Hi everyone,
My name is Emily and I am 16 years old. On March 9-10 I am taking part in an AMC workshop. The description of the program states that we may explore Tuckerman or Huntington Ravine, Gulf of Slides, and Doublehead Mountain. I saw the pictures, and the bowl looks extremely steep!! Im nervous.

However, last month I took part in an Outward Bound course in Colorado. That included 8 days of backcountry riding and camping. We hiked for 5 hours with a 60 lb pack to get to the camp field. We slept in snow caves- it was amazing. The snow was excellent. I was the only girl out of 10 people so i was so nervous, but everyone was so nice. I will probably be the only girl on this AMC workshop as well.

Since I completed the course with no problems I should be ok for this. Could you tell me how long the hike is to the Ravine? Could you tell me any information about the Ravine that would be useful? Are the slopes really steep? What should I be expecting? I hiked the revine a couple years ago, but I dont really remember it. Any information would be useful.

Thank you,
Emily

Emily, Tuckerman's Ravine is a big-mountain environment, with avalanches, crevasses(in the spring), rock falls, at times deadly weather, very steep slopes, and everything else that goes with the mountains. Having said that, there is NO reason you shouldn't have a great time on your workshop. The AMC people are very well trained and experienced and will teach you how to safely enjoy this magnificent place. If you follow their instructions and advice, and use your own good common sense, you'll have so much fun you'll be itching to climb these mountains as often as you can.

Emily - fear is good, it shows the respect that these mountains deserve. I agree with MtnMan - the folks on the AMC workshops know their stuff. Tuckerman's (steep) and Huntington (steeper) are fantastic places to visit, and areas that I'm sure you will return to. I've been going there since I was 12 (34 years) hiking and skiing, most recently on 1/5/2002 to Washington summit via Lion's Head. Enjoy the workshop and learn all that you can. It is one of my favorite places.
Specifics: 2.4 miles (~ 2 hours)to Hermit Lake Shelter (aka HoJo's) Tuckerman's is 45 minutes further. Huntington is ~2 miles (I think) to the Harvard Cabin.
