Looking for some help with a future hike.
On the USGS topo map you can see the "Old Railroad Grade" that goes from Mt Clinton Rd near Edmonds Path up to the Cog's Base Station and Ammo Ravine trail. The AMC has no info on this trail and it's not on their maps. It's 2 miles long and would allow me to avoid walking on the road. Does anyone know if this trail/railroad bed is still hike-able.
Thanks

No doubt you'll take the Ammo Ext trail (between the newer Hiker parking and the original Ammo Tr.) when you get to it.
I have been on what looked like an old railbed just close to the Cog Base pkg lot. It's obvious, but daylight and fresh muscles would be required as in that area it is grown in and blowdowns are all around.
I'd bring an 8" folding saw to nip the odd limb of blowdowns that fully block the way. My pack of choice would have no external straps or mesh. A SealLine 35L Boundary Bag, in Green, would be my top choice as a daypack for this and any other bushwhacking. A folded z-rest would be adequet internal support.

no idea on the old railroad bed...probably completely grown in though. however, mt clinton road, as of a few days ago, was still closed. LOTS of blowdowns on the road that the forest service hasn't chopped through, and they've got plenty of other problems to deal with.

Thanks for the info. AMC didn't have any info on this trail.
Good to know about Mt Clinton Rd!! Thanks
Got a beater bicycle? Got a longish lock cable or chain & padlock? Park as you plan to, ride to the cog, lock up the wheels discretely in the woods and tally ho!
Once back at the car, drive back to the cog and retrieve the bike. Probably saves hike time of two hours or more if the railbed schwack is only half-bad and a maybe an hour compared to walking the Mt Clinton Rd etc.
