WMUR (Manchester, NH) has a story on Tuckerman today:
Tuckerman Ravine Said To Be Dangerous (http://www.thewmurchannel.com/news/2165683/detail.html)

Probably the worst Tuckerman article ever, but I suppose if it saves one person it might be good.

In other news, Water said to be Wet (http://www.snopes.com/toxins/dhmo.htm)

Yes I've seen a few other reports on that service that are just tooo useful... maybe we should all put away our 'I Skied the Headwall' t-shirts and head over to Bretton Woods.

I think al-Sahhaf's Report for April 29th (http://timefortuckerman.com/disinformation.html?3) is about as useful.

Indeed it is a dangerous place to be these days!

That's odd... I though it was all part of an infidel conspiracy to show that we are still all the same crazy idiots that we were before Pearl Harbor

On any given day...what isn't dangerous? I was sitting here yesterday and one of the adjustment handle/screw thingys blew on my office chair. I could've been killed. That'd be embarassing. I'd rather disappear into a crevasse. Blaze'o'glory type perish.
Anything can happen anywhere. It's all about being responsible and risk management.
(Two weeks to go!!)

I'd rather die quietly in my sleep, like my grandfather, as opposed to screaming, like his passengers.

OMG!!! I've skiied Tucks for years and NEVER realized there was any danger involved! Even Bretton Woods may be toooo dangerous for us types. Anyone want to go to King Pine or maybe McIntyre with me instead? As an aside, I never realized that water was wet or fire was hot, either. Hmmmm, maybe that's why I always get 3rd degree burns when I barbeque??? Safety first. Al

I rode Bretton Woods once after a March Tucks trip....

I actually fell asleep while riding an "expert" trail and ended up sliding all the way back down to the lodge on my back with my hands folded on my chest..... I was horrible... Lucky I didn't slide into the woods... But it did make for a great nap after climbing the day before... ;) ;) ;)

In regards to these posts. This Sunday(I hope) will be my first time skiing Tuck's. It seems that they are talking about the Cutler River. Your maps show this on the far skiiers left. Being new to this, it seems there is plenty of good challenging skiing to be had while avoiding these crevasses. It is understood that being backcountry there are dangers. I guess, to make a long question longer, how easy or difficult is it to avoid the crevass areas?

It's very easy...
You can see the crevases plainly.. The usually form on the right side of the bowl where the water runs and the sun hits the bowl the strongest. Talk to the Rangers about it. Most of the time they have a guy posted at the entrance to the bowl who can answer questions about crevases and falling ice. Great thing about Tucks is there's lots of helpful people..!

When I was at Tucks two weekends ago we came across a scene where a guy has JUST been pulled out of undermined snow on the Little Headwall.. And we had JUST told his group to avoid the Little Headwall after they asked us our opinion on it....

Have fun!

I'll second the "Talk to the Rangers" comment. Talk to them at HoJo's, there is always one there. Sean: You are correct, there is a lot of challenging skiing in areas easily avoiding the crevases. Hillman's, Left Gulley, and maybe the chute come to mind. Well, Hillman's isn't too hard except the very top, but the chute will probably be crevease free... but ASK the rangers, that's what they do, and they are damn good at it.

There is usually a ranger at the base of the bowl, near the first-aid cache there. They don't mind talking at all, and when you ask them, lots of people tend to lean in to hear, maybe you'll save someone else's butt too.
