http://www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/science/11/02/colorado.natural.gas.reut/index.html

DENVER, Colorado (Reuters) -- The U.S. government expects to release a draft management plan this month detailing its plan for natural gas drilling in an environmentally sensitive area in western Colorado known as the Roan Plateau.

The Bush administration has marked the Rocky Mountains for more oil and gas development to lessen domestic reliance on imported energy. Environmental groups have been fighting the plans in a number of Western states.

In answer to this question about Global Warming id luv to know more and whats the worst that can happen I wrote:

"None of us knows for sure what the single worst thing would be. Our planetary systems are integrated to the extent that massive fluctuations are unpredictable...in both senses of that word. That is, we don't have the capacity to predict the single worst and also we don't know the result.

There are a number of things that will impact humanity if the warming continues:

Water levels will rise in the oceans making low lying coastal cities into centers of strife, at best. Hopefully loss of life will be less of a factor.

More of the world’s waters will be saline, making for less water in arid areas already suffering from drought and or water shortages. That in turn will impact agriculture which will make food a far more expensive commodity along with potable water being scarcer.

On the commercial side of things insurance rates will rise in coastal areas and those areas having weather changes that defy accurate prediction. As a result the CODB will be higher, pushing retail and wholesale prices up. Resources involving water use will rise in cost making the CODB much higher, again pressuring prices of goods upwards.

Some relocation of infrastructure will likely be attempted, in the short and long term that will put more cash into circulation and create jobs. I have a feeling that there will be a net loss of jobs but this relocation business may in fact help the damaged economies quite a bit. Still, the result will be inflation when coupled with the CODB matters above. That may be moderated by persistent modeling and some of the economic rationality that one could expect of folks pulling hard to respond to devastation for the greater good.

Please understand that these are the worst case matters that I have a feel for. Others may have a feel for other circumstances. Stuff like the tropospheric vortices that start an instant ice age is speculative beyond my satisfaction. However, whatever happens if/when the ocean currents actually do change direction is likely to be worse than my outlines above. How much worse...I really don't have a clue.

The only constants I count on are: greed and fear lead to tragic consequences and devastating tragedies always pull the best efforts of people united in response. In that vein, I feel that if the worst happens, We will respond in powerfully good ways. What happens after that is unknown."

I am certain the likelyhood of continued stress on the climate has gone up as a result of this election and that the stress will be more intense. The petro-industrial complex winning in this way delays remediation and intensifies imbalance.

Do you know where your snowshoes are?

Fear most of all. Our country is perpetually kept in a state of fear by our elected officials, our media, and the system. Fundamentally things are not right in this country. The rich get richer, and the poor are kept that way. Unfortunately, nobody has ever had the guts to call for the change that we need. I'm getting sick thinking about the sad state of affairs. I am going to stop talking about it now...

one-There is a power greater than my own
two-I'm not guilty of committing atrocity on 30 million russians

That means I don't have to feel like I'm responsible for committing all the crimes ever committed and can feel a very satisfactory gratitude for alpenglow and such.

My son was in a panic when he woke up because I've been saying that if W won we were moving to Canada and he's afraid he'll miss the Red Sox. Ah to be 9 again. I'm pissed at our seemingly irreversable drift towards theocracy, but I'm even more pissed that the "young voters" turned out at only 10%, way below expectations. These are the kids that will die in the Bush wars, that will inherit the deficit and crappy environment, and it appears that they didn't care enough to go and vote. The christian taliban did turn out, and presto, we lose. I am glad to see NH get it right for a change and line up with the rest of New England though.

having spent the majority of the summer in michigan (aka rural detroit) I was surprised that Kerry took Michigan. Not knowing the party history in michigan it just seemed that I saw a lot more support for Bush (bumper stickers, signs, ads etc.) than Kerry. Maybe that was the problem. Though when you spend that much on a campaign I find it hard to believe that you weren't heard.

I think Australia has it right. Voting is mandatory case closed.

I'm depressed today. But I'm glad NH voted correctly this time, and I was a small part of that. Besides voting, I took a turn holding Kerry signs in the street and met alot of nice, real people with so much spirit. The Kerry supporters in my area have alot more passion than Bush's. http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=1896&e=6&u=/nm/election_canada_haven_dc

Americans seeking to immigrate can apply to become permanent citizens of Canada, a process that often takes a year. Becoming a full citizen takes a further three years.

Good on Carolyn! Did ya see this one on Borowitz?

CANADA REPORTS HUGE JUMP IN IMMIGRATION Over 55,000,000 Requests for Citizenship Since Tuesday Night Canadian immigration officials have reported a huge increase in the number of requests for Canadian citizenship in the past twenty-four hours, with over fifty-five million such inquiries pouring in since late Tuesday night.

Of those fifty-five million requests, well over 99.99% of them came from U.S. citizens, the lion’s share residing in such states as New York, California, Massachusetts, Oregon, Washington, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Wisconsin, Vermont, Maine, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Maryland, and the District of Columbia.

Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Pierre Pettigrew said that he was “flabbergasted” by the fifty-five-million-plus requests for Canadian citizenship, adding that it was difficult to pinpoint the precise reasons for the staggering increase.

“My only theory is that after many years of exposure in the U.S., hockey is finally starting to catch on,” Mr. Pettigrew said.

He cautioned, however, that it is impossible to know exactly what is sparking the sudden interest in America’s frozen neighbor to the north: “People answering our immigration hotline say that it is hard to understand many of the American callers because they are sobbing uncontrollably.”

In other news, President Bush used his acceptance speech Wednesday to reach out to supporters of Sen. John Kerry, telling them, “You can run, but you can’t hide.”

Meanwhile, in his first statement since being voted out of office Tuesday night, Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle said, “Do you want fries with that?”

Elsewhere, experts said that exit polls may have falsely predicted a Kerry victory because Kerry voters exited while Bush voters stayed behind and voted again.

Almost got deported from the US on my first tuckerman's trip. We crossed the border at 2 in the morning on June 21st, 1997, in 3 vehicles. The last truck had all the gear. I went first in my Jeep with my buddy who was coming down to do some hiking. When asked where our skis were it was the first day of summer afterall, we said in the truck she let us go. The State Troopers called the Houlton Irving where we planned to meet up after crossing the border and said if we didn't come back in 10 minutes they were going to send the Border Patrol after us charge us with illegile entry into the states. We got back to customs and were intergated for an hour because we were short 1 pair of skis and didn't say the my buddy was hiking. They thought we were smuggling him into the country. I apologized (this is what Canadians do) for the misunderstanding and was almost hauled back into intergation for being a smart ass. We now bury our ski gear under our camping gear and say were are going camping and hiking around Mount Washington. If we do get searched and they find the skis we say we are bringing them with us because we heard there was snow. This makes for much easier border crossings.

Last time we were commin home from Mt. Washington in October, we went through one of those boarder checkpoints that are nowhere near the boarder on 91, way south of St. Johnsbury. We pulled up and the Boarder patrol guy took one look at the three of us and started asking us "drug" questions. Granted we were WAY hungover and sure looked it, but from booze not drugs. Not to mention we were already some 50miles inside the US! Oh and i forgot...we are CITIZENS! Also, we never went to Canada! When asked where we were we said Mt. Washington...apparently this wasnt good enough....They threatened the dogs , but let us go after a few minutes.

Do you think that Bush will invoke the military draft?

Do you think that Bin Laden's most recent video played any part in Bush's re-election?

....or ungreatful Iraq's who blow up cars when nobody is looking.'scuse me, but the non-interventionist folks blowing stuff up over there have gone way past ungreatful. They are boiling mad over stuff most NorAms have no idea about. Maybe there's a bunch of religious zealots involved*, but they do have a dialectic based on some very nasty interventions involving the demise of the Austro-Hungarian Empire and many things between then and now. They are neither cowards nor fools...they will die fighting if that suits their purpose. And they are a patient enemy, with subtle craft and skill.

They will not be dismissed, either by jibe or in combat. I do not suport even the slightest part of their methods nor most of what they claim to want but I cannot ignore the facts. Some say they (the people making up the nation of Iraq, which btw is not much older than Tommy T) want freedom and some others say they want a theocracy. We, that is most of us here, are utterly ignorant of the value that might be inherent in some of their customs...just as they are of the value resulting from ours.

Don't forget that their brightest and best earned their doctorates abroad...many of them at Boston University.....right in the home of the free and the brave and the brahmins of the blue blood. Given time most people will seek that which liberates them...but people will also join gangs because they are afraid...they will eschew freedom for security....just as we did here after 9-11, much to my dismay.

oh, that * above....check the zealotry of of the neo-cons.....that should be equally scary!

I do not agree with their methods or condone their attacks but I can sympathies with their causes. The Iraqi people went from an oppressive paranoid tyrant who had no qualms with murdering his own family members to a new American style dictatorship that seems content with the chaos because multinational firms are still cashing in. If Halliburton for example were to stop making money in Iraq I bet the intensity of combat operations would increase significantly. The Iraqi people don't know who to turn to for help so they join in these fringe movements and strike out at anything western be it US troops or fellow citizens who are supportive of this new American outpost in the Middle East. I really find myself split down the middle of this issue, I did not support the war in the first place and I feel like the US has no right to force western values on a population who is intellectually still in the dark ages. Evolution of a mindset can not happen in a year or be influenced by a barrel of a rifle. Iraq is not like Central America, the US can not bully a population into submission when there are so many people ready to die for their cause.

Killing them all would be a simple solution. Scary, but I am sure our current administration has that on the agenda as a contingency plan.

First they came for the Jews
And I did not speak out –
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for the communists
And I did not speak out –
Because I was not a communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists
And I did not speak out –
Because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for me –
And there was no-one left

Lincoln should have let them secede and offered amnesty to all slaves that could make it North ... and ... and ... well, alot of other things. ****ing Bible Belt!

And Rhenquist isn't likely to last another four years, so get yer tubes tied, and I mean both of you. If GW gets two appointments, not unlikely, I can see Roe v Wade getting overturned.
