Hey, my friend and I are headed up to Washington this weekend to snowboard down the Sherburne trail, and seems like there will be a lot of fresh snow. From what I have gathered, you usually don't need snowshoes to hike up.
Can anyone tell me if they think we'll need them, and even if we don't need snowshoes, would you recommend using poles?
I hope people will be there skiing! We've had this trip planned for a long time with hopes of watching people come down, and also enjoying the ride down.
Thanks!
I'm sure you will have plenty of company this weekend.
New snow on Friday, going up on Saturday? Not sure if the Tuckerman ravine trail will be packed by then.

lots of snow last week too. kept folks under cover and at home as i didn't see much of anyone either sat or sun. this weekend is bound to be super sketch above treeline in many areas.
cog sounded busy tho, but that's expected:D
should be a great weekend!

It's never bad to have a bit of gear you might need. If your poles are the 3-Section type it's easy to just stow them away when you don't need them.
Because of all the traffic, the Tuckerman Highway (the TRT) can get slick, poles can be very handy if you don't have crampons or other traction aides. Because of all the traffic, snowshoes are only rarely needed for the TRT.
Special Note:If you do have snow shoes and can discipline yourselves to stick to the very edges of the Gulf of Slides Ski Trail as you go up, I think you will find the GOST worth your attention as well. Please do not posthole on the GOST
Snagging the Sherby and the GOST on the same day is a reall nice way to earn your thirst :beermug:

if your hiking up in snowboard boots, i would recommend snowshoes. even if its packed down. the traction is worth it.
