3M Duct Tape

There's a big difference between Duct Tape and "Grey tape of the same size as real duct tape... but should fool the average consumer."

It's gotta have the little fibers in both directions. I'm not positive the roll I have now is 3M but I'm pretty sure it is. It's been up and down the ravine about 3 times so it's lost the inside part which advertises it's maker.

3M all the way.
Duck tape is probably the worst brand for gooifying over time.

Do you find that 3M duct tape performs better in heat than other duct tape? Direct sunlight can cause a mess with the cheap kind....

The stuff I use is called Boat Tape. I get it from Piragis Northwoods Company through their Boundary Waters Catalog. (http://www.piragis.com on the internet). The catalog says it's tougher and stickier than regular duct tape. It doesn't seem to get gooey and it sticks to nearly everything. This photo shows it used on a paddle (center prop for the tarp) north of the Arctic Circle. It stayed in place for about 500 miles of paddling.

(Just to keep this picture on a ski topic -- check out the end poles on the tarp.)

I prefer Gaffer's Tape, but use some nifty little velcro straps made by Fischer to make that "A-frame". I carry about 16" of gaffer's tape wrapped on each ski pole. The tape is replaced a few times a year as those poles are also my trekking poles.

Addendum: Tommy tthat boating tape looks great...I will be checking that stuff out pronto!

I prefer Gaffer's Tape

I actually work as a gaffer once in a while and am very familiar with gaffer tape. I don't use it in an emergency kit because i) it is designed to be removed and isn't as sticky as most duct tape -- in fact it sticks best to itself and works best in situations here it can be wrapped completely around the object being taped; and ii) it isn't very strong, lacking the reinforcing strings of duct tape. It is, however, easy to work with, tears without having to use your teeth to start it, doesn't get gooey and doesn't leave a mess on whatever it was stuck to. It also comes in plain black instead of shiney silver.

It looks grey - the stuff in your picture looks white.

That's the stuff. It is silvery gray. Color balance in the picture has been shifted a little to get decent exposure under the fly.

TenSeven: The pic was self shot during a 1000 mile solo paddle on the Yukon River. url for the whole trip is:

3M all the way, though I have no complaints with Duck Brand. A friend of mine gave me a section of Airplane mechanics tape that sticks to everything, is almost as waterproof and steamproof as glass, won't come off unless you want it too, and appears to have no glue whatsoever, but regular 3M duct tape works for most of my needs.

I did use that airplane tape to seal a blown radiator hose in my car while it was hot and leaking, I drove the car for a week before I replaced the hose and it never leaked again.
