I was chatting with a guy on Telemarktips about making a run up to the top of Uncanoonuc, just outside Manchester, NH. He's not able to make it tomorrow and I can only imagine that there is some great snow. Is there anybody who knows the area who could meet me tomorrow morning before work. I could be there as early as need be.

Yo Kfar: How long would this take? I'm up for some early morning tracks. I have no skins, so I'd be post holling.

I have NO beta on place. I was there this fall though on a hike:

I have heard it is around 2.5 hours. I am hoping Django pics up this thread because he mentioned at KC's he knows the area.

As I heard someone say recently, bring your sister-in-law's rock skis... unless the Guido had a base before this storm (dubious), I don't imagine that you'll get enough float to keep above the sharp teeth of lurking rocks and shin-bashing logs. But you will get bonus points for persevering in baseless conditions, and this may be a good time to experiment with stone-grinding your bases the fun way (i.e. downhill).

M@ - I have directions on how to get there. There is an old map that lists three ski trails at http://www.nelsap.org/nh/uncanoonuc.html . Check it and let me know if you are seriously interested.

Kevin:

Weather = Sunny
Begin civil twilight 6:33 a.m.
Sunrise 7:05 a.m.
Sun transit 11:38 a.m.
Sunset 4:11 p.m.
End civil twilight 4:43 p.m.

It's a 33min trip from my house to the base of the auto road. Are we talking of driving to the top of the auto-road? Ski down - pack up - maybe do it again? I'd say we plan on getting there before 6:30am - we can drive/hike up in the twilight. Would be nice to be on the summit at 7am for the sunrise (in the east of course)

Just talked to AirTrafficControl - and she's kewl with it. Work is not terribly pressing right now so coming in a little late won't be bad.

All we need is BETA! I'm IN!

Like I said _ I have no skins, but it looks like maybe we can drive to the top?

M@ Hi, K's ttips friend here. Post holing should be doable because the trail up from Uncanoonuc Gardens is a popular snowmobile route - should be packed some. I'd recommend you guys leave one car down at the Goffstown Reservoir - park at the beginning of the driveway - and one at the Gardens. Then you can ski the Guido or the White Dot to Mountain Road, walk back up the hill a ways and you'll have a car there. Otherwise it's a hike. You can drive up South Mountain, I did today, but a lot of the best stuff has a ton of deadfall and needs a couple more feet to be skiable. The hiking trail can be done, but it's real narrow and there are trees down across it in 2 spots, or there were 2 weeks ago. There's a lot of fun stuff off the back of North Mtn, but ya gotta get some skins to get back out...

You've joined the right club here! Glad to have a neighbor that enjoys skiing bc as much as myself. M@ and I were just talking about meeting up at the reservoir.

Hey john: Thanks for the beta. Maybe tommorow I'll be promising you a beer or three. We shall see.

I've hiked up the garden trail before - wasn't too bad. (Geocaching this summer) That's the only part I'm worried about - hiking a trail that's not as popular as tuckerman after a lot of snow. I'm planning on being pretty pooped at the top!

I know excatly what tree you are talking about at the top of the trail. Now - all we gotta do is find the rest.

Freebird and I skied Guido's Sunday morning after the dump. Nearer the top we found many rocks through the near knee deep snow, but the lower 3/4 of the trail was quite good. We actually ran into one of the keepers of Guido's and he highly discouraged telling people about the trail. In fact he said, "Don't tell people about it, show them".

We also ran into 4 snowboarders who had hiked up a different trail and were about to stumble onto the trail just as I did about this time last year.

The hike up was about 45 minutes on Sunday, but we were breaking trail the entire way up the snowmobile trail (actually my dog did most of the trail breaking work). Now it should take 30 or less on foot... and far less with skins on.

I'd go with you tomorrow, but I'm headed to Cannon for twofer day and my first real ski day of the season.

Django -

It must have been fun to ski Guido with all that POW! Maybe M@ and I can find your tracks tomorrow. Hope you have a great time at Cannon, it should be fun with all this snow. Takes some pics.

We have to plan another trips to KC's soon.

Django - that must have been first tracks for the season @ Guidos? I hiked it about a week ago, nasty on dry leaves, and was thinking the rocks at the top were going to take a lot of cover. Ditto on the White Dot, maybe more so. Took 3 big core shots on S.Mountain today, but shop says they'll be ready tomorrow afternoon. If yer interested I'm the keeper of the mountain bike trail off the backside, has some nice lines to ski too. I work in ManchVegas so nooners r us!

kfarrar, just look S/SW from the summit and I'm sure you'll have no problem whatsoever finding our tracks. But be very careful from the top down about 1000 ft, because you will find rocks under the surface there.

John, I'm sure they were the first tracks of the season... we had hiked North Mountain Saturday afternoon looking for other lines and did find quite a few. I'd be interested in checking out those that you know about around that area. Email or IM me.

Oh yes, we do need to hit up KC's again soon. And also start planning a January Sugarbush trip before our free tickets from Journey are no good.

BTW: My new Avatar picture was taken on the trail we're hiking up tommorow.

And: Are you going to any of the McIntyre meetings? I'm prob going to the 7:30 firday meeting. Would be kewl to hit KC apres. We'll talk as we hike... or, you'll talk as you skin and I'll huff and puff as I hike.

Ok I feel like this is going to be an Oscar's speech, so I will try and make it brief. I'll let M@ tell the story and he has some pics to post. This mornings adventure would not have been possible if it were not for two GREAT individuals who so openly shared their secret stash with us. John and Django - thank you, the next beers are on me!

We found the Guido trail and it proved to be so much better than I thought. I had some great turns in the trees, in powder and before work. It made for a splendid start to a terrific day. There is so much more to say, but like I said I'll keep it brief for once an let M@ give you some of the highlights.

All my best,

Kevin

Mission accomplished!

Great trail - I owe someone some beers for the beta and the clearing. The plan went almost excatly as planned - except Kfar left his keys in my car at the top of the road! So we popped out on the bottom (after many freshies, wow, great trail) - and realized we had no keys to the car we were at!

Luckily Guido Karma was strong, and my friend Andy drove by about 2 min after we popped out, and gave us a ride. Someone up there likes us.

Here's a couple of pix:
(Note: None of this pictures give away the location of the trail...)

Well, nice to see I screwed up the reg. process and put my name on instead of a handle. Nice pics guys, wish I could have been there. Looks like a nooner is in the cards for me today, but instead of Guido's I'll be hitting my mountain bike trail off the other side 'cos it's easier to skin back to my car (no shuttle buddies today). Once my tracks are down you can follow that trail, but I wouldn't attempt jumping off any of the MTB stunts, I'm just now regaining 100% feeling in my hands from my last oak/head encounter...I'll send ya a report and directions this afternoon...

KmRN: You gotta ski that trail. Maybe some other morning - or when the sun's up longer later in the season. But I ain't waiting too long until I'm up there again!

Kfar mentioned a tuesday tradition thing - might be good.

Here's my palm log of the trip, to let folks now how long it took:

03-12-9 guido
5:55 am on the road
6:19 am @ shell-kfar here
6:52 am hiking
7:20 am top
7:32 am ski
7:54 am sign
8:00 am done, keys!

So, thanks to Django & Freeride trail breaking, hike up was 28min. Skiing down took 22min. An excellent return on investment in my book.

Definatly doing it again... as a matter of fact I think most of me is still in there going "Whoop! LU LU LU LU LU! Whoop!"

I live about 5 miles from Uncanoonuc and have snowboarded Guido's a few times but I never follow the signs. I always just end up finding my own lines through the woods. I usually park just downhill of the Garden shop on the opposite side of the road where the trail from the South Mt. meets the road.

Does Guido's dump you out in that same spot or further down the mountain? If further down, where?

Thanks alot,

Jeff

Luddite
12-20-2005, 10:49 AM
I'm thinking you're parking where they usually have the boulders across the S. Mtn trail? Guido's comes out below that, in between the water plant lot and the foot of the white dot, but I'm like you, I tend to bushwhack a lot and usually don't wind up on the actual trail that often. Some nice lines to be had off the white dot as well when the snow is deep...

If goods are present I'm thinking about ringing in the New Years on the new T4T trail. It's somewhere around here or there and its not the one that anyone is looking for.

I can't believe Undescended Testicle is on a map, and there are reviews of it out there! I "bootpacked" that trail over the course of a about 3 years . Can't ride anymore, but it's good to see it's getting some love (and hopefully maintenance). Some sections of that trail are very narrow for skiing, and extremely rocky so you want lots of cover. There are also some old stream beds that can be had from there in good snow years that rock. The hike out can be brutal, but if you want to ski this side you can bear left at Brown's Corner (coming from Shirley Hill Rd side) then take the dirt road on the right at the bottom of the hill. Park at the end (off the road), follow the snowmobile trail, taking the 1st right up the mountain. Then you can ski it as a loop with less slogging. I doubt very much the trail markers I put in on the lower trail are still there, so finding your way out could take a lot of time, but you will eventually come back to that original snowmobile trail (actually an old fire road). I'm dying to ski Uncanoonuc, but may have to wait out a medical issue. Who knew a side effect of an antibiotic could be tendons rupturing? (insert grrrrr here)

Rider.Steve
12-20-2005, 11:28 AM
Good luck with said medical rehabilitation. BTW, the T4T trail is not
"Undescended" or even close, although it is undescended as far as I know, unless RR poached it on the sly.

Jeeze guys. Don't ever say c*t or pr*ne on a post associated with sk**ng, unless it was offically sanctioned by the property owner. We are asking for trouble. Also there is just way too much beta being divulged here on a public forum. Gotta put all that in a PM please! Heck do you really want the whole world to know how truly crappy and unskiable that place is!

Took those words out, no forestry was removed in the process anyway, which is why it's not so good for skiing. Beta has been out on this area for years, but very seldom do you see anyone other than locals. On the back side you see no one, maybe a moose, because the skin out is really long and postholing it would be miserable. Kinda like a fishing hole, usually crowded where the stocking truck stops, but wide open once you have to walk 1/2 mile :)

stoneman
12-20-2005, 02:37 PM
Thanks Luddite, my post wasn't directed just at you. I agree that there is plenty of beta out on those Mtn Bike trails. But there isn't all that much on the Sk* r*ns, and we should keep it that way. I'm not averse to spilling my guts - just not on an open forum. Not that any sane person would be interested in sk**ng that crappy place anyhow.

I posted that mountain miker bap to bedevil newbies. It seems to bear no relation to anything resembling an alleged ski trail, or reality for that matter. I've researched this in situ and wound up more confusuled then I was in the first place. In fact, the mountains are mis-labeled on the map as well - the cog rail is on the north mountain, etc. Goes to show that mountain bikers have their eggs scrambled; if not before they start, at least by the end of the day.

See you at K-mart pilgrims!

I think the summits are labelled correctly, and the bike trails are a close approximaton, but the best skiing is not where the trails marked here are. It can only be found with hours of bushwhacking before the snow falls, because there is some real nasty downfall in those woods. Tracks are where you find them...shhh
