A bear clawed the crap out of my friends house the other night...
Took a PIC with my cellphone... These claw marks were about 6 feet off the ground... Funny thing is.. It's a brand new house.. He hasnt even cooked in it yet...

I know a few people that have lost dogs and cats that have dissapeared.. Most likely coyotes though..

I saw a friends dog barking under a tree the other day... I drove past and looked up and sure enough... He had tree'd a bear... It was all my friend could do to call the dog in... It was pretty psyched.....

Pretty hard to get dogs to not think they're the toughest thing out there....mines just now coming into her own...at 7 or so months.

No bird seed in there either? Hmmmmm.... must be the fresh house smell..... YUM!

Buddy of mine had wrestled a bear off his covered porch last spring when it was raiding the bird seed stash. He is 6'7" and the bear was still taller than him! He finally moved the bear out by whacking it with his Limmer Hiking boots on the bear's head along with his roaring and arms outstretched. Heavy solid boots they are.

Bears are getting more inquistive these days!

Well that and the summer tourists feed them..... Which is a real problem... Plus people leave garbage out and stuff.. This house ws built on a site that had a house that he knocked down... So it wasnt even like it was a normal route thing...

You have to learn to live with bears... The outside my house doesnt bug me at all... I see him every once and a while..
:booboo:
But I keep food out of my car and don't leave garbage outside..
We have an understanding... :)

I obviously don't live as far north as you do now, but my town (denville) has a slight problem with bears. I do pretty much the same thing...keep the trash lids tight, keep the cans clean (as possible it is garbage after all), and make sure there's nothing lying around that a bear would like to eat...my yards fenced too, so it's kinda a deterrent.

But..yeah...i guess it's an "understanding" I understand to stay the heck out of the bears way...

Thanks for the photo. Da bears are nifty critters.

It was about this time last year that I went camping on the east side of the Whites -- one of the last weekends before the USFS campgrounds officially "close". The first night we were there, no one else was in the campground. We heard noises at night coming from the direction of the outhouse. In the morning, we saw this:
http://timefortuckerman.com/photopost/data/582/209bearclaws.JPG
... scratches on the inside of the outhouse door -- scratches that had not been there the day before. These marks were over my head. The door was made of foam with a fairly tough cladding... obviously those claws have a lot of penetration power.

Think the bear had ...... how do I put this delicately?...... elimination problems while on the can? I'ld make some serious marks on doors and walls if I had problems like that. http://www.timefortuckerman.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif

We have a regular visitor inn our neighborhood. I like knowing there are still some predators around that haven't been driven out. I was less enthusiastic about his visit to my garage. Here he is;

The bears have been makin there way down to Toronto too apparently. The travel down the river valleys and have been making it to the outer fringes of the city. The government banned the spring bear hunt so there are alot more bears around these days.

aka..."running for their lives". Dont be dusting the furniture with a white rag infront of a window. Might git shot at.

Don't get me started bout Turkey hunters...those guys are a little intense.

Perhaps because Turkey Hunters think too much like their prey? http://www.timefortuckerman.com/forums/images/smilies/tongue.gif

A good hunter must think like the hunted and it's habits, etc.
I can be intense at times..... just give me an opportunity!

Heard stories of guys hunting deer. Seeing something white flash in the distance and taking a shot. Only to find some one dead in there living room or in the back garden with white gloves on.

Turkey hunters are full on. Head to toe camo, face paint etc. etc. They sit VERY still for long periods calling in turkeys. I have read stories in field and stream about guys who get shot by another turkey hunter that saw the guy move in the distance.

Some hunters are soooooo pent up and the adreneln is pumping that they shoot on movement. Hair triggers.

I scared the be-jeesus outta a couple guys who were hunting in my back yard which is posted no hunting.... apparently they came over the hill....
Anyways, I've seen these guys stalking around in my field(I have apples trees and the deer love to visit) for a few days in a row so I decided to set up traps for them.....

A bit of fishing line for tripwires and several loaded water balloons filled with a flour/water mix. A couple days later I spied them at the top of my field and I watched with my binocs...... sure enough one tripped a trap and got slammed in the head with a FROZEN water balloon... His buddy ran over to see what happened and he tripped 2 other waterballoon traps which didn't freeze up and also a 'whip' trap.... They were both covered http://www.timefortuckerman.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif..... I had to cover my mouth to keep from laughing too loud. http://www.timefortuckerman.com/forums/images/smilies/biggrin.gif

I don't mind hunters but when they're too close to your house, then it's an issue.
