Hey guys still have the big hike and ski planned for March 28th, 2009. We have been skiing tucks for over 20 years and do it about ten times a year starting in late April. This is the first year we are planning on a March Hike up. I am looking forward to skiing down to the car for the first time. Anyone know what shape the Sherburne Trail is in?

We have all cold winter gear, not sure what we will need from it. Any tips, forecast for our date, or information, is wanted. We have an idea what to expect for the most part of course but any information is welcomed. We will be doing a video and posting it so anyone doing tucks after our date can use it to plan their hike as well as for snow coverage, etc. Ronnie.

p.s. Today is a sad day for skiers, the first day of spring. I am already getting depressed. :ng2006:

From the latest avalanche advisory:

The John Sherburne Ski Trail is open all the way to Pinkham Notch. Signs of spring are already showing on the trail...there is water ice, a couple rocks, and the stubble of bushes coming through in some areas.

expect a lot of frozen crud. but it sounds like coverage is not too bad. I'll try to report back after my trip this weekend.

Thanks, I figured I was safe in March, but does sound like spring-ish conditions. Any reports up until Wed would be great. Hoping to shoot nice video ski bowl down to parking lot.

Hitting Sunday river Thur, Friday, it will make 41 total ski days on mountain so far this season. We really need a dump to get us through April.

I am watching weather.

Thanks I am going to hope for the best, I don't have that option. The guys that I am going with only have weekends off and only can go on Sat. We been planning trip since Jan. That would suck if it rained out. Can you find a good long term forecast for MT. Washington? I wonder if they will get snow up in the bowl if it is raining down below?

planned and going maybe a contingency would be good, number of other options in the locale that are great, keep watching the forecast and adjust accordingly. You never know what will happen, hope you have an epic trip.

In talking with one of the forecasters about weather prediction, esp MtW, they mentioned that "anything beyond 3 days is a crapshoot. in the mountains, anything beyond 12 hours is a guess at best." Is it possible to get a long-range forecast? Yeah. But I can give you a long-range forecast with the spin of a wheel and it'll be just as accurate.

I encountered water ice coming down the sherby at 2 today, and a hard crust where ever it was in the shade. For best conditions i would suggest trying to hit it not long after noon. I have my fingers crossed for good weather for yea, best of luck!

No I understand the forecast part of it. Been climbing these mountains all year round for over 20 years. One thing I learn that even though weather is so un predictable there seams to be a norm set over the years. Like most seasons in March you can ski down to your car.

Anyway I have lots of free time but it seams like everyone else has to plan thing like months in advance so if I don't want to go alone I have to pray for good weather.

Last year we did tucks 10 times in May, June, and 7 of the hikes were in rain. I have all my gortex ready to go. I only care about the snow at this time, as long as I can ski down to the car.

Anyone know if the snow goes all the way down to the end of the trail? If not how close to the end. We are going this sat.

Does anyone know if the water well on the tucks trail is accessible. This is early in the season for us so I am not sure. Also we always just pump it and drink but I never asked if this is okay to do without filtering it.
