Renting Winter Gear

Is there any place near Pinkham Notch where you can rent Crampons and things like that? I would only need them for one trip a year up to Tucks (Max.). Is it more worth it just to break down and by a set? I might go up a bit early and want them "just in case" (can't use what you don't bring).

Crampons are a bonus if you have them... however it depends on when you go. If its later in the season.. ie mid April or later you won't get much use of them hiking up to the bowl on rocks... Hiking above for sure, unless you are just climbing up to the lip in your ski boots.

Had a great deal at EMS last year.. my wife bought a pair of used crampons at EMS in North Conway... mind you they were both for left feet LOL. EMS 'might' rent them, not sure.... best to check with them. Then again IME rents crampsons (across the street from EMS) for $10 or so... see http://www.ime-usa.com/catalog/rentals/index.html .

You can buy them new for around $99 US usually. IME might have some used rentals for sale.. check it out.
