Rather than going out west this year, we are considering a trip to Whiteface,N.Y. Bearing in mind that I am mostly a one-legged groomer cruiser, I would appreciate any comments that T4T- ers could offer. Thanks!!

Without stating the obvious there is no comparison between the Adirondacks and the Rockies. With that being said I would suggest several alternatives to Whiteface under the assumption you either (a) don't have a season pass to any other mountain or (b) don't normally ski mountains north of southern NY/VT/NH. If you are planning on going to Whiteface I would definitely suggest you try out several alternatives in Northern Vermont. Whiteface can be great when the conditions are great, otherwise its just plain "iceface." You should consider Stowe, Smugglers Notch or Sugarbush in Northern Vermont. All three resorts get more snow and better snow than Whiteface. Similarly they have comparable vert to Whiteface, maybe not as much but very close. Depending on where you live they may be the same distance as well. Hope this helps.

Whiteface has 3166 lift-served vf. Whats stowe, 2300? Killington? Dont they say 3000vf, but really only about 2k is skiable? I think Sugarbush is closest w/ 2600 or somthing...
Anyhoo, WF has more skiable vertical, but you are very accurate that is can be more icy than a hockey rink. But when its good its good. Lots of chill terrain there if you want it too...even from the summit you can take blues all the way down.
Placid is a great town too.

Very good point!
Serious question...was there a large fire on Sugarloaf that burned off the trees? Then they never grew back due to the weather and thats why its "above treeline"? I know that happened alot in the Daks to peaks well below "Natural" treeline...
Sugarloaf is around 4200ft right? Isnt tru treeline around 5000ft?

ya, in mass. treeline that far north in maine is right around 4k. no fire on the loaf. the latitude and weather keep it tree free.
id say close to 500 vert above treeline on the front side

Sugarbush has 2,600 but it sucks so don't go there. ;)
Smuggs has 2,610.
Placid is a great town too.
It depends on who you ask. The police are a bunch of dic%heads, and that town won't see a penny more of my money after practically anally raping me and everyone who attended the last snoe.down event there.

BLASPHEMY! How dare you diss my happy place -- and, my eventual resting place?!! My ski buddies are under strict order to deliver my ashes to Paradise whenever it is my soul leaves this earth (I figure it's the only way I'M ever gonna get to Paradise!) ;)
So, Elwood, are you going to Redbones before the WM film next month so I can talk some sense into you (or slap you upside the head)? :D
Gimpy, I must admit, I don't typically do cruisers at Sugarbush, so I don't know that it will appropriately suit your needs. Have you considered Burke Mountain, just north of St. Johnsbury? Good steeps, good snow, slow lift (but rarely liftlines).

I've been above tree line @3k and not @4k just the way it works. sugarloaf summit not above treeline due to fire, but like washington it's a rock pile with some shrubs. anyways if you haven't been their gimpy then you should, great options from the summit for all abilities and a great little village at the base, can't comment on whiteface..

You're new here, so try and follow along.
Sugarbush sucks and no one should go there ;) So do the Daks, NH, and Maine. Everyone should stay in Southern VT, but not Magic, that place sucks too. ;)

Ahhh, I understand! Forget about what I said about Burke; that place sucks. Go to Killington or Stratton! (Thanks for setting me straight. Clearly I need to read more T4T before acting on knee-jerk reactions.)

Ok, I know I'm gonna be subject to public ridicule for this, but Tremblant, 2 hours north of Montreal is a nice place with good terrain and an international (French) feel. The terrain is well manicured groomers with moderate challenge if you want it and some nice wide glades. I took the Fam when my oldest (of 4 kids) was 12 and we all had a great time. The place is run by IntraWest (Whistler) who definitley know how to run a resort and go the extra mile. Nightlife and Reastaurants are very good and staying right in the village at the base is well worth it. If the exchange is good, that's a bonus. Just don't go when there are any school vacations, and I'd do it in Feb -April because the January temps can be oppressive. They don't get boatloads of snow, but it keeps because of the temps. I origionally found the place because the Mad River Valley was without snow in the early 90's and we kept going north.
By the way VTdiamondskier, my ashes will also be in the Valley; on The Lynx at MRG, inbetween the birches on a 2 foot powder day. (deep breath x2)
peace,
Geo

I was pretty sure that I could spark a debate with my question! The reason we are considering Whiteface is that my brother in law has access to a dirt cheap time share there. We have also considered Tremblant and Stowe. Okemo is a definite for a mid week ski/stay. We have had a couple of great trips to Sugarloaf tho the wind shut-downs can be frustrating. It may be ridiculed as a tourist mountain, but last year at Breckenridge, I did my best skiing ever. For me it was better than our previous trips to Whistler or SLC. It's all about the snow and the skiing. I have little interest in the night life, as I am usually too exhausted to go out. Plus, oh yeah, I got sober 14 years ago,so the late nite bar thing is a bit tedious.
