If you haven't already, go out and get yourself and iPod. I skied with mine for the first time yesterday, and that thing was great. Non-stop background music. It's light, portable, has tons of room for music, and has a super-slick interface. They are a little on the pricey side though...

i just bought a Dell dj. flip flopped over that and an ipod. Dell won though. a bit cheaper, more memory and better battery, plus a few freebie add ons.
YES! they are slick as hell, i highly reccomend one. can't wait for tucks this year! no longer have to haul up my CD player and those god awful CD's (hey, anywhere i can shed weight) and you know what that leaves room for... EXTRA BEER! :D
apple just announced the mini ipod the other day as well. not sure on price but they are about the size of a business card

I plurged on an HP iPAQ pocket PC. (ok it was :santa: ) Its fantastic! Didn't buy it for music... but it does have windows media player if I want to listen to MP3's. Now I can surf the net from the :hottub: (or not!).
All we need is WIFI at lunch rocks and I can start sending photos live from Tux! :camera:

I looked at the Dell DJ... The iPod won because the interface is so cool, all touch sensitive buttons..no moving parts. Plus coupled with iTunes, there is just no better way to manage your music. iTunes is sooooo much better than musicmatch. But everyone should have one of these gadgets!

I have heard the complaint that the iPod's battery is essentially unreplaceable -- so after some period (less than a year of good usage?) it turns into a paperweight. Can anyone confirm or deny this?

A very common misconception, and unfortunate because Apple has a bad rep on this issue. There was a problem with the 1st gen iPod battery, and many users were disgruntled. Apple has since improved the battery (now on 3rd gen iPod), and provided solutions for dead batteries. Official replacement from Apple costs $99, unofficial replacements from other sources are around $50.

They play WAV, MP3, or AAC (apple proprietary format...and probably the best choice). But you can put WAV files on there if you want a lossless codec.

yup, i would say the iPod defenitley wins in the cool factor as far as touch sensitive buttons etc. we had one at our camp at IT this year. made me want one. finally came down to price and Dell won. Musicmatch works for me though, but then again i havn't played around on itunes either.
elwood, if you havn't already, check out nugs.net (freebies). there are many more that elude me right now. one in particular that i will post tonite when i get home (have the addy on the house computer)

Is AAC a lossless format? Does it matter with the IPod...?

AAC is not lossless, but it is not as much compression as Mp3. They do sound alot better than Mpeg-layer 3 files. Since I am not trading my iPod music, I have just imported all of my shows as AAC to save on file space. Shows still sound great!
I got a Rio back about 3 yrs ago - it was great then. Perfect for running (i.e. no moving parts) - but it is woefully low on memory.
I bring it to tux though - only way I can get to sleep, as it drowns out the snoring.
Looking forward to trading devices with ya'll and tasting your music in the ravine!
My favorite (for the ravine) has always been, "Shine on you Crazy Diamond"

As you can see by the report el-bagr linked, AAC beats out MP3 at almost all rates. While the difference isnt huge, I think AAC sounds much better.

I'm definitely looking at an iPod. I LOVE iTunes, even though I use Windows XP, and all my music is already loaded in there, so it would be really easy for me (my computer already has a Firewire PCI card as well). The lack of a replaceable battery was my one qualm about it, but $50 isn't bad!!! ($99 for a $299 gadget seems a bit steep though).
And the base model has 15 gigs! I have between 50-60 hrs of music on my computer right now, and it's only 3.some gigs!!!!
