I've been the one to towing him around all the time so sounds like my arms will get a break this year! Yahoo! He'll probably still want to go to the snowboard camp at Tremblant for March break however which is fine. :sun:

Vacation....Must be nice. I'm on a 6 month contract....no vacation. Grrr...Gotta make the best of evening, weekends and Long weekends. Last night I went up to the local ski hill to fetch some first aid gear (time for recruiting for the upcoming patrol season) Some kids had built a downhill course so Smiley and I brought our Bikes. I'm riding on my sons Mountain Bike which pretty much sucks, but I can't afford anything better right now. I dropped in on off a maintenance road and everything went to hell pretty quick. Smiley said my back wheel was off the ground the minute I dropped in. I hit a root which pitched the back tire off the ground even farther and so I let off on the breaks hit an stump and did a fairly violent endo...I banged my self up pretty good. Once a shook the cobwebs out we continued down the mountain via a regular trail. The crappy thing about our mountain is the patrol hut is at the top. So we then got to bike back up to the top. I'm a bit sore today but have no regrets...It's all an adventure. Can't wait to head out again this weekend....will probably stay away from DH, and stick to XC until I get a bike with decent suspension.

suspension???? that is why you have knees and elbows. I still ride a rigid bike...but then I don't really have too much need for 3" of travel riding in the city.

Camp Fortune or edelvise? Camp Fortune. Used to have a season pass there for a few years when my son was in the Nancy Greene League.

I spent alot of time riding in the gatineau especially at night. That flat between the two bases can be such a pain. Do they still have that ski jump there? I used to go to Mt. Ste. Marie alot too. You could ride midweek and get change back from a 20 for a lift ticket. We used to ride the rock cuts along the highways too.

The ski jumps at Fortune deteriated years ago... but there was a revival (or at least an attempt) to reserect (spello) ski jumping there during the 2000-2001 season and last year I think. They haven't rebuild the old jumps, but perhaps that will be in the works.

You can see half of the two jumps at photo left (shot taken during winter 2000)...

btw, Butterflies. It is hard enough on my image having it pink, but flowers would really be a problem Oh, I dunno, SkiLas. It ALMOST matches those bright red boots of yours. I think you should keep the chair and just change your image to match ;)

PS:
90 posts on this one topic is *insane*! Plus all the other traffic on this site . . . how do you expect a girl to get any work done? It now takes me over 1/2 hour at work every morning just to keep up, so just stop it. all of you. right now!

so dave. when I used to frequint fortune there was an area to across from the slopes with the tower on it. I believe it was the other side of the parking lot at the main base. There were trails cut but no lifts. We hiked it a few times with fresh. Is that where this pic was taken from? I had a lot of good times at fortune.

Photo was taken from the Alexander / MacDonald slopes served by a T-Bar. Its was reopened several years ago and serves partly for the freestyle bunch. Short but decent runs, nice and sunny. The old Meech area which had a T-Bar was closed for years (its between the valley area and Sky Line). It was reopened about 2 years ago with a VERY slow quad.

Camp Fortune has done well in recent years since the Sutterman brothers took over. Gets REAL busy in prime season. There was something like 200-300 kids alone in the Nancy Greene program in the 2000/2001 season.

[You should be working for the Gov :jollyj: . Here in Ottawa public servants have been off all week on 'forced holidays' due to power conservation! [/QB]I work for the Provincial Government but the government is in a "hiring freeze" to conserve money. They won't offically hire anyone. They just give out casual contracts for 6 months. Lay you off. Let you sweat for a few days then give you another 6 months. They can do this for a total of 2 years and then they may give your position to someone else or put you on a Personal Service Contract and start the whole thing all over again. It's unreal. This way...no union, no benefits, no vacations, no flex time, no parking spots, no sense of security. But for what I'm doing here I'm paid quite well. My contract expires in mid November....just in time for snow! So we'll see what happens. I've got a couple of job leads on the back burner. So we'll see where they go. Or I may just go back to work for myself.

I agree with the suspension thing....but if you saw this course it was pretty intense. I could barely hang onto the handle bars (when I wasn't flying over them)

Is it time to go home yet....

45 minutes to go for me....ahhhh summer hours. I am trying like hell to get the firm to go to winter hours. but then again I can come and go as I please and managed to get out for several opening days and cheap ticket specials last year so I guess it ain't too bad.

Ya I tend to go over the bars standing up to pedal on a flat road.

I tend to go over "To" the bars as soon as I get out of here. mmmmm Beer and Wings.... Mmmmm I'm here till 4:30 dammit.

Nice pic of Camp Fortune, Dave !

Weirdly, if they did a lot of marketing with their new quad on the Meech side, in 2000-01, they never said it was slow ;) . This is a really weird ski area, when you think there is something like 5 different sides, but no one of them have more than ±60% of the vertical of the ski area. It was really fascinating, in the past, as it had 14 trails... and 12 lifts, back in the early 70s. Still today, they have 7 lifts including 4 quads.

But now, it will be 60-90h of working (university) by week, until october 2004. (Term this fall, ""professionnal training"" winter/spring. Term in may-july. Study all summer long, Corporation professional tests on early october 2004.....geeeeezzzz how will I survive ?

Good question, for the skiing. I must say last year, I hoped to have the time to ski 20 times (with just a university term). I finally did 37 ski days ;) But only 3 little days in february against 9 times after may 1. (2 lift serviced... 7 not). Would have been twice that, if I didn't have a summer term and I would have skied Tucks for SURE.

The tough thing is to believe that I won't be able to attend to the Swampfest this january ...... At least, I want to be at the FTO day, after the very good one, last year at Burke at 50% off. I forget about skiing in january and february, except may be few little days. It will be more march/april/may where I will have a little bit more time to ski, I think !

Corporation Professional Tests? This must be something new. Since when must one be professional to work for a corporation? Is this a post Enron thingy? Just kidding, good luck on the completion of your studies.

Oh, and the corporation that I work for considers the drug test to be their professional test. Since we do some work with DOD, a simple fill the cup is not sufficient, they take hair samples instead. LOL

Since I'm working nights this year, I'm figuring I should get to ski at least 50 days this year. One of the guys that I work with skied 107 days last year.

Wow Surfy... I would like to work where you do ;)

I talked of the corporation of the chartered accountants of Canada, and the final test to enter in the corporation. Now, it's just 3 tests (2 of 4h and one of 5h), but we must write about 80 pages of text for each test and we must prepare us all summer long, cause if you sink it, you have to wait a whole year to redo it and the chances to pass on the 2nd try are really less good.

Well... on this one, I hope that I less seem to be in snowboard !! (for those who don't understand, look at the beginning of this huge conversation)

(amazing conditions today... with 2 feet of light powder in that one and I was doing the first tracks on that gem... just too nice !)

I hope to have a video of my 2nd run into it by tomorrow. Pretty exciting !
