The Great Gulf is on the other side of Mount Washington from Tucks.. You have to cross over the summit from tucks to get to it..

PS: How hot is :mumster: - She climbs and skis Tucks... Talks ski tech... Has a great sense of humour... Pines for late season snow...

I hope my Fiance' doesnt read this baord...

The autoroad is the easiest way to get there. However unlike tucks you ski first then hike back up. It's also more remote...no ranger stations for when things go wrong, ya better be prepared. Gwest said that the chute in the pic is not viewable from the autoroad.

So how would one get to that chute?? Is there a hiking trail from parking on the summit??

So do you think it is still skiable after all the 90 degree weather?

It's and intriguing picture but I'll bet that it is a bit of an illusion. I think it dead ends right there. From the aspect of the photo it faces due north. The skiable gullies in Great gulf face East and North East. In fact Spaulding lake isn't visible in the picture (It should be behind the buttress on the left).

This is much further east than the skiable gullies. In addition it "feels" a bit "low" in terms of altitude. The boulders on the right are much bigger than I would expect them to be if this was taken from the rim of the gulf.

It looks nice though

Chill out guys, there are serious issues to discuss here. ;)

I agree with Castlerock that it's unlikely the gulf is as truely skiable NOW. But, wouldn't you love :lips: to ski it over the fourth of July if it is skiable???

***DOES ANYONE KNOW, WITH CERTAINTY WHAT SHAPE THE GULF IS IN? ***

M@ :ma: and skiLas :skilas: - can you acquire updated images of the main headwall section of the gulf?

Anyone know of any way to get this information (where is skicdave when you need him?)

I get the entire three days off :D , so the drive would be feasible.

I have to concur with Casterock...
There probably isnt much there at all..

You could still get a couple turns off in the bowl!!! DO IT!!!

I'll be drinking beer in Camden tomorow with all my ski buddies...

Camden, eh? My daughter races (crew) in Camden on the Cooper River. Enjoy. It should be an excellent weekend for :beermug:

I'm going to keep an open mind on the Gulf for a few days to better determine what the conditions will be like. I have so few long weekends off, I'd hate to miss an opportunity to ski. From the photos, it looks like the hike would be enjoyable... Still, if there isn't enough snow to :skifemcool: , it wouldn't be worth the drive (over 500 miles each way).

May also keep an eye out for e-savers to Denver ...Arapahoe was still open a week or two ago.... :skiplow:

:disinfo: Any long weekend you don't ski is a wasted weekend... :disinfo:

Latest pix look like there is definatly snow in the ravine, but not much. We're talking token turns here... bragging rights only, but skiing on natural snow in july in new england is an awful big bragging right. "I've skiied tux in july" is a pretty good conversation starter.

If anyone does go, let me know what time you'll be on the snow, and I'll try to save the images from the webcam and be able to provide you actual long-range photography.

Myself: I got a water-skiing party tommorow, and private-suite tickets to the sunday redsox game. Anyone watch tonight's (fri) circus!?

M@, you have Saturday wired! It should be a great night at Fenway.

That first inning was one for the ages! My 6 year old and I were high fiving from Manny's home run all the way through Damon's single.

One of the beauties of baseball, there is always a chance to see something you've never seen before.

I'm still worried that the gulf photos are an optical illusion. :skicdave: should be back from his :teardrop: tomorrow - maybe he will know what it's like. If there is reasonable snow, I'll go, but it's too far to go for a pipedream.

The Red Sox - another reason to be envious of you New Englanders - I lived in MA when I was younger and bonded to the Red Sox. :) Now it's the Phillies - ......just not the same. The Phillies are about as exciting as skiing the bunny slope.

Red Sox game was great. Lots of home runs, and our seats! Man. I've never been in a luxury box before... and now will look at them with Envy from the bleachers for the rest of my days.

M@, you are one lucky guy to be able to get the box seats, etc. If you ever need company at a weekend game in that box, let me know and I'll try to get down there and you can hook me up with the good seats. I've only been to maybe 3 or 4 games there in my life and would like to try the GOOD LIFE seats sometime! On another note, I think that, by next spring, I'm gonna join Bladegirl and get me a set of skiblades. LOTS lighter to pack in and the bragging rights are the same to me as if I were to haul in my Fischers. Anyone else ever have this thought??? OK, have fun, be safe. Al :skistooge:

Keep checking that picture, it may get updated... though I doubt it... there is no way of knowing that I know of unless someone like :skistooge: ,who is closer, were to go and take a real looksee at it. If this weekend wasn't already packed with things for me to do, I would join you :mumster: and encourage you to come a take a look for yourself. But if the looking and risk of not really skiing is not worth the drive ... well... I guess you should keep the opportunity available should you hear that it is in fact skiable, would ten jump turns make it worthwhile? you can get that in the ravine by the looks of it.

Here is a shot from the summit North, I see a patch of snow, but it is unclear if the patch ends or is cutoff by the terrain.

Love the photo :camera: and encouraging note.
I'm still waiting for :skicdave: 's opinion on the likelihood of snow before deciding for sure. I'm not optimistic - it seems totally insane -

:mumster: ,

I didn't realize that :skicdave: and :chair: Kate were heading to Mt Washington. It sure would be nice to hear a fresh report, even if all they could talk about was how much snow they saw in the distance

:mumster: , I didn't realize that :skicdave: and :chair: Kate were heading to Mt Washington. Sorry to mislead you, :skilas: . Kate :chair: and :skicdave: went to Sandbanks provincial park to :teardrop: . I have no idea where that is, but it doesn't sound like it's near Mt. Washington. I just thought :skicdave: might know what the conditions on the gulf are likely to be. (In the depths of my soul, I probably already know, but I just can't face it)

Nopester.. I mean rightster mumster. :chair: Kate and I are on a bunch of summer :teardrop: trips, but not near Mt Washington. A couple of friends want to do the Madison Hut, Lakes and Mitzpah trek however in August... we shall see.
