SPEAKING OF PACK WEIGHT AND BOXED WINE ECT...... IT SO HAPPENS THAT OUR FRIEND ELWOOD HAS A LOG OF OATMEAL STOUT HOME BREW READY FOR THE TASTING! MY DELEMMA IS HOW TO HIKE IT IN? IT PROBABLY WEIGHS IN AROUND 35-45LBS AND WE ARE SPENDING THE NIGHT. SO WE ARE PRETTY GEARED UP,AND WEIGHTED DOWN. WHAT I WAS WONDERING WAS WOULD IT BE POSSIBLE TO DRAG UP A SLED, OR IF SOMEONE OUT THERE WAS GOING UP FOR THE DAY AND WOULD LIKE TO JOIN IN AND MULE IT UP? WE ARE TALKING ABOUT FREE HOME BREW HERE, AND THE GLORY OF A KEGGER AT THE TOP. SO THE OFFER IS OUT THERE, ANY TAKERS????

While still slightly on topic...
The best method for hauling up the big kegs is on a back board. I've seen it done. The guy looked quite confortable especially since his friends had split up his gear amongst themselves to haul up.
On my packcalc - the KEG is a LOG. 22 pounds, almost the same as Skiis+Boots. (No Co2, pump before you leave, and then open the Co2 side and pour straight out) The plan was to bring my keg of homebrew one time. That and a pound of bacon. That plan never happened.
Barring that, get the biggest Nalegene bottle (http://www.nalgene-outdoor.com/store/subcategory.asp?categorysubcategorycode=27) you can and pour it from the keg in the car at the trail head. Or, use the smaller nalgene bottles, and everyone bring a couple. Brew will last a couple days in a good resealable bottle. And if it goes flat: I bet you won't care.

   You all are missing the easiest idea to get the beer  up...Leave it in the car with the window cracked, get about a 100 gallon pressure tank, bring about 2 and a half miles of nice clean tubing, hook one end of the tubing to the keg  (don't forget to turn on the pressure valve at the tank!!!), attach the spigot to the other end, and hike! Simply unroll the tubing as ya go!!! Simple as that! Let me know if anyone ever attempts something like this as I will PAY to watch someone unroll 2 and a half miles of tubing!!! (Let alone see the gargantuan that is enlisted to carry it!) On the OTHER hand...someone could drive it to the summit now that the road is open, hook a nice weight on to the spigot end and just THROW it over the headwall...Hmmmm. This sounds a little easier. OK, nuff for this train of thought. Have fun, be safe. Al
I acutally designed an R/C plane to carry a few beers. Plan was to have one joey in the parking lot load it up, take off, get to altitude, aim it towards the ravine and turn his transmitter off. then someone up in the ravine would wait until they saw it, turn their transmitter on, land, remvoe beers, and send it back in similar manner.
Turns out it's a lot of weight for fuel and you gambling about $200 worth of airplane in the process.
But to say you did it... therein lies the reward. That and the beer.
M@ :ducttape:
Guys, all this high tech stuff is not the answer. A plain old fashioned helium filled weather balloon will cut the effective carry weight of the case/keg by quite a lot. ;) If there's two balloons, one could bring along the barBQ and the requisite propane. :happyhiker:
Getting to HoJo's with that rig would be fine. Getting from there to the ravine would be tough. The balloons wouldn't last another 50 meters in the trees by the much narrower trail. :unhappyhiker:

Hey Doc and Elwood,
Do you have radios? I'll be on T4T (9 14) or on 8 10. We had planned on 8:00 - 8:30 to be ready to hit the trail head. I have your cel number so hopefully one way or another... we'll be arriving in a new VW Jetta, silver, MA plates, red Mad River Glen bumper sticker, roof rack with one pair skis and one teleboard.

Take it up the train and run it down the snow fields on a Cascade Model 100! That would be a ride.
Carrying it up would a lot easier if we could settle for Light beer
