new for this season biggest glades (by chair lift) in the east 44 acres Casablanca (glade) between Muleskinner and Black Beauty at saddleback. That's wide with alot of quality terrain. (if you haven't been there check out web site for map) Turning all that terrain into glades instead of open slopes that get scoured their by the winds was brilliant, can't wait to check'em out:)

Such nice terrain for yet more of Saddleback's awe inspiring steep glades.

It's going to be deep in there!

I bought a season pass at Kirkwood this year for $239 and I will be out in Tahoe for 3+ weeks in February/March. The good folks at Saddleback are offering day tickets for $35 to anyone with another area pass. I have not been up to Saddleback since the Berry's purchased the mountain. Anyone know of cheap places to stay nearby?

We always used to stay at the Rangely Inn so we could get hammered in the bar and not have to drive ;) Only downside is it's very popular with snowmobilers, so you WILL be waking early to get first tracks! Now I make the drive from my place in Norway...

Rangely Saddleback Inn (http://www.rangeleysaddlebackinn.com/) have a Stay and Ski deal with the mountain. We used it last year. Also popular with the sledders. The morning air outside in the parking lot is pungent with the aroma of warming sled engines.

Hot tub, pool...

It was pretty nice. They have some noshies for continental brekkers...but we always tanked up at the mountain...breakfast food at the mountain is pretty damned good!

Here's the lodging page (http://www.saddlebackmaine.com/winter/nearby_lodging.php) at Saddleback Mountains site.

That must have taken ALOT of birdwatching!

That must have taken ALOT of birdwatching!Folks were in there years ago and since. Staff and locals know the Doctor wants a lift over there so they pushed for trees only.

Here's hoping that's how it stays when they finally put in the lift.

Edited to add....
The Philosopher used to be an instructor up there and reports that immigrant labor was used to cut and recut their two previously opened/restored glades. Sadly the cutting crew left stumps two feet+ high in those two glades. I walked them in the summer a few years ago...not a pretty sight!

If they used the same crews again the same need for base will delay opening and hasten closing the new glades...that is, unless they cut to leave shorter stumps.

Thanks for the suggestions. Short drive/pool and hot tub/ staying by the Lake all sound good. I know in Rangeley snowmobiles are number one. I don't mind them so much in the morning it is more the racket at night...
That glade sure does add to the number of untracked lines the day after a storm. :)

$225 weekend night and $175 midweek for the cottages. Motel was closer at $85. Does charm work to drastically discount rack rates or have they gone up?

Yep, scoured by wind indeed. I drove up and crashed in the car (see avatar)in the upper parking lot (the official amount was 18 inches) , the main chair was on wind hold all day. But the pow was worth the walk up from the top of the t-bar. A few days later there were still stashes in the glades; however trails like the Professor were sheets of glass. Casablanca indeed.

Yes you can sleep in the parking lot in a Saturn, but it isnt pretty.... :teardrop:

there's a certain upper mountain shack with heat, woodstove, radio and killer views. 1200 vert skin and a free place to stay. out b4 patrol for freshies, ski all day, skin back up at night and repeat. i do it at the loaf too.

think out side of the box. my teachers always hated it, but who's laughing now?:D

maybe they went up in price. being that it's maine and i usually only ski there or the loaf in april, there's always room to dikkah. i usually walk in with a big red dot on my forehead and get all middle eastern on their a$$es. if it's 10 at night and a cabin is empty in april, they'll take 100 bux or 50 for a room.

more trees falling in the "pine tree cutting state"
riv=blind ambition from 15 acres to 75 acres of glades

Birch Groves are my absolute favorites for East Coast Tree Skiing!

Imagine if every ski area thinned out the trees between trails. Like a tightish glade, it would hold snow for so long and get lots of accumulation because there's no wind in the trees.

Come on Ben... that would make TOO much sense! You know that management simply cannot function that way! :p

Wondering if anyone can help compare the sidecountry and expansion at Sugarloaf to this stuff at Saddleback - been to Saddle a few times but snow coverage wasn't great - that new quad made for some quick laps though

casa & other glades @ s.b. are all within the resort, basically you will run into another trail @ some point. s.b.'s glades on a whole are a little steeper and tighter than majority of loaf's glades.. Loaf's brackett basin is side-country, eventually u need to come back to skiers left to get back in the resort.. my assessment, last year brackett basin was a bigger badder version of can't dog glade. With the additional acreage this year, it should have more of a side-country feel.. loaf's brackett basin is much bigger than s.b.'s glades and more birches 2.. have fun, u should love s.loaf or s.back trees esp. when fresh!
