I'm looking for footwear recommendations for the hiking portion of the Inferno race. I don't think the sole of the average trail running shoe is agressive enough for the snow. And I don't think I'll actually be running, but rather a brisk walking pace.
Thanks.

Trail running shoes should be fine, with kahtoola microspikes if trail conditions warrant.
I've hiked to Hojos in trail runners in the spring, with skis and boots on my back, and prefer it, if there is not enough snow for skinning.

Thanks.Consider some micro-spikes (http://www.kahtoola.com/microspikes.html) to add grip and wear shoes that you have some miles on.

Might be a good idea to use an extra lace to make sure the micro-spikes stay put if you find that certain sections find you ready to pick up the pace

Mine were falling off constantly, couple weeks ago when I hiked into the Great Gulf; had to weave my shoelaces through them.
