My son & I are planning our first Tucks trip for this Friday (based on the glorious weather report). I have read ton's all over the internet, including this great site, but some parts are starting to become a blur. I have done searches to try to clarify, but have read some conflicting things.

I am confused about the hike from HoJo's up, and am trying to get a few details nailed down.

Advice regarding the following will be most appreciated. General info as well as specific to the conditions we will likely encounter this Friday.

1) Is it a bad idea to put on Alpine boots at HoJo's and go the rest of the way in them, or is it a better idea to make the change at lunch rocks ?

2) If we go from HoJo's with non-ski boots, what is a good choice? I gather that crampons are not necessary (I don't have any).

Will a hunting boot with a lug sole get the job done ?

I'd love to wear my snowclogs! Assuming no fresh snow and a packed trail is this crazy ? If snowclogs would work, would microspikes/yaktrax be a must (I can borrow/buy these) ?

3) Can non-skiing footwear be left either at lunch rocks or HoJo's for pick up later, or must they be packed for the hike/ski ?

TIA

yer in luck. there is a complimentary bag/shoe check at hojos due to the busy weekends and folks constantly losing stuff.

Responses below. There are other options too.

Advice regarding the following will be most appreciated. General info as well as specific to the conditions we will likely encounter this Friday.

1) Is it a bad idea to put on Alpine boots at HoJo's and go the rest of the way in them, or is it a better idea to make the change at lunch rocks ? Yes! Bad for feet! Bad for boots!
2) If we go from HoJo's with non-ski boots, what is a good choice? I gather that crampons are not necessary (I don't have any). There are some not-so-expensive "traction aids", but ski poles and careful foot placement are usually enough to get to the ravine

Will a hunting boot with a lug sole get the job done ? Yes, use the hunting boots, esp if they are waterproof

I'd love to wear my snowclogs! Assuming no fresh snow and a packed trail is this crazy ? If snowclogs would work, would microspikes/yaktrax be a must (I can borrow/buy these) ?Traction aides? Yes, in the mush they are a must. Snow CLogs? Yipes! Well, tight-fitting GoreTex Gaiters could make that work

3) Can non-skiing footwear be left either at lunch rocks or HoJo's for pick up later, or must they be packed for the hike/ski ? Leave them in a bag tied to your pack or in your pack. Lunch rocks is not the safest place to sit during ice falls
