Off topic for T4T.. but hey... whos going to stop me?

My wife and I have decided to take our PJ Snoozer camping :teardrop: in the Adirondacks maybe Wed or Thurs for a few days. Were looking for a fine state park (ie non private/no gettos please). Prefer to stay around Lake Placid/Saranac Lake area. Might :hikingboots: , might canoe, will certainly drinks some   .

Unlike :mumster: I'll probably keep things simple, keep a stable elevation and look for snow in our cooler ice bag (hey I know its there and within reach!)

So far my research points to Rollins Pond Campground or Fish Creek Pond near Saranac Lake.

Anybody been there, know something, have discount coupons, offer other suggestions etc?

We'll go cheap so we can dine in style at the Lake Placid Lodge :pinkham: :D

Thanks

Thanks I don't have anything particularly helpful to offer here, except a memory of being in that area 15 years ago when I worked for NYS Assembly Committee on Environmental Conservation. Canoed in Saranac lake, visited the lock (loch?) keeper, ate at the Lake Placid Lodge, visited a fish hatchery and an ADK interpretive center. It was stunningly beautiful and I've wanted to go back ever since. Have a great time!

That's funny, I am going to the Adirondaks later in July for some :hikingboots: , rock climbing, & touring Lake Placid. If you want some ideas where to go, check out www.willardhouse.com. (http://www.willardhouse.com.) That's where we are going to be staying, but there are some links on that page to local attractions (such as Whiteface Mtn & High Falls Gorge). If you research them you might find discounts or packages to things of interest. Have a great time!

Yo Dave:
I used to goto a 4th of July party every year at Tupper Lake. There's a camp site that is only accessable by canoe (or oher water craft). It's a lean-to with a great view of the lake and sunset. If you want the co-ords, or (sigh) DIRECTIONS, let me know. If you show up on a friday past 5 it's gonna be like Hermit Lake, and you'll be sharing the leanto, but hey, it's the only stash I know of in the Adarondaks.

We always took the place over, with like 20 ppl in tents around the leanto which was the supply (i.e. Food+Keg) stash.

There's an out house, but other than that, it's no ammenities.

This probably isn't the best option for the tear-drop.

Yupper :ma: . That might be a tad difficult with the teardrop. Sounds like the Tupper Lake area is where we are headed however.

Hey Bladegirl. Yes we hope to canoe on Saranac Lake.. perhaps take a peak at the illusive "The Point" resort hidden up in Upper Saranac Lake if we can find it. We've eaten at Lake Placid Lodge before... fantastic (but pricey!) Staying there might be an option someday... think its about $350 US a night for the cheapest room... yikes!

We must like the area I suppose... thats why our license plate reads 'Camp ADK' (also our initials).

We'll be scouting out camping and such for future trips to the area. We can't get enough of NY/VT/NH.. and sometime ME. :p

What is the lock keeper Blade Girl?

What is the lock keeper Blade Girl? Dave,

We took the boat through a lock into Lower Saranac Lake, which was a cool experience. There was a full time Lock Keeper who had a little house right there at the lock, and he'd come out and operate the lock for anyone who was coming through. Got to meet him and see the house. I don't know who does it now or if they have automated it.

Didn't realize there were any locks in that region. I'm sure we can portage that with our canoe :)

Much better to stay somewhere minimal, so you can keep the big bucks for things that are really fun. :skicool: :hottub: :upski: :heliski: :saxaphone: and, of course, :chair:

True mumster... but we do like to splurge occasionally.

Here we are on a nice weekend stay at the Irwin Inn (Ontario) in late January. Gosh! we even had our own private pool!

I saving the 'roughing it' for our summers of camping.
