So: Questionable skiing, immense effort, risk of injury and unsavory company. Should you go? Of course.
Not a bad article. Some formatting issues, but readable.

Agreed..readable. Wait till that writer gets the opportunity to shredd some pfluff in mid-February: A whole 'nother veiwpoint!

...and on a pitch that's steep, but no steeper than upper Starr at Stowe.
Is he serious? :skierpetrified:
That is just ridiculous and he needs to go in March or earlier
I just had to look and see the difference: Here are two maps that are of identical scale both topographically and laterally:
Tucks (http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=19&n=4903074&e=317234&s=25)
Stowe (http://www.topozone.com/map.asp?z=18&n=4933005&e=675193&s=25)
Where Starr is you can just make out the topo lines, at Tucks, they are a solid blur.
(I am PC challenged, if I were at home on my Mac I could've posted the images instead of just links :o )

He is definately understating the steepness. There is no comparison between upper upper Starr and Tucks.
I sense a bit of the blase, "I'm too cool a big mountain western skier to be really impressed with the icon of Eastern skiing" attitude. But he seems to come around in the second half of the article.

I agree. The writer trivializes what TR really is. It sounds like a bunny slope that gets steeper if you go higher. Maybe we should write a letter to the editor in response...including skilas' links.
I actually describe the ravine lower slopes as bunny slopes sometimes. I tell people that anyone can ski it, you just go as high as you want.
Of course it's not that simple... the problem is it's really not WORTH skiing it if your not going to go at least half way up... might as well stay home and ski your back yard if that's the case.

Actually in my experience the later you go the steeper it gets... really? I've always seen about the same conditions so I haven't noticed. Anyway, he might find snow instead of corn at least.
Wow....
The choice between corn and pow is a tough one for me..
I really enjoy a sweet corn run....

me too, but if I had to choose I would opt for ther pow. But this writer needs to ski Tucks in different conditions

Pretty disappointing article. And that stuff about steepness is sheer madness. Alright, it's ain't McConkey's at Whistler, or Solstice Couloir on Mt. Dana, but the terrain at Tucks should be regarded as respectably steep in anyone's book, even too-cool-for-you big mountain rippers.
Shifting gears, I'd have to say I prefer corn when I'm skiing corn and pow when I'm skiing pow. When skiing the one I've never caught myself wishing I was on the other....

It's definitely much steeper than anything I'VE ever skied back East... which includes all over Jay's face & Saddle. The only other thing I've skied that might come close to it is the East Wall or Upper East Wall at A-Basin, CO. This year my first time up on the lip at Tuck's I almost s##t myself because it was my first real steep descent on tele skis, and the day was too cold to corn up... After that initial run, however, tele skis are definitely my weapons of choice for the ravine.
As for snow, I've never actually skied Tucks in true powder, just frozen crust, good corn, and in-between, but I'd imagine that there are some times when you get really great powder conditions up there.

Except when you climb to the upper East Wall you suck wind like you've never sucked it before... :( Stepping up into the East Wall is pretty exausting too....
It's a pleasure to ride our low altitude TUX... :)

Thanks to DMC for supplying interactive map of tuckerman's. This is a great help for a first timer like myself. Now I know what I'm getting myself into. :skierpetrified:

Skiing TUX is a alot like the Palisades at Squaw on a spring day or Corbets Couloir at Jackson Hole, or even the cone at Big Sky. There is no comparison to anything else on the East. I don't know of any other slope in the east where you risk an 800' vertical fall into rocks or off cliffs bands.

The Stowe website advertises Starr at 37 degrees.
I find the following photo interesting, for reasons other than the very attractive subject. :)

Specifically, it was taken at the rocks immediately below the narrow part of the Chute, at the half-point of the bowl elevation. You can clearly see the profile of the slope behind Ski&Ride's shoulders. By my own protractor this is 39 degrees, and as everyone knows, the steepness goes up from there.

Tuckerman is much steeper than Starr ever will be. Sometimes Tux isn't as intimidating to the experienced skier because there aren't any moguls (lunch rocks after an ice storm?) as on Starr, but after reviewing the topo maps and known fact, Tux is proven to be steeper, rounder, and definately more exciting than Starr. Goat is the same boat...give me Hell's Woods at Jay Peak anytime.
When I first read "Suckerman's Ravine", I was actually on the way up to Stowe...almost got sick. When did he go, Spring break?!?!?!?!
For me it will always be Tuckerman. Hope to see some of you up there this season.
Good turns.

Sanchez,
I have definately skied moguls at tux, in the left gully & left chute, and on Hillmans. It was spring and they were awsome!

I love the moguls in Left Gully. They are fairly tall but widely spaced. Boarders and skiers thrive on LG moguls!

I think the snow pack movement and the way the weight sits must cause these little "slough" moguls. Another fine feature of the ravine that SKImag should have hit before writing the article. Never been up there too late in the Spring, I'll have to try out the new slalom skis on the bumps this year.

I Emailed the author and told him nicely he was off his rocker, and gave him the link to this thread. HAHA
