Although updating vBulletin is an option, which might have a better captcha... I don't have the time.
Luckily spam bots are REAL dumb, and they really don't know a thing about the site. So anyways, I have modified the registration to ask a question, only a human with a bit of sense would get... which will throw them off. This method has worked for me on another forum I run.
Hopefully that takes care of the spam.
