Arrived Summit 09:30: 49 degrees, NW 10-15mph, sunny with patchy clouds
I got oriented and took a nap. Woke up: 59 degrees, WNW gusting to 40mph, partly sunny.
I walked over to the GG Wilderness to scope out some snow. From the road up Airplane (I think) is narrow and has two remove-ski spots close together around 1/2 way down, otherwise is 1100 vert of snow. Nothing else in GG looks very inviting except a chute that is on the summit side. Nice lines, a little wider, but prolly only 300 vert or so. I'm thinking of doing laps here tomorrow with KMRN whom I expect at noonish after hiking over further to get a closer look at airplane. There are some field like patches on the other side of Cray that may be interesting as well. I'll check them out too at some point.
From what I could see from the road, Hillman's is done for the season. LG looks good from the headwall to just below the dogleg, couldn't really tell but it looks like there isn't much snow connecting it to the base of the ravine, I'll try to update tomorrow. planning on a sunrise hike... we'll see about that, but at least a hike over there before KMRN gets here.
Current: 52 degrees, WNW 20mph, I think I can see an Ocean Liner, is that the Queen Mary?

Bring the shovel...one never knows when sliding might be available...in that case, helmets on and take it easy
Freaking RIGHTOUS reports from the top! Man I wanna be there! Tell us about the scene and folks and what you're up too. Was hoping you'd be online from there.
PIX?? Dare I beg for more?
Glad you got everything together for the time at the top. We're all anxiously awaing trip report 1.2 at midnight when you realize it's a clear night and you can see more stars than all of us combined.
I say bring skiis tommorow. All this (cough) summer weather is ruining what little snow we have left.
Hey Skilas: If you can, when they call in the report to NPR in the morning, do something in the backround, like a cough or sing a song or something... I usually hear it.

SkiLas + KmRn : You HAVE to get yourselves in this picture here:
(Click and all will be clear)

Just tell us what TIME and we will make sure to save the picture.
Heel clicks or goggles or the secret hand sign would be excellent.

M@ - that is so cool, we definitely WILL try to get in the deck picture. I'll say 1pmish, or sometime around there. PM or email me (kmrnskier@aol.com)your cell #, and if I get service up there, I will call you to let you know what time exactly. That is SOOOO cool!!

we definitely WILL try to get in the deck picture. M@, I can email you at whatever time to give you a heads up. I'll ask about the refresh rate on that view and try to timew it perfectly.
cell phone coverage is disappointing. As I walk around the summit cone I got No-Service or I got SOS-Only. Once, for a brief moment my light went green, but when I tried to make a call, nothing, I tried to find that exact spot, I will call it the green spot, but to no avail. Weather may change that.
Current: 51.3 degrees, WWNW 20mph, I still think it was the Queen Mary in the distance but now I can't tell. Some cloud cover and a light, almost imperceptable drizzle.
Forcast for tomorrow is like today was just slightly cooler

Awesome! We've talked about planting an insider atop the rock for years, and now we've finally done it. Thanks skilas!
How about the Scotia Prince rather than the QM? SP leaves Portland every night for Nova Scotia, turns around and comes back.
I think I can see an Ocean Liner, is that the Queen Mary?
Both QE2 and QM2 where in England on the May 1st, but the QM2 was scheduled to head to New York that night, and the QM2 website lists an itenrary that has it leaving NYC on the 18th, so there's a chance it could be off our cost right now. Very hard to find a "Where is the QM2 RIGHT NOW" web link.

skislas -
I will have my radio on as soon as I reach the parking lot tomorrow night. I've got 5 mile coverage so I should be able to pick you up at the summit. I should be pulling in around nine. I'll tune into 9/14 so we can make some plans for Saturday.

Kfar - I'm definitely heading up on Saturday, however, I think we plan to get some turns on the snow patches leftover off the auto road. Are you staying at the lean-to, or in the lodge?

Yo KmRn: You skiing airplane or the "snow fields" (i.e. Patches) ?? I'm wondering if it might be fun to drag the fam up there, throw Anna on the skiis for a picture or two and then visit SkiLas at the top. (Skilas: IS this a good idea?) I'm dad-boy for the weekend, but having pictures of Anna skiing mt. Wash at the Age of 3 is gonna earn me some points WAY down the road me thinks.

I think thats a great idea.
As for airplane, I don't think we'll ski airplane... I want to hit the chute we looked at for at least a couple of runs then on to the patches I think!

M@ - Airplane looks good for the first 1/3 of it, then a huge break that I really wouldn't want to hike in with my ski boots. Who knows what we'll end up doing.
