When I was up in the bowl Wednesday a family had lost their Black Lab whose name I think was Gabe...Last I hear it may have headed over to the West side...Does anyone know how that little nightmare ended?

Hopefully with a found dog and a trip to the store for a leash...

I hate hearing about this stuff... Poor dogs..

Yes, hopefully they got him back....Apparently he's less than a year old and while he had a tag on his collar with his name with a cell phone number on it, I just couldn't imagine letting him out of their sight! That's like letting a five year old wander off...Hello?

I was up Thursday, heard a guy telling a story about a black lab that followed him UP the bowl to the summit and back to the headwall on Wednesday but would not go back down. Hope this has a happy ending. I would really love to bring my newf, but I'm not 100% confident he would stay with me. You just can't leave your dog up there....

I guess it's part training (environment) and part luck (genetics), but some dogs just seem at home out there and are happy to be along. My Golden absolutely LOVES it and doesn't hesitate to go up high with me. He is like a Mountain Goat and when the climb gets really steep, he's no dummy...he falls right into step in the boot pack. We've done GOS, Hillman's, Left and on Wednesday we went to the high snowfileds and then skied down and dropped The Lip together. I am so lucky to have such a fun & adventurous dog. When his father's owner, a dear friend in Wolfeboro suggested his name be Tuckerman knowing my love for the area, it was a no-brainer...Tuckerman he is!

Brought my little guy up into the bowl for the 1st time yesterday, been working up to it for a while. Since he had no problems in GoS the other day, I brought him up and down right gully with me. Not sure if I would bring him down over the lip, I'm worried at what angle he'd finally balk on coming down after me.

Firends of mine..Luckily Someone found the dog and it was waiting for them in the parking lot tied to a tree. They unfortunatly didn't have a great ski day becuase it, but I'm sure they are VERY appreciative to whomever helped the dog out.

Wow, that's great news! Thank you for the update. I am so glad this has a happy ending. I'm sure they were very distraught! I spoke with the mom several times and she was keeping her emotions in check for the kids sake, but I could tell she was shaken. I hope they can get Gabe into school and teach him not to roam! Treats are KEY!

Godfrey hate to hear stuff like this. So glad dog and owner were reunited! I have lived through that terror. Pooch may or may not fare too well on the rockpile. My 4 year old black lab and only daughter does well at trailheads; lots of snacks and friendly people, and loves to hike. I usually let her do her thing in the parking lot while I rig up. One morning at the cog base, finally ready to go, I gave her a shout and no doggie. Others reported she had followed the wrong guy up the wrong trail. He must have given her a donut or something. Frantic chase up the Jewell trail for me. Finally heard her merry little cowbell from above as I neared treeline. Joyful reunion return to base and still had a fine ski in Oakes and Munroe brook. Lesson learned: I bring the donuts from now on, and keep her on a short leash. Don't know today if I would have the chops to reel her in like that.

Maybe they should just leave the dog at home next time and go to a class themselves...

Glad this dog was reunited. Some dogs are great in the steep snow slopes and don't wander off...some should be left home. Some owners don't know the difference.

Several bad incidences in the past of dogs tumbling down the Lip....

One was a lab puppy, about 6 months old(right breed but too young) barrel rolled just over the lip 3-400 feet before stopping or being stopped by hiker. Rolled by everyone in lip-line hiking up with no one doing anything about the rolling pup just feet from them. I saw what was happening and immediately sprinted upslope from below near lunch rocks..made it to dog just after he stopped. Owner thanked me any way.Pup was OK. Never gained so much vertical so fast....but I couldn't watch because it was a little upsetting to watch.

Another incident was more sickening to watch. Also from the lip, an adult Spaniel wound up 'rag-dolling' (end over end) same hundreds of feet. Dog was cognitive and seemed okay....but rumor from another person up there that day was the dog died later.

Also in the those that can't speak for themselves group...

An infant was brought up for just a ski down the sherbie in kid carrier backpack this winter. Several incredulous looks from several diff. groups hanging inside caretaker Luke's cabin front area-warming up and eating. WHY? That alone wasn't it (skiing w/6-month old baby) -but it was 7 below with regular gusts of 50+ MPH just outside cabin(30-40 below windchill)! Baby's cheeks were exposed and beet red............questionable sanity.

If they can't express they're(dog or child) having fun....maybe they're not. And if they ARE having fun - don't take them over a cliff they might have trouble with....or out in ' severe danger zone' wind chills...go yourself.

I say this in complete seriousness - Animal owners are mentally ill!!! Of course, I can be empathetic. Especially because the outdoorsy types really care for what is good for the animal, versus only about what the animal provides for the owner. I swear, a majority of pet owners don't realize how abusive they can be, without realizing! There is a difference between keeping a pet alive, versus letting him live....just like people, sort of! I mean, treating an animal like a person (especially a dog) accounts for a lot of what I would consider abuse......anyway...

There are some great dogs showcased here. I've met Tuckerman a fews weeks ago in GOS and man, what a great dog! A true companion. I saw him running around Pinkham early that morning...that dog was gunning to go with the same excitement and anticipation we all experience at the trail head. I noticed him running out of the Visitors center. For some reason the thought that he had just ran inside for a "quick drink" popped into mind. He seemed so happy, focused, driven, and "Smiling"! I assumed he was local, maybe even a rescue dog. He seemed so intentional in his movements. Did I mention, he seemed so happy? A few hours later, I unexpectedly met the dog and his lucky owner in the Gulf!

Hey PH~ It was nice meeting you and Mainwaring in the Gulf that day! Tucker is never more alive and full of himself than when we are up there playing in the snow! It has been in the low 90's F down here the past few days and his tongue has practically been dragging on the ground. I could see from the look in his eyes he was longing to be lounging in the white stuff again! We will be back up again in the next two weeks I'm sure and I can't wait either...Thanks for the kind words about my best friend! :cooldog:

Hey,
We were the 'boneheads' that had our lab slip away at Pinkham notch on that fateful day in April. I underestimated him that morning, and shoulda had him on his leash while we were booting up. Perhaps if the family that escourted him up the trail from the parking lot had called back to me...well, never mind.
Fateful error I relived in my mind over and over. At one week shy of a year, I was doubtful of even bringing him along with us - too many perils, but I got talked into it. He's not a runner, and generally is pretty smart and disciplined. I had intended only to bring him to Ho - Jo's to hang out. He got there alright, then headed out to the bowl, then on up Right Gully, then onto the summit. Thank goodness for the wonderful man that took him under his wing, and rerouted his trip down the auto road, recognizing his youth and exhaustion. I did get to catch up with his rescuer and was able to show my appreciation.
Yup, we screwed up, and we all got lucky. Gabe is back safe and sound, and boy was he tired!! What should have been a perfect day was full of strife for our family. Lesson learned for us. Don't know that the dog ever even knew how close he had come...
Thanks for those with positive thoughts for us that day.
