View Full Version : Report: Sunday 2003-04-13
Had an excellent trip, first time going solo.
The imporatnt info:
Ravine is looking great still snowise. Cold had lots of the snow hard, but the southern facing stuff (right gulleys) were slushy stuff by noon, and were lots of fun. There was a crevase on the right gulley, but it was mostly filled in and that's where about 90% of the folks were going.
Little head wall was skiiable, but I didn't ski it. Advice was it was just as easy to walk down. It was pretty easy.
Sherburn has like 4 spots where you had to walk maybe 100 yards. No problem! Personally that was my first time skiing to the bottom, did it in like 25min, WOW that was awsome!
Put a few pix up, will be putting more: http://m.sheppard.net/tuckerman/2003
Added a few more pix of the sherburn trail
Added a great big compositie photo.

I was there on Sat too. Great day. We skied Huntington Ravine instead of Tucks and were the ONLY skiers there. Things got stiffer as the shodows hit it but overall good corn. Skied all teh way to teh parking lot courtesy $25 rock skis.

I went up Lion's Head trail Saturday for the 1st time. WOOHOO is that steep! Anyway, after taking some great photos of the bowl from L.H. we went up to the summit cone, then skied down the headwall & all the way out (with only minimal walking). Fantastic weather. This week's sun should be great.

Thanks for the report M@ !
This weekend was looking great... although Intellicast forecast keeps getting cooler... well see! We have 13 going this weekend. Wahoo!
I went up on Sunday the 13th. Bluebird day. I made 2 runs over the lip from the summit snowfields. I risked my perfect Bandit XXXs but I wanted a good pair of skis for the ice on top and ball bearings/slush below. Perfect choice. Ripped the lip and jumped the steps and crevasse without issues. I made it down the Sherburne ski trail without any scratches although I did walk a bit near the bottom of the lower headwall and the bottom of Sherburne.
I posted a nice set of pictures and some video at http://chrisp.netcarrier.com

I'm PISSED!!! I WAS going up this Saturday but I just found out last night that we have a faimily Easter dinner get together this Sat! Anyone ever try to explain to a bunch of non-skiing in-laws the reason that you want to blow off a semi-sacred family tradition??? I believe that I am now probably in the same catagory as the anti-Christ to my father-in-law. To keep the waters calm, I have to postpone my trip until next weekend (Saturday the 26th). Anyone here going up next weekend? I was totally psyched for this weekend. My schedule sucks cuz the only way I can go is on Saturdays. (I normaly go up late Fri night, sack out in the car and trailhead pre-dawn.) Oh well. To all that can go this weekend, keep me in your thoughts. See ya next weekend hopefully. PRAY FOR COLD WEATHER DURING THE WEEK! LOL! I don't want too many of these warm days to deteriorate the consitions any more than necessary. Al
Way to go CP. Nice shots, saving a life in the workplace! Thanks.
Stoogie:
Family first always. In the long run, they're the ones who matter. There's tons of snow in the ravine. The sherburn is closed at the halfway point now anyway, so all you're gonna be missing is the Inferno Race and all the crowds. Go when you can, lots of weekends left, and now that the sherburn is going, one won't be much different than the next.
A few of my regular crew might be going on the 26th, and I'm gonna try to get my permission slip signed for then as well, but my kids and wife gotta be kewl with that.

M@: Good thing for 4 megapixals!
RR:
I'm glad you and all the other surfers enjoyed the pics.
I was really hoping for some headwall runs this year but the drought and the resulting snowpack leave the ravine a little short of snow for this time of year. The cool weather (icy conditions)also limited the sking to the Southern and South Eastern exposures (Lip and to the right looking up).
I went to Squaw Valley earlier this year for some Tucks like terrain and the mountain was more or less closed due to "bullet proof eastern" conditions.
Then I tried to go to Bridger Bowl Mt for some more hiking and hucking and it got washed out!
Luckly Tucks even with the drought had decent snow to save the season.
