View Full Version : First turns lists (prospectus)

RR

Perhaps a first turns list is in order as another of our end of summer games. First northeast turns by a T4T in RI,MA,CN,VT,NH,ME,PA,NY,OH, and in PQ,PO,NB,NS. List for each state or province. Photo proof required, the story that goes with it is the tiebreaker.

Goofy ribbon for each state and province and a cup for the first in among all the northeast settings. Each season starts after the snow is gone from both TUX and the Gaspe or all T4T have hung up their boots and declared an end to the season.

The Moderator-in-chief schedules the Awards banquet (fixed menu: pizza and beer, salad optional). Toast by the cup winner is required.

If neither condition is met, the Moderator-in-chief declares and schedules the No Summer banquet(fixed menu: pizza and beer, salad optional). Toast by the Moderator-in-chief to be traditional. The list does not commence for that year and commences after snow's gone, per above.

First Turns.....Of the season? Or of a location (e.g Mountain Name)? Commercial area or BC?

Thanks

Ontario was listed as PO, please correct the abreviation...thanks

Mea Culpa...The Garden State should not have been left out.

Any other northeast states or provinces?

Please consider that no matter how one looks at it I came up with the idea inorder to have another excuse to drink beer and eat pizza. Also, I have a fondness for the goofy things people will say when making toasts at such occasions!

More like first pix of first turns, in the state or province. Wherever you can get some turns on snow. If you make the snow or someone else makes it? Sure, why not? It about the pizza and the beer.

Although, if you go to all the trouble to make the snow with a portable snow maker in an effort to win this silly contest, please have the decency to stay in the spirit by wearing "fancy dress".

Might not be an exciting story to go along with it but a photo would be no problem... could always fall in some mud if that helps. Points for the most desperate skier maybe?

I'd have to head up to Tremblant if I wanted some early runs

RR

It all counts, if it involves snow. Water skiing could count in a different contest...

and, yes, if you want to make some turns on snow wearing water skis, by all means, go for it.

Judging is by date first (remember, that's turns not turn) and if needed, voting of T4T for the best tiebreaker.

This thing could be a massive undertaking...I'm getting thirsty already!!!

I had a BMW slide sideways right into my bumper of my pickup many winters ago... TRASHED the side of the BMW... The truck was unscathed..

I snowboarded down the side of that road one year too... ahhh.. memories...

I miss The After!

Speaking of skiing on water skis, did anyone see that article on shane mcConkey where he ripped a 45 degree slope on a pair of water skis?
That guy rules.

What about Connecticut?

There was no CT in that list, yet all states surrounding it were?

"Sniff Sniff"

I feel left out, Am I the only one from CT on this board?

I know of no state referred to as CN, except perhaps, catatonic (since CT is already taken). So I must conclude CN is a typo for CT

I heartily accept the challenge, although I'm at a severe geographic disadvantage these days. One of you harcore types ought to get it this weekend. You only need an inch or so of ice and rime on the Autoroad to make it skiable....

Glad that you entered QC in the contest, RR

Assuming it needs some snow on the ground (unlike oct 8, last year, at Killington), I have interesting chances to make turns in october, but with all the ****** school, I have very few chances to be the first...

Dave : Too bad that Tremblant is quite closer for you than La Réserve, cause the base of L-R is at the elevation of the mid-mountain of Tremblant... so you wouldn't have to hike a lot to reach the early snow. (Tremblant's base = 750' ; La Réserve base = 1600')

RR
09-30-2003, 09:46 PM
Yup, that was a typo for CT.

I'm not so sure that "on the ground" has to mean "not on the roof". If someone enters a photo of snow coverd roof skiing, they'd better have some interesting fancy dress and a prime story. Be safe, but whacky sounds legit to me.

In fact, I propose that the whackiest skiing outfit of the entries is worth a pitcher of beer all by itself.

And folks, this could be so big that T4T t-shirts, hats, mugs and steins could be collectors items on e-bay. Right up there with Kerouac bobble heads now over $350.

Goofy ribbon for each state and province and a cup for the first in among all the northeast settings. Would that be a nice silver plated cup something along the lines of Lord Stanley's? or a very large plastic cup full of the winner's choice of beer?

I read that article on Shane McConkey. I wonder what ever made him think of waterskis. A 45 degree slope? I probably hurt myself real bad on my AT gear.

He's nuts. But then again he had a parachute strapped to his back.

The parachute and the waterski event were seperate. He used his "spatula" skis with a parachute to huck a monster cliff. Then he skiied a different face on waterskis without a parachute. The best part is when he claimed to throw em sideways and grind a snow ridge for 2000vf.

One guy on the last Rangers cup team alledgedly used it as a Jell-O mold, I think it was the Rangers As a ranger fan i never heard that, but they did make the top ten lists of funniest cup stories. Seems one night Brian Leetch, Richter, and Mess brought it out to some NYC bars and got really hammered. It was actually in Leetch's possession when he took a taxi cab home, and actually left it in there forgetting about it until the next day when he woke up and didnt see it in his brownstone. NHL officials had to go to the cab company and pick it up. It got dented too. This is actually the event that caused the NHL to adopt the cup chaperone policy, who accompanies it 24/7. A wallet or cell phone phone is unbderstandable BUT ITS FREAKIN LORD STANLEYS CUP LEETCHIE!!!!

A trophy cup, but unless we have a mega rich benefactor the cup should hold "a pint" and not effect taste. A T4T stein or T4T schooner mounted on a trophy base seems good.

Elwood, we were out today and saw nice color in the Waterville Valley region, we also saw a lot of the drizzly mists. Nice day for a walk out to the garden.

I'm actually not in waterville now. Im in school at the university of maine. (orono) But I go back in the summer. I've lived there since '84 when i was born. Ever skiied at the colby ski slope kfarrar?

kfarrar
10-02-2003, 12:54 PM
Yep. I used to ski and taboggon on the slope.

I 've been to UMO several times for Diving Camp way long time ago. All of our state swim meets were held there too. Its a great campus.

I hear waterville is making a come back too. Not so depressed now since the mills closing years ago. We left just be Keyes closed, my dad was lucky to get out when he did.

Waterville making a comeback id say is a strech. :( But it definatly has stopped going downhill. The colby ski slope is right near my house, I still occasionaly poach it in the winter.

kfarrar
10-02-2003, 06:01 PM
Poach it?

Do they accually not want you to ski/ride/sled on it?

On a Saturday there used to be 50 + people hanging out there. Parents would drop the kids off, go shopping and come back and get us.

Well, kfarrar, its been closed for years. I can't even remember when there were real trails there but my parents can. There are 30 foot high trees now, except in a few places where the trees just "didnt grow".  The lift towers have all fallen down and rusted. The parking lot is totally gone.

I'm a colby student(this year im at Dartmouth for an exchange) and the alpine team was seriously considering jacking the groomer, doing some bushwacking and fixing up the trails last season. Of course it was all a lot of talk, but quite a few people do go up there to try and get some runs in.

I'vr done a little bit of "gardening" on my own in there, so there are 2 single tracks down, but one is used by snowmobilers. That would be cool if the colby alpine took an interest in that place again, but it definatly needs some work.
I didn't know anyone bothered with that place except for me.

just take a look to the other thread... there is one... I really look idiot, but you should recognize me a bit.

Anyway, I took a couple of pics of my tracks, cause I knew there would be some people thinking I was lying. If you want them, I'll post them on Yahoo (if I had a place to put my pics online, except FTO, I would have posted a dozen of them)

Well the T4T first tracks of the season seems to have been won in P.d'Quebec, making franko the odds on 2003/2004 season winner for the stein/schooner/mug*. I suspect that a trend has already been started.

we still have yet to find winners for the rest of the states and provinces, Quebec having been won along with the "First Tracks of the Season".

*Maybe it's time to set up a deal with cafeshops (http://www.cafeshops.com) or some other such vendor for T4T merch. We don't have to inventory the stuff, the vendors screen it on order.

Great RR. I'll start by looking into the possibility of setting up a T4T Cafe Shop for T-shirts / Long Sheeve T-shirts and such... maybe add a poll on the topic first. Then we can look into the awards topic.

I notice on Cafe Press (http://www.cafepress.com/cp/info/) that T-shirts only come in white... whats with that?

I still think some Mt. Washington turns could've been had that first weekend on the 4th-6th of October. I'm guessing there was a large enough snowfield somewhere up above the bowl; It looked like there had been one about a week of hot weather later...

Still, I wasn't able to get up there, except for a foilage hike a week too late... :(
