View Full Version : Numbers (days/ft)
I was wondering how you keep track of the whole "Vertical Feet" per year thing. I was thinking a spreadsheet with each lift I've been on and the number of times I was on it. The hard part is keeping track during the day.
SkiMum mentioned a million feet as a goal - I'm trying to figure out how much skiing that is this year. How do you keep track Mumster?
I suppose another interesting number would be VerticalFt/Days - add up your feet for the year, and divide by the days to give you a rough idea of how much you ski on an average day.

That would be 491 runs on MRG's Single chair + 1 run on the practice slope, or, for greater enjoyment, 492 runs on the single chair.
At 10 runs per day, that would require 50 days of skiing

there are altimiter watches that keep track of vertical for you and could proly give you an indication of cumulative vert and vert/day etc. I have been wanting one for years.
I figure I did at least a couple of million feet in 125 days when I worked out at W/B.
I need to move back to the mountains to keep a detailed record of vert. I would need about 70 days of 25 plus runs per day to get a million at my local hill here in Toronto.

I bought an altimeter to keep track of this. And, would be happy to divide by # of days to determine how much I ski per day. :skiplow:
Last year I counted days, but that's hard - what's a day? - Is night skiing a day? Are a few runs if I'm at a race watching a child a day? So I thought vertical feet would better reflect the total ski experience.
From M@'s equation, I could then calculate the average day.
How to best count :skiplow: ? ....what a delightful problem to deal with... :D

AVOCET BABY! they do it all...

Most runs are between 1000-1500 of vert so a million would be between 1000 and 667 runs. Somewhere in that range...20 runs a day is pushing it but do-able. So around 35 days to 50 days for mere mortals...Maybe not a good idea for bump skiers though - crunch all you want...

These altimeters don't count anything less than a 10 foot change, so you won't get more feet by going up and down over moguls.

"How many people messuare there vert feet? "
I'm going to start this year. That's an excellent idea and an excellent point that some days are shorter than others. I think half a million is a more realistic goal for me, considering my location. :(
How bout culminating in a 10,000 vert day on washington?
Now for the question, do dreams count, if so I'm already on 1/4 mil! :happyhiker:

I don't usually like to keep too many stats... some people like that more than others (anyone else read "Good Morning Midnight"? It sounds like Guy Waterman was quite the statistican). Still, this year I have started an Excel spreadsheet on my desktop that keeps track of:
Day #, Date, Resort/BC, Where, & Tele/Alpine.
I think vertical feet would require too much calculation, and it's more of a doing something "for the record", or at least in my mind. As for what constitutes a "day", that varies infinitely from person to person, but I consider it a day if:
A)I have fun
B)Spend at least 2 hours out there (that can include the skin/hike up as well as the run(s) down).
So currently, my spreadsheet shows me at 2 days this year, even though each was only for a couple hours, and my run total is at 4...
I had enough FUN on both of those occasions though, for an entire month of summer...

Well this weekend before I went to hunter I pulled out my Alta Altimeter and it was fried. I hit a button and it went blank adn then went back. It did this a few times and then all the numbers said 8 and has been doing that for like 2 days now. Anyway I am going to see if it can be fixed. I would say away from this brand
