Yup NELSAP is pretty well known.. especially by the backcountry community I would think. Interesting to check out all the lost areas. I was amazed at how many there were.

Check out the link on Cannon. the top trail to the right leads to a short hike up to the begining of Mittersil trail. Very narrow at the begining of the trail then opens up to an old ski lift. The trail to the right of the lift ends up at the bottom of cannon and intersects with their trails. There is also an option to go backcountry off the top of the begining of the trail. You will need to leave a car down the road from cannon in order to get back to the ski area or hitchhike!

A friend pointed me to NELSAP a few years ago and I have wondered if anyone has explored any of the lost areas in recent years. I moved to NH in '92 and had skiied King Ridge in New London a couple of times before it closed. It was a small 'upside down' mountain - you parked at the top of the hill so the last run of the day was up the chairlift.

I've skiied Mittersill once back in the mid 90's (boy, time to make another trip) and remember taking the chair to the summit and heading right off of the lift - keep the speed up to minimize the amount of hiking before heading downhill. Going alone may not be too bad - I'm sure you'll see others making the trip as it is pretty well known. You do have to be careful not to head too far to the left (West?) as you head down or you'll have a long walk back to the lifts.

I've been skiing king ridge in New London for a few years now...wopping 775 feet!! nobody skis it though, kind of flat though but still real easy to get to...you can drive almost to the top. Anybody else remember when this place was in operation? anyway, if you've been up there lately it's amazing the development.... big 'ole houses all over the "the peak"...

This is how I know I'm getting old, more of my favorite areas are on NELSAP than are open
King Ridge, Big A, Whittier, Hamilton Hump and Atlantic Forest in Mass., Powder Hill in S. Berwick, maybe it's me; the list is almost as long as the list of companies who went CH11 after I started working for them! Hey I was a startup kinda guy ...
Guido is on there :->

Hmmm, I wonder if my name is on some kind of Lost Skiers List?

I've done about 20 of the "lost areas." My favorites have been Watatic which is a fair size hill that can be reached by a nice ski tour up to the summit from a parking area on Rt. 119, Cat Rock (actually located in toney Weston, MA) where the neighbors call the police if you have a beard or are a guy with a pony tail, and Whittier, another fair sized drop that is a good spot to stretch on the way up 16 to Conway, NH.

I heard that was privately owned and occasionally operated for friends of the owner and if you got caught poaching they would call the police and have you arrested. I've looked at that a bunch of times, but once I heard that I never thought about it again.

I like to answer that with "Older than I look and younger than I feel" :D
Jest about 49 and still not mature. I do miss some of those areas though, especially Whittier. Had some great times there....

One problem is that the Taft trail from the top of Cannon towards Mittersill has been closed for weeks and may be patrolled. You can see the hike up from the Cannonball quad which goes to the top of Cannon if you look over to your right.

I was at Cannon yesterday and the Taft trail was up and running...thin cover though. We hiked up to mitersil early in the morning for fresh tracks in the 4-6 inches of powder they received the night before. Best runs I have had all season. Lets hear it for Cannon!

Yup.... Whaleback made the list... used to be fun nightskiing there and freezing my butt off from subzero temps! Tubing was entertaining although short. I heard (maybe a rumour) that KUA (Kimball Union Academy) private school aquired it and planned to use it for their students.

I used to ski King Ridge when it was operating and now I ski it via snowmobile. One of the caveats to the developement was that they HAVE to set aside land for public use..... including snowmobiles. I've skinned there a few times and it's great! Some of the former trails are getting grown over by saplings now. Makes for interesting whipping effects....
There can still be 'lengthy' runs if you get to the top of where the T-bar used to be. There's a warming hut up there in the old ski patrol shack now.

Mittersill is a fun place.... a few 'hidden' trails that other skinners/backcountry people haven't tracked yet. And I won't divulge that info. Anyone happen to still have a Mittersill trail map?

yeah Nelsap is an excellent resource for some good backcountry options.

I heard about it a couple years ago on Chronicle and checked it out and saw a few potential spots to hit up...
Two seasons ago after a big dump my brother and I hiked up and skied down Crotched Mountain (this is before it reopened)...the result excellent firsttracks

I posted one in my gallery taken from NELSAP.

(I don't know how to put it in a message. The instructions say to use something like the UBB Code, but no code appears in the photo description.)

ya that's been the rumor at least.... my roomate in college was a KUA alum as i am a Gould Academy Alum, we had some friendly rivalry. He told me about the same rumor. KUA's ski team trained there for years but now trek over to ascutney.
