Hi All. New to the forum and back country skiing. My cousins and I were planning to do Tucks this weekend, but if the storm system moves in on Friday, it looks like it would be out of the question. I believe only one of my cousins has all the necessary avalanche gear (beacon, probe, shovel and knowledge) I've tried to look at other areas around the forum to see what would still be low avalanche conditions even with the snow. Would the cog be out of avalanche danger? If so, how does it compare to the tuckerbrook trail off of Cannon? or how does the sherburne trail compare to tuckerbrook? Just wondering if it would be worth it to hike up and ski the sherburne or do tuckerbrook the hard way. We did tuckerbrook the easy way last month. Anyways, we're staying in Franconia, so just trying to figure out our options for this weekend. Any suggestions are well appreciated. :D

Thanks, Kyle.

Welcome!

T-brook and the associated Glade variations will be nice so it's win-win.

The deal breaker should be the wind first. It the wind is high, staying in the trees is a good thing.

I suppose the Cog run could slide, but I don't recall that it has. The Cog is a good way to get a look at things if the weather cooperates and it's good, moderate skiing. That's an investment that can pay off when making plans for further exploration as well. Another winner.

The John Sherburne Memorial Ski Trail is a really interesting trail and is a great way to retreat if weather from the bowl up is tough or to avoid slidey conditions in the Ravine and/or Hillman's Highway. Skin up the TRT and ski down the Sure Burn. Another winner as every trip close to or in the Bowl is worthwhile....especially when the snow is nice on the way down.

If you do a run on the Sherby, why not take a second run, but go Up and Down the Gulf of Slides Ski Trail? It is long, very interesting and gets you into a really beautiful area. As you get near the top of the Trail you start crossing obvious slide paths. One at a time crossing those please. Don't hang about in the bigger slide paths when the expanse of the GOS is visible. Take pics and pay close attention to what's there...planning for the future is good. The run down the GOSST is a lot of fun too! Such a winner!

Happy Trails.

Please take note: The name of the gully is a clue to it's nature. There will be 10-18 inches of fresh on it with the top potentially wind loaded to a couple more additional feet. The risk of a human triggered slide could be considerable or higher. Make sure you have a good backup plan and the resolve to use it if the above conditions exist on Landslide.

Thanks RR!!! Appreciate the reply. Sounds like some good scouting can be done and be worth the trip. I'll have to talk to my buddies and see. It would be good to get over to the GOS too. I've scene a lot of pics and read a lot of reports about it. Looks like the weather is still uncertain, so maybe we'll be able to ski Tucks or Huntington afterall. We've been follow the avalanche center and weather closely over the next few days.

Sorry Burtonguy401, but we'll be traveling back to CT on Sunday so we won't be able to make a tour.
