Here is one heck of a story from that other Web site. Read the thread--it's got stories from the rescuer and rescued.

Wow, Scary Stuff
Glad everything worked out.
Practice, Practice, Practice - It could save your life or your friend's
I'm glad he mentioned what type of beacon he used, and that there were reports of the "Tracker" having range issues and he didn't experience them.
Anyone else hear that the "Tracker" has range issues?
I'm concerned cause its the one I have.

I think the Tracker's range is in the same ballpark as the other digital-only beacons.
An alternative with longer range would be the Ortovox Patroller, with which you can start out in analog mode and then switch to digital, but you'll be dealing with a steeper learning curve.

The Tracker definitely has a shorter range than many other models, but whether that really matters is subject to much debate

Incorrect -- some other digital-only models have significantly longer ranges.

Edits for clarity:
"One alternative with longer range would be the Ortovox Patroller, with which you automatically start out in analog accoustics only mode and then automatically switch over to distance readout coupled with digitized accoustics and then eventually distance indicators kick in too, but you'll be dealing with a steeper learning curve."
