I'm thinking about going to Tucks next weekend. I've never skied it. Can you still skin up the Sherburn Trail? or is it better to hike up to the base? How early should I leave from the trailhead?

The snowfall this w/e will probably be hanging on for a few days and that might be enough for skinning up next w/e. I wouldn't count on it.

The Sherby was closed below the third lowest crossover last Sunday and the decision to close it at the fourth was being mentioned as likely. The snow on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail is very dirty for a ways above the third crossover, but if you really had to skin up some part of the way, the upper half of either the Sherby or the TRT would support it.

Better to go up using the waterproof and breathable (W/B) light hikers or (W/B) sneakers and carry some dry socks for the inevitable hike out below the fourth crossover. Besides, getting your feet out of the ski boots while you are padding about the sheleter or at HoJo's is real bliss. Bring a little extra fuel to aid in drying the liners, or at least for warming them up in the morning....but be careful how you do that

I have hiked up in my tele boots until I could start skinning and it wasn't bad going up. I will henceforth carry the sneakers for the hike out part.

Have a great trip!
