As part of an annual long weekend ritual when we celebrate some dead British queen (Victoria...not Freddy), I'm heading down this weekend from Ottawa with a mixed bag of patrollers and hangers-on, looking forward to what few turns are left at the ravine. But while the trip is usually more about cheap  than :happyhiker: or  , a few of us are hoping to camp out and avoid the smelly communal motel room experience.

This was covered previously in the forums, but not in depth - sorry if I duplicate a bit though. We're looking for a car-accessible site, preferably trailer-free, quiet and scenic are bonuses too. No charge would be nice, but does the US has the equivalent of crown land where you can camp for free? What are the state park sites like compared to private campgrounds down there anyway? And how busy might places be, given that nobody seems to take reservations this time of year?

Dolly Capp was mentioned, but it sounds crowded, plus we'd prefer to be closer to North Conway since that's where we'd party with the rest of the crew. Oh, and a platform at Hermit isn't likely, we can't get there til mid-afternoon Friday so they'll be booked solid.

Thanks in advance!

I wouldnt assume that the tent platforms will be taken...
I've seen them go empty on many weekends...

Dolly Cop and Barnes Field are the closest..
Dolly Copp is a nice campground... BUT - I havent been there in over 10 years since I started staying at the shelters...

I believe it's legal to ppitch a tent in the woods in places... Not in a drainage and not above treeline... Or something like that... I forget...

Good luck!

I can say with certainty that the Hermit Lake tents were NOT full this weekend and I would imagine that they will not be again this coming weekend. You can camp in the Great Gulf Wilderness wherever you like under treeline and more than 100 yds from any trail. I'm not so familiar with the rest of the wilderness camping rules around here, try the AMC

I just stayed at dolly copp. Its nice, but you have to make reservations 7 days in advance.

Otherwise its 1st come 1st serve.
