Chuck Boyd will be the Instructor for the below. Chuck has extensive climbingmountain experience from the CT Traprock crags to first ascents in the Himalaya. This is a 3 day course per the AIARE/AAA guidelines and you will learn a lot - HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

March 19-21, 2010
Whiteface Mountain, New York

Have you ever been in the backcountry?

Have you ever wondered if the snow on the slope you are about to ski, or climb, is stable?

Do you want to learn how to make critical decisions in avalanche terrain, use an avalanche beacon in a companion rescue, or discover how the snowpack changed throughout the season?

If you have answered “yes” to any of these questions, Level I Avalanche may be a course for you. On the first day in the classroom, you are introduced to the Avalanche Triangle, the how’s and means of avalanche formation, important snow and avalanche terminology, as well as trip planning, Companion, and organized rescue operations. On the second day, we go outside, at Whiteface to work hands-on with our new knowledge, experiencing avalanche terrain in a new light. On the third day we go tour into the slides, at Whiteface and participate in an avalanche rescue scenario.

Prerequisites for the course include physically fit conditioning, and equipment to spend a full day in the outdoor winter environment. Remember, it does get cold in March! You must be able to ski black diamond terrain!

If you have any questions, please call or e-mail Chuck Boyd at: (860) 508-5273, or chucklin2@gmail.com

Course Fee: Fee is $150 for NSP members and $200 for non members.

Deadline is March 15, 2010.
