and here is my response!
ITs interesting, we were with our crew at tucks not too long ago, and the presence of beer kegs, and drugs and STUPID people is the combination of what makes tucks great and DANGEROUS, moronic people who come to the mt washington range THINK they are "All that" well one day they will end up buried under 4 feet of their "all that" mountain
Mt washington or ANY ski area or BC is NO PLACE to become stupid, and since the majority of "tourists" that cheer for these people come from brain dead drug induced hazey comas well that should explain it. They should put a gate by tucks (INTELIGENCE REQUIRED TO ENTER)
FYI: the people we bunked with that weekend were drunk and high, and STILL TEN TIMES smarter then the skiers and boarders in these videos, those people were BC all the way, true mountain people but not IGNORANT to the deadly surroundings
If i EVER saw this i would have personally SLAPPED that guy with my skis in the hopes i could knock some sense into him, people think tucks and skiing is a game, ITS NOT
nothing you could say could convince me of otherwise, these people are why america is the way it is, and why places like tucks continue to vanish from public use, they need to be aware, they need to have the gear and know how to use it.
Have fun, stay safe, and STAY SMART at all times up there!

I hate to sound insulting or almighty, but common sense is whats needed to walk away from tucks with a happy ending, too many people can HIKE to the tucks bowl and suddenly they are "backcountry" skiers, lol
I saw some amazing stuff while visiting, but when the storm blew in as it usually does, i saw lots of tucks veterans using sense themselves as well
Helmans highway put me in the place quite fast when i went sliding on boiler plate for a thousand feet, and YES i had NO ice axe, so im guilty too, but i know when to say when!
DOnt take it as an insult to all who read it, take it as a wake up call ,you COULD BE KILLED and CAN BE KILLED by that mountain at anytime!

4\25\09,.. five people were carried from the mountain,...I don't know how many were treated ,.. one 17 year old ,..hiking alone,.. for a planned 17 mile day trip ,.. touched off quite a search in very dangerous conditions ...
I watched a news story last night on this lost boy and they never even mentioned the people who searched for him..nor did they take the opportunity to explain why his plan put him and many others in danger.
I can hardly believe the attitude expressed through the actions I saw on 4\25 ,....how there were no fatalities?? ,.. is simply a miracle

I fail to see how your learning experience is different from peoples whom you are criticizing (sliding in avalanche, sliding on boiler plate...). Now you think you know where your limit is.
The thing that is missed is this "limit" is not a personal limit, its a combination of limits... mountain, conditions, etc. This is where people in trouble because they know their limit they just do not consult the all the other limiting factors before getting in over their heads.

Spelling and writing well can also be a measure of intelligence.
Unconstructive rants serve no purpose in preventing unnecessary accidents. There could come a day when the powers that grant access to parts of the mountains decide that nobody is allowed in Tuckerman Ravine.

From the link
Not only did the guy put himself in danger by skiing a part of the ravine that had already slid once that day, but he put anyone that was below him in danger, as well as anybody that might have had to rescue him if he wasn't so lucky and able to ride it out. A series of poor decisions indeed.
Stupid ??? I'm not sure... arrogant, ignorant ??.. Maybe,.. who knows ....

Since 1968 Tuckerman Ravine has been a part of my life. Of course, it was nearly the end of it on my first go (where I invented the off-waterfall yardsale).
I have been known to celebrate, moderately, when in the Ravine. It has been 41 years now and aside from a gap due to being out West, I can't recall a Tux season that did not involve frivolities and excessess equal to or greater than 4/25/09.
This is life, we get to live it as we see fit. When we break the rules, we get to pay the price. If along the way we are civil and understanding it's all a lot easier.
As to SAR and danger? Well, I'm a little suprised at the mention, but any time SAR goes out there are risks greater than if they did not. The stats on it are revealing. True the weather was mild, but there were slides every where on the East side and the rotting snow + spruce traps + snow pack undermining @ water courses make for substantial increases in danger.
Let's take five and collect our thoughts please, thanks.

The vets. in my group,. and others we talked with ,.who were there that day,.. had never seen anything like it.. Including one of the volunteers.
There seemed to be selfishness about the place,.. a kind of "it's all about me and my bellybutton " mentality ,.. an " I'll do what I want and if I get hurt\buried you will dig me out and carry me"..
One person behind me was complaining that the volunteers were not moving fast enough !

you have to remeber, most of the people that are up there in late april are there for the atmosphere that has become tucks, for the pilgramige that is the last turns of the season and some steep terrain that isn't littered about the east coast.
I started going 5 years ago when I was 20, walking around the shelters the first night an old timer asked if we had anything to trade, our greens for some beverages in green cans. We sat down with him and talked about the place and caught up with him the next moring and he acted as our guide. We had no clue really about some of the dangers that exists in the ravine but he was quick to point them out to us.
Not everyone that goes up there knows, and the people that do know and understand things that are naturally occuring also know that most of the others in the ravine probably havn't got a clue. No one is forced to go up there and be with all those "idiots", there are other places in the area that can be skiied with very few others around. But if you want that party scene you have to be prepared and know what could happen. 100s of people on the lunch rocks doesn't mean it's safe to sit there.
This past weekend my plans were moved from saturday to sunday because I read the avalanche report thursday and friday and didn't expect things to change much for saturday. Sunday instead of going to the bowl, we headed to GOS and had the place to ourselves till about 1ish, pinkham was full of cars sunday so one can only think that everyone else with skis was in the bowl keeping the party going.

It was an unbelievable day on many levels .Sorry, I was referring to SAR in general, not just the one day. I just took a quick look and found no ready stats. I base my idea on my read of Alison Osius references in her book "Second Ascent", about the Hugh Herr rescue, etc. She quotes rescue officials in the MWV area on the point.
As a TRV I have seen some really stupid crap, including a skier triggered avalanche that nearly swept up a dozen people, a supine-head-first-tuber run smack into a huge block of ice, and hundress of other poor decisions of various import. I will grant that 4/25/09 will go down in the top five for insanity. What is more I am willing to bet that there will be more than just the usual daily debrief for the Rangers.
Selfishness? Oh yes, indeed! Consider that the people there are the risk takers in our society and as such they reflect that spectrum of the society. If/When they get a bit older, they may also get wiser...in time to tut-tut over another crop.
Unbelievable? Not to me. But then I have seen some days. Nevertheless, I was not there because of the manifestly evident avi problem and I need to get my blueberries planted for my own piece of mind and domestic tranquility.

I can guarantee that he would have had the tip of my snowboard right back in his mouth then sent back to DC to see his dentist. No joke there. You think I wanted to set that thing off? Because I think Avy's are cool and I'm invincible and to hell with anyone standing below me? **** no. I mean if I had been further down to the skiers left in that thing, things would have gone worse for me probably.
Homeboy here has some balls going on a rant then admitting he got claimed by Hillman's Highway. I ride a slope that had been tracked "30-40 times" ahead of me (look at the avy report for 4/26, (http://tuckerman.org/avalanche/archives/2009-04-26.html)) and I'm just the unlucky/lucky one that was wrong place, wrong time. Am I relatively inexperienced compared to some? Yes. Did I make a questionable decision? Yep. Did I learn from it? You're F'in right, scared the crap outta me. One big humbling experience, you won't catch me slapping any high-fives over it, anyone can set an avy off. I'd rather be getting attention for hucking my switch 5 off the headwall then straightlining the runout, but life makes other plans.
OK, so I've cooled down since being thrown in the fire. So I just want to set the record straight and let it be known that I have all the respect in the world for Mt. Washington and all it's ravines, all mountains in general (NH48 finisher and 58/67 NE 4Ks,) and all backcountry hazards (avys, crevasses, undermined snow, ice fall, etc...) I love the hiking just as much as the snowboarding, its my two favorite things to do in the world. I actually ENJOY the exertion of busting my ass up the Tux trail (any trail), the headwall, and then reaping the reward of a sick line, then repeat. I donno about anyone else, but I kind of smile inside when I hear people my age (26) *****ing about hiking up the Tux trail, it isn't even steep or long. Get yourself in shape!
I'm not just some jerk-off who goes up there without his head or any idea what he's getting into, chugs a six pack, slowly climbs up the headwall while holding those up behind, tramples some alpine vegetation, looks down into the waterfall on the Lip, then tries to take one turn and cartwheels down the ravine. I mean, I kept my cool and rode the freakin' thing out, I know some of you have the ability, but think anyone can do that? I wouldn't shun me like I don't belong just because my run ended up a BIT (understatement) unorthodox. And you will NEVER catch me drunk in the ravine, or me or any of my kids (someday) with sleds or blow-up dolls.
I think it's kinda funny when people make these blanket statements from behind their computer over the web about someone they've never met. For example, "Oh, he's an idiot, I'd never want him on my team." When in reality I'm willing to help, willing to learn, respects my fellow climbing peers, and I dare say, a pretty strong climber, even after a SERIOUS foot injury suffered in a FATAL car accident(4 months later,) who would be a good part of a volunteer or SAR team carrying anyone's broke ass off the mountain. And believe me, I'm willing to do it.
Safe travels everyone and have a fun spring skiing/riding season. Not that any of you should give a crap but I've decided to stick around, hope to see some of you out there in the future. Cheers.
I was actually joking... thus the (jk)...

people are gonna talk sh!t about this no matter what Tdawg, you're gonna have to except that. You seem to have taken some knowledge of what not to do next time from this and that's what really matters.
The main thing is everyone made it out unharmed by the avalanches.
The majority of the problem lies in the crowd that was cheering you on while the avalanche was still coming down. They were cheering before they had any idea of what the outcome could have been.

Sorry RR, but I had to say it. And I don't ever go looking for trouble, but if some stranger slaps me at tucks, they're gettin it back.
And as for the crowd, I was taken back a bit too. I don't crave this kind of attention. If the video kept going it would have showed me just standing there, looking up at the slab, sayin to my self, "Holy, ****." Not beating my chest, playing to the crowd.

Why are people so surprised by crowds behavior? There are all 'kinds' in the crowd. I find group behavior always slips to low levels ....even in the back country. That's why some go to Gulf of Slides or over on Westside(cog area) to avoid this.
It's why I like to watch events(sports , concerts) at home but not be there, in the crowds. Riots at soccer matches. People in Boston overturning cars after Sox Victory.....etc...
All right...it's a far cry from the type of people and their character's that are BC skiers and hikers(you'ld hope)... but there are still Bozo's in the group...even though they had to make a much bigger physical effort to get there!.....They're there. Youth and stupidity are the gasoline that gets them there - endangering themselves and others.
Cheer an avalanche? Not surprised(what percentage were cheering?) Some cheer a fistfight(where injury or a rare death occurrs) while others are nauseated by the violence.
Tuckerman's...the back country Roman Coliseum.
By the way..."Hellman's Highway"( the only mayonnaise ski run) is a most delicious place to slide. Stick a loaf of bread on your ass to pad and to smear. I'll bring the sliced deli and meet you at the end of your fall and we'll all have a sandwich.

One of my great worries is getting too old and decrepit to be able to haul adequate brews to the Ravine. It tastes better up there, and it's is a nice way to make new acquaintances and show appreciation for people who work on the mountain.
Some beers make it all the way up to the bowl, some don't. If they do, there's plenty of snow to keep them cold!
I remember the time I first met DMC and some others from this site, midnight at the caretaker's deck on a starry friday night. I skinned up with a 12 pack of mixed frosties and we lined em on the railing for folks and crew to enjoy (I also recall some fine Scotch :) ). We saved the last Guinness for Elwood, who arrived later on in the evening. It rained the next day, but that's just dumb mountain luck. None of those beers made it to the bowl on saturday, good times!
It's true, some folks don't take the mountain or their partying in moderation when they visit the Ravine; it's too bad, because it would be a shame if rules/enforcement became the defining aspects of the Ravine experience. It's freedom that makes the place so cool.

nice to see some humility, TDawg. You'll do fine here.
Agree with the vets like Rider.Steve, DMC, M@, RR, etc. -- Tuck's, and to a much greater extent, Mt. Washington, is a truly special place. There's nothing quite like it anywhere east of the Rockies. And hell yeah, I always haul beverages up there! And I always bring some for the caretaker. It's a tradition.
4/25/09 was not that exceptional. I was up there two years ago when people were crawling all over Hillman's when it was rated Considerable, and it, after being skiied all day, finally slid, and big. As did the Lower Snowfields from the Christmas Tree on down, taking a skier with it, all within 20 minutes of each other. Miraculously, nobody was seriously injured or killed. My day consisted of hiking up to the base of the bowl, just to take a peak, then quickly getting out of there, enjoying the Hojo's festivities for a while, then having a great run down the Sherbie. And that was just fine with me. There will always be those who are ignorant of the risks or are just plain thrill-seekers. The trick is in not letting them ruin your day by getting you hurt or killed - and that is pretty easily accomplished on a mountain as big as Mt. Washington.
And you will NEVER catch me drunk in the ravine, or me or any of my kids (someday) with sleds or blow-up dolls.
Does HoJo's count as "in the ravine?"
I brought a sled up there one year - had a pretty good time.
And as for blow-up dolls... this is a PG board.

Hojo's does not equal the ravine in my eyes. I guess I'm tryin' to say that dulling my senses in a spot where I'm at risk of "death from above" isn't something I'm really into. A few beers? fine. An 18 pack and a funnel? Not me.
In the safety of Hermit Lakes, all bets are off. Any alcoholic beverages just taste better when your back and legs feel them on the way up! My buddies and I were joking about rigging up a sled set-up to bring a "log" of beer , or a keg :keg: if we're feeling ambitious, up to Hermit. Team of 6+, 2 people pulling at a time, rotate shifts. I was only half joking though....
And I don't look down on the sledders, I just would rather be in more control, and most sled runs I've seen end in cartwheels. I'm not as flexible as I used to be! :) As for the blow-up doll, I thought someone mentioned that someone had one up there on Saturday, only reason it came to mind.

really not going to feed into this anymore,
the guy learned from his mistake... fine
the people want to mouth off about what they would do "if someone slapped some common sense" into them.. smoke some more weed
the people want to risk lives and expect its their "rights" and their "liberty" to get saved, fine, lets start BILLING them for it, see how stupid people act then
the people on lunch rocks "not a one was sober" go tucks
I was on a ski patrol for three years, if ANYONE was drinking on the mountain TICKET CLIPPED end of story, people have low IQS and alchohol has a funny way of lowering it further
I continue to read news reports about tucks (just saw one on the wire today in fact) I may be in DC but i am FAR from inexperienced
Case in point one guy said if the "morons" and "teens fueled by whatever" can get there they WILL, tucks is a wonderful place, just not safe by any means
people who are "cool" seem to add up in cemeterys
strange how those stats dont lie
as for tucks the report we will release on the trip as well as the whole area is being held off for now, we are watching the rest of the season to see, we do not want to give the WRONG impression and DOUBLE the traffic to an already crazy place
I dont want those deaths on my hands
as for life in the BC, keep skiing, riding and drinking, until you either perish from a mistake, or get wiser for them!
Im done, i make way to many figures to fight with beer can plankers
FYI: none of my posts were insulting or pompus in anyway, weall know its the truth

wow. kid, I'm really interested in hearing about these delusions regarding the reach of your media empire. There's another thread on here about legitimate photojournalists, and how difficult it can be to get work and to break into the business. You, however, claim to maintain an IT staff to update your networks and websites, in house film development, and all the other trappings of a "privately held, nationally known" media corporation. After all the resources that went into producing this "documentary footage" all winter, you now plan on scrapping the project because some people have a cold pop or two on Lunch Rocks? While your language exhibits an extraordinary level of both clarity and tact, I question it's veracity.
As far as I can figure, you're a snowllerblader from Lewiston with penchant for hyperbole and run on sentences, who just because he's got a camera and some homemade press credentials, is now "media".
If I'm wrong, I'll sherpa your company's gear all over the bowl next time, deal?

Not sure why you would scrap the project for that. Seems a good reason TO INCLUDE IT. Either way, don't expect to sell that many east-y videos. It has been done before, you realize, right? I know people who have been doing it for years (Meatheads and more), and that are not breaking DVD records exactly (but big ups to Meatheads, who are the best of eastern filmers).
As far as the veracity of claims. Sounds legit, in that they went out and filmed. That has been done before and then never came to fruition. For a national media company, you don't come up on Google, and the site for the film project is less than top shelf, IMHO. A Ning site? Less than impressive.
Don't get me started on the AngelFire-esque site design with repeating pattern background. Were they out of goofy skier animated GIF's?
No, but seriously, presentation needs work and dedicated domains are more confidence-inspiring, if you want to sell these eventually of the InterWebs.
Perhaps they were contracted by someone to get foot-y for some RSN-type content outlets (Jeep Skiing Shows, web portal content, etc.). Not outside the realm of possibility. Not sure how the finished product will come out and be received by the target audience (east skiers), if these guys are not clued-in to the scene. I've seen pro outfits take good film and make a hokey mess.
And talking about how much $ you make is ALWAYS tacky. Ew.

Time to let this one go and move on (imho), this site is about skiing, collaborating, keeping each other safe via that collaboration, and sharing our experiences, right?.....

We dont need more media on the mountain anyways. It would probably just end up more regulated if it was more publicly exposed, which by the sounds of mediamans last post, he thinks more regulations are needed. There are many who think the way he does, and flying under the radar as best you can is prolly a good policy, after all we all love to play on publicly owned land and media has a huge influence on public policy.

That was way too easy. I started giving the finger to loon years ago, when they tried charging for parking, and I still got it on the first pic.

Speaking of the media, tonight's NH Chronical: http://www.wmur.com/chronicle/19260378/detail.html
"The snow rangers of the Mount Washington Avalanche Center work long hours and sometimes their customers literally fall from above. But without their presence, their advice and their skills, people who enter their inhospitable realm can become disoriented, hypothermic and find themselves in serious trouble."

You are lucky to have such a quality mountain in your back yard.
I love my local hill, I grew up skiing it when I was younger, and for that sentimental value my opinion of it won't change.
It's Ski Sundown in New Hartford CT, 2 miles down the street, I can see it at night when they turn their lights on.
I'm just happy to have something.

Dude needs a splif...
Quite right.
The mistake that many snowriders make when they experience extreme steeps is to let the legs stiffen up from all of the adrenaline and lean back from the fall line.
You have to free the mind and flex those legs, keep the weight centered on the edges to really punch em.
