overnight at Hermit Lake Shelter

Since I have a one way five hour drive I want to spend at least one night at the shelters near HoJo's. I have read conflicting information about reserving a spot (some say you can call, some say you can't reserve a spot until you show up there). If I roll in around 3:00 in the afternoon on an average Saturday in April what are the odds there will be a spot available? I'm not even sure how many spots are available in the shelters and or tent platforms.

I've been up in April for the past 5 years.

[FACT] You can only reserve a spot in person at the bottom. No exceptions. You can reserve one spot for each person who is at the desk when you make the reservation.

If the weather forcast is good, you will find the shelters full on sat afternoon. In my expierence, the shelters fill up by fri afternoon. There 'may' be a tent platform (which is basically a spot on the snow at this time of year), but even those fill up.

I typically show up thursday night and it's about half full.
