I'm considering going to Tuck's for the first time. Many years of talking. I suppose it's the prep that has stopped me. Alot of good info here. Dave's checklist is exactly what I was looking for. I would like to stay over and I understand there is a camp. $8 is in my price range http://timefortuckerman.com/ubb/smile.gif. Looking for some othere suggestions. I'm also looking for any info on current ski conditions.....etc to help me prep for my first trip. Anyone feel like hooking up and guiding a first timer?

I used to think it was something that "other people" do until I went for the first time. It is not like going to the moon as I always thought. Keep a hairy eye on the weather. Go to http://www.mountwashington.org/backcountry/index.html This is a good place to check for weather and snow. Also, check http://www.intellicast.com/Local/USLocalStd.asp?loc=usnhsr27&seg=LocalWeather&prodgrp=Forecasts&product=Forecast&prodnav=none for Tuckerman Ravine forecast. And of course, check here for the latest from these sicko Tucks addicts. You'll get to know who the Vets are.
A note on the shelters, on a good weekend they can go quick. They are 1st come, 1st serve and limited in #. There can be a line at 5:00am for lean-to spots. It always depends.
Most importantly, ENJOY IT!!
Rich

This board is very useful. I was thinking about heading up there within the next month for my first time. I'm rallying some boys to go but who knows who will come through. When are you heading up there??

I am thinking about goin either Saturday April 6th or April 13th depending on the snow conditions and weather. If these days are a bust it will be another Saturday. Probably not the 19th though due to the Inferno race held. From what I hear it gets pretty crowded.
Have four non skiers who say the want to go up. Will have to see how many actually make it.

No Rich I haven't but reading some of Dave's (host) comments on it and looking at the pictures here, I would agree with you.
Like someone said though, I bet it is a hell of a party.

I’m also new to Tucks mid season. I’ve done it in the spring for the past few years but this is the first season that I’m getting geared up to really start exploring the backcountry. Six of my friends that are also getting into it which is a great size group to start out with .. I’ve also been skiing with all of these guys for a few years now and it’s really exciting exploring new terrain. We just finished an avalanche / guided backcountry tour with Steve from Bartlett backcountry adventures. http://www.bartlettadventures.com/ I can’t recommend him highly enough. He was a good instructor and gave us great information. I walked away with a feeling of how much I don’t know to really travel safely in avalanche terrain.
When I’m in the area I stay at a ski club in Bartlett NH. It’s super cheap and really convenient. Guests can stay for $20 a night and our season rates are really low and allow me to get up there almost every weekend. It’s a bit of a party crowd so sometimes it’s tough to go to bed early but there is no place I’m happier. I’ll take a beer from the draft system, fireplace, bed and a bunch of friends any day of the week. I’ve been a member for 3 years now and all the frequent members all seem like part of a family. If you want to check out our web site its http://www.brettl.org/. I’d be more than happy to sponsor anyone from this board.
I have some great pics of the debris field from last weekend. As soon as I get them from my friend I’ll post them to the pic’s site. :)

Rich
We were up on reaceday last year.... While we were pumping water at the Hojos bridge the racers were running by...
It didn't seem all that crowded that day.. Normal crowd but not a lot of people were there JUST for the race...
Although Hillmans was taken up with a race course... But Hillmans scks on the weekends - too crowded..
We rode the Upper Snowfields and the Chute in the bowl that day - so we spent most of the day away from Hojos...

He was on his AT gear. He had the new Naxo binding. It was my first chance to see them up close. I’m on the Fritschi Freeride and I like them but if I had to make the purchase again I think I would go with the Naxo.
