View Full Version : rent avi equipment?
Hi,
We're pretty psyched to make it up there this weekend but one or two people in our group do not have a transceiver, probe or shovel. After reading other posts it seems it's not all that uncommon to not have them around this time of season. But since it looks like it's not quite spring there yet, maybe we should try to get some. Is there anywhere around town that rents equipment or does anyone know of anywhere else that does?

Gotta agree w/beanmess in the referenced thread. Wearing a transceiver, but not being VERY familiar with it means you're simply wearing a body recovery tool. Just wearing one doesn't automatically mean knowing how to use it.
Do you/they know how to assess risk levels (beyond looking at the board)? Do your buds know how to use a probe? Do they know how to do a pinpoint search? Have they taken any avy classes? How long can you hold your breath?
Not dissing you or your friends, but just an observation. I'm Level II certified (Level III next year) at this point and I'll tell ya, the more I learn, the less I know. I also travel with people that I trust with my life, because I might have to....
Hi guys,
Thanks for the help skicdave. I heard there was a place in N. conway also but wasn't sure of the town or name. I also agree with billr and beamness. i probably wouldn't want that on my shoulders either but as a skier welcome the rental until i could buy it all.
no dissing taken billr. I would be a little nervous if i saw a post like this too but i figured better ask than just go without. btw, what time do the lifts open? jk. We're ok but not trained... stay in groups... try to hike up where we're going to ski down and keep the better ones in front and back. Here's a shot of us checking the conditions off the teton pass in jackson.

as luck (or unluck) would have it, we won't be making it up there this weekend afterall and i for one and really dissapointed since it looked like the headwall is still skiable. i've been wanting to ski it for years now. it will just have to wait until next year... or maybe next weekend if all goes well.
Thanks again for your help. Have fun this weekend if you make it out anywhere.
