Excellent post by s2oleary titled "trip journal". Everybody allways ask, what do I bring? When is the best time? Crampons? skins? snowshoes?, How is it going to be this week-end. Geez, if only I hadn't sold the crystal ball in the yard sale.
All kidding aside, Tuckermans is a pilgrimage into the back country. Tuckermans is a bowl full of snow that melts, freezes, melts, gets rained on, snowed on, sunned on, day in day out until it reaches it's inevitable end, rock. The trail is subject to the same conditions a different elevations. Check the weather on the internet, for the vally, at the summit, and one of the best places - Pinkham Knotch visitor center has an excellent, actual report, read them all anywhere, everywhere and form your own opinion. THAT'S what it is all about. By the way, let me save you the learning curve. The weather in No. Conway, is warmer that Pinkham knotch, that is warmer than the bowl, that is warmer than the summit, get it?After you hike too much stuff up, -you won't do it again. When you forget to bring a warm hat, -you won't do that again. When you see someone die, right in front of your eyes from a BIG chunk of ice, you will be more respectful of the falling ice hazard and on and on and on. Bring everything you need and nothing you don't. I find myself making those decisions right in the parking lot, just before I hit the trail. Yes like last year (3x), the saxaphone stays in the car if it isn't going to be a "bluebird" day. Sometimes I make bad decisions, I learn. Take it all in, get all the info you can, make the call. That's what it's all about. If you were an experienced Tuckermans traveler and saw me walking up the trail my first time, you would smile to yourself, shake your head a little and think, keep comin buddy, the trail will teach you, yep, that trail will teach you, bet you don't bring that extra pair of ski boots and that piano next year........:-)
See you in the bowl. /Saxman
