Great video. Tounge in cheek, yet informative. I think I could use a pair of AT skis....
I've been thinking AT, that movie might have clinched it. It sounds like a such a nice combination.

Can you leave the heel free to do tele turns too?

I don't think an AT binding would last long doing tele turns on it. AT is definitely a great way to go. For me, it took sometime to adjust to the lighter weight of my AT setup.

I like watching people throw poles.....

Can you leave the heel free to do tele turns too? It can be done -- I've seen it even done gracefully -- but for most mere mortals trying it, you'll learn through the pain of a wicked fall (with a large pack on) that it just doesn't work so well. Also, it's not what the gear is designed to do, so I'd worry that you risk binding breakage in the backcountry, which would big-time suck.
You can of course make p-turns with the heel unlocked (just watch the fore-aft balance!). Real drawback there is not the unlocked heel but that you're wearing skins, and turing skis that have skins attached is sometimes a real dicey proposition. Plus it ruins the skins....
I confess...I lock my heel. But skinning on AT gear is so easy. For now I'm using my inbounds boots, but they are so heavy!
I have tried my mountaineering boots with the AT binders at Tucks...not pretty. Like, it worked and all, but like, dudes, and dudettes, it was, like way squirilly. What's worse...I'm still on leather tele boots. Like, they have, like plastic cuffs and all. But like, driving a deep edge is like so not happening.

Rob, Have you tried AT specific boots? I have been looking and there are a number of models that span the gamut from mountaineering boot to almost downhill race.
I have been loking at AT gear for a while and I'm just about to break down. Naxo binding, Volkl Mountain, and ????? boot
I've often thought about using mountainering boots for snowboarding... Usually when my toes start hurting from leading climbs and kicking steps...
Lazer by Scarpa is way popular all over Europe. For the way you kick'em, Denali's also by Scarpa look like the way to go. Lazer=3buckle, Denali=4Buckle, both with power strap.
Garmont makes a new 4Buckle offering with the G-fit option, probably very sweet. Their 3Buckle G-Light is flatout light, under 5.5lbs, probably not for ripping in Bear Brook or South Bowl and such like.
Lowas descended Everest, so I quess their top models in the Struktura line would be a nice demo.

I got the denali xt's and like them a bunch. Supposedly garmont makes one that is super light, yet stiff.
