Any of you guys enjoy mogul skiing. Every year me and a couple friends go around to the amatuer competitions in the East, there are about 20 every year...its cool cuz you get to see different smaller areas you otherwise would never get to. any interest?

I love em, every time I go skiing thats the first thing I look for.
I hate to say it but all the Hype Outer Limits at Killington has. I really dont like what they do with it. The trail has great Potential yet every year I go up at least 2 times and every year Im always dissapointed.
Either its completely groomed, or the middle is flat. There are never any good lines either.
Id say the best time I had skiing the bumps would of been at Okiemo, or Superstar in May.
Any way I love the bumps.. whats a great place to go?
Thanks

hehe now we're talking. Trent, OL at killington isnt as great for bumps as youd think. with the masses rolling down the lines can be ****ty, late march or april around the bump contest is when youd find the best conditions. I'm sure there are better these are just ones of my preference.
My top 10:
10) PRIMA-PRONTO-LOG CHUTE (Vail)
9) CROSSOVER (Huntah)
8) SEL"S CHOICE (OKEMO)
7) OL
6) EXHIBITION (A-Basin)
5) CHUTE (MRG)
4) MIDDLE EARTH (Sugarbush)
3) RIPCORD (Mt Snow)
2) OUTHOUSE (Mary Jane)
1) SUPERSTAR (Killington)

I wish I could have the enthousiasm(sp) for bump skiing you all have. When your good you look amazing, when you suck you look like a fool.
I tend to avoid them but I am intrigued by them. I want to be good some day.
I did make it down little headwall my first on spring trip. It was pretty bumped up. But as it was my first time skiing with a pack, my first time on bumps, and my first time on AT gear I am sure I looked like a fool, but I made it down without breaking my legs. I was overjoyed.

Anywhere in Utah. Park City has mouthwatering mogul runs, as do Snowbird and Alta. You can't beat that Utah snow for perfect mogul runs. :lips:
I haven't done too many in the east - Superstar in the spring is fun. I want to try Outer Limits this winter. I'm open to other east coast suggestions - :D none in the Poconos - except one run at Montage Mountain they sometimes leave open ?white lightening.

DA CLAP hahahahaha
Mumster if youre from Philly here is da scoop for you.
Whitetail mountain. They have a separate "black area" on hikers right. I was there for a competition in march last year for my first visit and I have to say quite impressed (for PA) All 4 runs in this area have a sustained pitch of upper intermediate as a universal scale (this means its black/double black on the maps) for about 800 vertical feet - quite entertaining... any mountain that has a mogul comp if you are around small places like in the poconos should have a decent run ski-year round

3 : Superspeed - Alta (QC)
4 : Chute - MRG
5 : Principale - Alta (QC)

I'm far from competent in the bumps, but I'd add to the list Paradise and Fall Line at MRG, and even Paradise at S'Bush (just to throw out something that's not in Castlerock). Double fall-lines and other hazards (rocks, ice, and trees) make things more interesting.... UN at Jay is also pretty cool; not so steep, but those suckers get HUGE.
All time favorite classic bump run in my book has got to be Chinclip (Stowe), though. Just so many positive experiences on that trail, and it's wicked scenic (although not as scenic as Middle Earth, which is freakin' gorgeous)!
targheehucker
09-11-2003, 11:36 PM
i think chin clip and middle earth are very similar trails, both in conditions and aspect
paradise is schweeet, but dont htink it qualifies for moguls...
ill put another list tomorrow for technical trails maybe, paradise would def be top 10 in that...

"options" that lead to the goods below the waterfall....
Looking forward to your list. After this summer, I think all 10 trails on my personal top-ten list of righteous in-boundary technical lines would be at Las Lenas. Top ten that are both in-bounds and on a trail map? Hmmm....

yeah, its seems a single mtn could have multiple trails that make the list (ie MRG) itll be cool to do one per mountain...

I really like the bumps but am far from competant in them (except on blades). So I prefer a 1/2 bump 1/2 flat trail like Superstar, or a short wide trail like Zoomer or Avalanche at Cannon to give me lots of options.

Like BG, I'm still too low on the learning curve to compete, but maybe this year for the fun of it. BG, come up to MRG, you will almost have to ski bumps to see the best terrain :skierpetrified:

I'd beg to differ. When I have competed in the mogul challenge in was always under the single chair at the top... ???

I've never committed to a single mountain before, as I always like the freedom to ski around. decide friday night where to go for the weekend/which mountain has the most enticing offerings. Maybe I'll just have to skip work one weekday to go up to MRG...

My Bumps Days are over...I'm now in my Bumpy Daze.
I was never a pretty bumper...merely cute.
Back in '68, when I had knees and the bumps were somewhat larger that they are these days I enjoyed flat-topping on National. It seems that National got tamed and now I'm getting kinda gimpy
The Bumps in Left get pretty nice, more my speed these days.

DMC, I looked into ski patrol qualifications, and now have even more appreciation for the ski patrollers. Maybe in a few years. I'd love to take next winter off and teach in Utah, and maybe take a ski partol course and qualify for the following year.

Patrolling rocks. There's nothing like untracked lift serviced pow in the morning. Mind you standing next to a race course in -20 weather sucks too. I guess you have to take the good with the bad.

I have a friend who was a Ranger at Camelback - Where Mum skis....
They act as a kinda Ski Patroller that doesnt work on hurt people... They just kinda maintain order - identify "possibles" - direct traffic away from accidents..
I stopped skiing Camelback after I had a couple tickets taken for skiing fast on an expert trail by Rangers...
Hunter Mountain(Where I ride) has Rangers as well..

At Tremblant they have LOTS of rangers. They aren't on the slopes however. They patrol the resort village with fancy radios and earphones, looking for people who have empty wallets, or those trying to sell their SkiMax tickets. Next I expect we will get a ticket for taking a photo without paying some sort of fee...

I'd like to think that I'm not a cop, unless I see something really stupid.
One night last year a saw a snowboarder laying in the landing zone of a popular air bump (Where you hit high speed and the ground drops out below you) So I went over to her and told her and asked if she was ok. She said she was fine and that she was just waiting for her friend. I told her that there are a bunch of people rocking that air bump all night and she should move. She stood up as if to go, so I went down the trail a bit farther to meet up with a buddy. When I stopped I turned around and she was laying down. Just then some guy pops over the bump and total stomps his as I later found out girlfriend. Their boards got tangled and they starfished together down the rest of the pitch. For a few seconds there was no movement. Finally he sits up and then she does and they ride down to us. They didn't understand what they did was stupid and they didn't think it would hurt if he came up short. I guess sometimes the gene pool needs to be cleaned.
I'm more a first aider, I rarely clip tickets unless your an @sshole about the whole thing. Treat me with respect and you'll get the same. However some patrollers take a power trip with their job.

Targee - never heard of it. But, I'll look it up. No I am not. It is outside of the blackcomb boundry accessible via hiking from the blackcomb glacier or up out of lakeside bowl. If you have been to blackcomb it is the ridge to your far right as you go up the 7th heaven express.
It was named by the locals...I am not sure which line is which but I do know that getting an STD (snowboarding/skiing transmitted desease) has never felt so good.

I'm more about the skiing, so I'd rather ski than deal the crap. Then again I'm the patrol leader so sometimes I still get dragged into it. I patrol at Crabbe Mountain. It's a pimple compared to most mountains in NE, but it's got a little bit of everything.
When they rescend the no beard rule at Hunter Mountain - I will join Ski Patrol...
The main reason is - I want the skills for Back Country... And they always get first tracks...
HOWEVER - Playing music in a ski bar band keeps me up until 3AM.... Getting up at 6AM - would be tough...
:chicken:
I've never had a ticket clipped, but should have plenty of times. Speed/Rope Ducking/Off Site...
Here's a pic at Sunapea, we just hit this tree shoot and popped out about 100 yards before this other guy who ended up getting busted.
From the left;
