Hi all,

Going up thursday. Never been up this early in season. Do people line up at Pinkham Notch for shelter spots...assume descent weather and snow conditions. If we can't get a spot and hike up thursday late afternoon or early p.m., will be heading up {oh my god it's} early friday a.m.

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Rich

You shouldn't have a problem getting a spot on thursday - I never have. (Done it maybe 5 times, on perfect weather weekends). It usually fills up friday morning. Last 3 times I've camped on thursday night we had a lean-to to ourselves. Friday night it's usually packed. But it's all weather dependant.

Justin: The campsite availability and crampon questions happen almost once a week.

I tried to get a FAQ movement, but it got kinda tangentized and commiteed to death.

But maybe a final - once and for all thread on these questions and make them sticky in one of the forums would solve it.

Crampons are an absolute requirement YEAR-ROUND. Any fool that heads up the TRT without is looking for trouble! As for camping, you can pitch a tent anywhere you can find a comfortable spot, just make sure that you are UPHILL of a big rock in case of ice-fall. If your tent is close enough to the TMCH you may even be able to order a six pack delivered to your flap on FRS freq. 4:20.

in all the years i've been going, i've never used Crampons in the spring.... and i'll never use them in the spring... seems to me this thread is now the same as stupid dew-b question (http://timefortuckerman.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2117)

like el-bager says crampons can be difficult/dangerous alone. Personally find to gt in th way more then anyting else in april/may/june.

Usually I opt not to use them on the trail. On Saturday however we were tod the trail from HoJos to the bowl was quite icy. My friend borrowed my crampons to make life a little easier at this point.

It is worth noting that the Cheryl Weingarten death occurred on May 1.

Do you really need to bring Tampons with you? If so, what do you use them for?
