View Full Version : T4T Members: Middle to Upper Class People?

Ran into a blog by 'Will' who visited T4T on Nov 5/03. You'll get a kick out of his analysis of the troups who frequent T4T. Interesting comments include:
"The website appears to appeal to middle to upper class people that live in the New England area."
Hey! What about Bannick, Franko,TenSeven and me!
"The site is mainly addressing the people who actually get to ski the ravine on a regular basis. This makes people who arent local skiers feel unwanted, and it makes people who dont even ski feel even more unwanted."
How can anyone feel unwanted when we offer  :beermug: :margarita: :kc: and :mandm: . Mind you I don't feel so wanted at the Antique Frog Legs Collectors website... heck I don't even eat frogs legs, let alone collect them.
"The people that run and use this website do not use much Internet lingo."
LOL. Too funny! Not using Internet lingo is a 'good thing' (sorry Martha). Maybe if your on a web building site we might have a problem, but hey... Tuckerites (lingo) like to ski Tucks more than parse headers or write CGI.
"In review, the target reader of the site is a young and athletic people from New England with enough money to buy skis."
Actually we never ask that you buy skis, or even own a pair. I think most of us have a purpose and function in life, other than buying skis.. more like riding skis (or boards).
"The website embodies something so fun that it makes people who havent ever shared that
experience only wonder what it could be like.
"
Thats better Will!
Check out Will's electronic community (http://group1blog.blogspot.com/) for his full analysis/review. His blog is a bit more than half way down the page.

After reading poor Will's blog, I wondered why on earth would anyone perform such an analysis of T4T.
The answer? Class credit.
Will is participating in an english course at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. (Check out his prof's course website (http://www.piano1101.blogspot.com/).)
Perhaps this explains the academic orientation of young Will's report. He does raise some good points, though... such as: if you don't backcountry ski in New England/Eastern Canada, don't come to New England, don't backcountry ski, don't ski or ride at all, don't speak any English, or don't even use the WWW, you won't get much out of T4T.

Hmmm...I never knew that I wasn't supposed to be here. Why didn't you young, athletic, white males tell me?
I find some of his vocab interesting, such as, "This is a website that I have monitored for some time." There's a dead giveaway. First of all he "monitored". To become a part of this community, you need to get involved. That doesn't mean that you even have to own skis, just the love for TR.
Secondly, "for some time", is a really non-committal statement. If he had monitored for any significant length of time, he would have said so. "I have monitored this website for a year ." I don't think Will gave it very much time.
He completely missed the :chicken: factor.
I give Will's book report a D.
Bannick
01-06-2004, 09:51 AM
heck...I don't ski and I haven't been to TR yet.
Oh great...guess you elitist, american skiing types are going to black ball me now.
Oh yeah...I am an architect...and contrary to the Brady Bunch there is no way I could afford 6 kids a maid, a dog and a hnice house in a nice neighbourhood there is now way I could be considered upper class. I won't get into the fact the 6 kids had to share one bathroom....
Don't sweat that Bannick...
Gee, I'm over fifty, can't buy new gear unless it's second or third hand used, and still so country that a high point in my life was seeing Lorretta Lynn at the Indian Ranch.
I invite folks to check it out here at T4T and keep trying to get folks out for some backcountry style....even holding BBQ way the hell out in the woods!
Exclusive...NOT! I think this site is about the joy of skiing/bording, tubing and general joi de vie in the winter. Tucks is just a very happy coincidence.

...and can someone explain the term "blog" and/or "blogging" to me. Seriously.

etymology of blog (http://www.jacobsen.no/anders/blog/archives/2002/07/29/the_etymology_of_blog.html)
In short, it's short for "web log". People transcribe their whole lives (so they think) onto the web. News stories, personal anecdotes, and all their posts on various forums are stored centrally on their blog.
P.S. I may be a fraction of RR's age, but I would get a kick out of having seen Ms. Lynn as well. At least she recorded a lot of material for us newcomers to appreciate!
I keep hearing that we are "exclusive" or "elitist" or something, and I can't figure out why.
Other than the whole "Frankontour 9-11 misunderstandings," we've never even had a real flame war here.
As a moderator, I've only had to edit like 2 posts, and it was becuase of swearing and I didn't do more than swap 2 letters on those.
I even TRIED to instigate a whole boarder/skier action the other day and the people I AIMED that flame invitation at responded with just a short "You're nuts."
As far as "Mostly Male" or "All White" comments, I suggest he do a little sampling of the skiing community at large before labeling us like that. I think on those stats alone we are right in the middle. That there are no "non white" people on our board is just a silly statistic... I don't think anyone here would dream of excluding on that basis.
The only thing we exclude people for is not posting. i.e. the Tony Matt Club. You want in, talk to us - even if we disagree completely, you'll get in eventually.

...and can someone explain the term "blog" and/or "blogging" to me. Seriously. blog
Definition
A frequent, chronological publication of personal thoughts and Web links.
A blog is often a mixture of what is happening in a person's life and what is happening on the Web, a kind of hybrid diary/guide site, although there are as many unique types of blogs as there are people.
People maintained blogs long before the term was coined, but the trend gained momentum with the introduction of automated published systems, most notably Blogger at blogger.com. Thousands of people use services such as Blogger to simplify and accelerate the publishing process.
Blogs are alternatively called web logs or weblogs. However, "blog" seems less likely to cause confusion, as "web log" can also mean a server's log files.
I'd compare it to an online diary for the purpose of sharing it with others.
Some people actually spend a lot of time reading other peoples blogs which I find interesting. No I do not frequent blog sites myself. I prefer Reality TV to reading blogs.
Your turn :drphil:

Interesting analysis. I'd have to say he is mostly correct on owning your own equipment. That or having very forgiving friends (or paying the damage in rentals). And as for being a guy site, its true too: Skimum, Ski&Ride, Plummet and I are erally guys in drag!

Yikes! Uppermiddle! Wow. Mostly male, maybe, mostly white, maybe too, but how would he know, only like a dozen of us have sufficiently revealing avatars, 10-7 might actually be a cup of coffee for all we know {revelation - maybe he is Joe, the other God of Snow}, and Jolly J probably has a really hard time finding clothes.
"young and athletic" I take offense! I have never been athletic!

It appears that it is still too early in the ski season for much to be going on in New England. Most people are still complaining that they haven't even seen snow yet since the spring melt. As a guage for just how hardcore these skiers are, several of them either skied or were planning to ski in their back yards when the first snow accumulated on the ground. Most of them are about ready to pee in their pants unless they get to see their first action of the year very soonThis Will guy is a hoot

Didn't read his blog, but from our collective analysis of his analysis, it sounds like he missed what should have been Exhibit A in his elitism and monied-class charges against us: that we all own or have access to a computer, and that we have the knowledge and interest to use the computer in a fairly sophisticated way (remember there are still people out there who don't know how to turn these things on!).
Valid points, but total crap. I think backcountry skiing is a great socio-economic equalizer. The dollars in your pocket don't seem to matter too much when it comes to how well you rip it up, or how much fun you're having out there....

The dollars in your pocket don't seem to matter too much when it comes to how well you rip it up, or how much fun you're having out there.... Very true. This Will person is definately close-minded, at best. I can't afford new equipment. Most of my gear is used, & the only new stuff I have is because I work in the industry & get a sweet discount. I grew up using my babysitting money to go skiing with friends. My mother didn't ski at the time, nor could she afford to.
I won't even go there about his comments referring to lack of internet lingo. That's just pointless.
As for making people who aren't local skiers feel unwelcome... idiot! I got to meet Franko, Mumster, Skidude, all from outside NE. Not to mention the open invites to :kc: . Since I've found this site, I've never felt more welcome.
This site rocks for all!

I think backcountry skiing is a great socio-economic equalizer. Excellent point... Although I've seen some "posers" up there with some really nice gear that I can't afford. Mostly jackets and stuff..
But when it really comes down to it... Were all pretty danm equal when were traversing from the Right Gully to the Chute across the Headwall..

Do I feel unwanted???? Young?? Athletic?? Upper Class?? No, not anymore, not quite and NOT.
I am not local, have only been to :tucks: once, and only have a relatively few posts, but responses have always been welcoming. It is a little difficult to break into the core posters :skicdave: :ma: :skilas: :skistooge: :mumster: :jollyj: :kc: :disinfo: world, but that is from lack of posting, not because I feel unwelcome. There are invites galore all without exclusion, just wish I could make them.

Since the population of New England is overwhelmingly white, the site relates best to whites. Does this guy know that this site is hosted in Canada? And run by a Canadian??? Is Canada overwhelmingly white?
I watched Degrassi High last night and saw a bunch of non-white people.

Is Canada overwhelmingly white? Judging by our Canadien reps I'd say yes. Mcgrath and Bannick don't sound particulary ethnic. However, while in Toronto recently, noticed an extremely large Asian population.

My thoughts.
1. Don't live in N.E.
2. Only went to the Ravine once and feel very welcome :cooldog:
3. I try to tone the lingo down on this site just because its all old dudes **ducks** compaired to the other boards I'm on.
4. Ummm Same as number 1.
5. Maybe he should try it.

I think the biggest, I mean largest... I mean the worst problem with skiing naked on a cold day is the significant shrinkage.
Isn't it great how so many threads come around to the naked guy?
Does it still count as naked if you have a helmet? (On your head... your big head - I mean the head with eyes... you know the one you think with... that is, the one on top of your shoulders)

BTW - Is there ever any nude skiing in Warren's films? I don't recall seeing any, but maybe my eyes were just glued to all the mountains and snow.
