View Full Version : Last Snow Contest
There's not much snow left, and the warm weather is wiping it out quick, so let's take this oppertunity to see who can guess when it'll be ALL gone.
You: Guess a date and Time that you think there will be NO snow in Tuckerman Ravine.
Me: keep an eye on the secret Ton-Matt member's only webcam link and note the FIRST image with NO trace of snow. (Which will have a date/time stamp on the image) (Lawyer talk: First Image where you can see the ravine and verify that there is no Snow remaining, if it's a close call maybe Dave can setup a poll to choose the correct date/time, becuase there won't be more than a couple possibilities if it's close)
Winner will be the guess that is CLOSEST to this image's date and time. (You can go over or under)
Chances are, the first image will be a morning image after a bunch of cloudy days. So keep that in mind. If you happen to see an image with no snow, SAVE it to your hard drive and we'll all believe you as the images have date and time stamps (Which, I've heard are VERY hard to fake)
My guess is: 2003-07-18 8:30am.

Maybe a case of your :ducttape: stash perhaps? :p
I'll have to analyze a few photos and get my date and time recorded. The polls are only set up to allow options, ie like July 15-16, July 17-18, July 19, July 20 etc. Considering the number of T4T members who are around, I'd suggest they just post to this thread and I can keep a summary topic up-to-date.

Hmm, the tough thing is that the snow will be too much brown to be visible on the cam enough soon, I think.
Mr. Lftgly skied Tucks in august 96, 97 and 2001 and he doesn't think it will be possible this year, but not totally impossible. So I'm going to say July 25, 7h04PM lol

Just a little precision about the stamps. Be careful with that, cause it's extremely easy to fake. For the Tucks cam example, the letters are some Arial unicode [MS] and for the numbers, I didn't find it, but you just have to save few pics to have the 0-9 numbers and copy / paste. So in 5 minutes you can fake any stamp of any image anywhere on the web, so you better not believe too much the stamps on pics that people send to you :)
Just need "Paint" to do a great fake job ;)
Sad that I don't have a place to put the pics online... I could show you there is still some snow below the Lip, on sept 23, 2003 !! lol

July 25th at 8:23am... now don't be upset if the cam is covered in rain drops or there is a white out... I truly suspect this will be the case for several days on/and about July 25th... please just take my word for 'July 25th at 8:23am' and hand me my price.
Thank you very much, enjoy your day :p
P.S. Don't be surprised if you see me up in the ravine licking snow to make my date happen.
I thought through the whole rain/camera down problem. I tried to make the rules as simple as possible based on this.
So to CLARIFY (not change the rules) If it's rainy/foggy/camera is down for several days, the FIRST IMAGE that COMES BACK with A CLEARN VIEW of the ravine and we can veryifyt there is no snow, THAT will be the date/time.
If it's foggy and someone's date comes along, and they hike up and take a picture and show there is no snow, I will accept that picture and they win.
I dunno what the prize (price) is. But there will be a fantastic one of a kind prize.
M@
The timestamp talk was reference to the movie Strange Brew (http://www.strangebrewmovie.com/StrangeBrew/movieinfo/Strange_Brew_script.pdf) where the guy fakes the timestamps and then says in court:
Claude: Yes, and I'd like to point out that this tape have not been tampered
with or edited in any way. It even has a time code on it, and those are very
difficult to fake.

Some more CLARIFICATION on the date:
#1: I will make final decision. Looks like I'm gonna be out of the running pretty quick anyhow.
#2: It's the last visible snow by the webcam. There may be some snow under a rock up there still a few weeks after, but it'll be pretty much impossible to ski it. I figure if there's enough snow to see from WildCat, there's enough for a couple turns.

Couldn't see any snow yesterday on the Webcam, though I suspect it was just the bad light. This AM the cam's down, still showing yesterday's gloomy pic. My personal bet is August 3, 3PM. I think Castlerock's got the right day for last snow. Maybe gone already though, if the pic from yesterday is confirmed by a new one in good light.

According to the remaining snow of july 17 (where it wasn't foggy) and the melting rate, it's sure there is still some snow in the ravine, especially with the low temps.
I hope the cam will come back soon... if we don't want to lose our contest !!
Hmm, nice day today, aim : to see what's up in 40+ ski areas. lol
Frankontour
07-19-2003, 08:18 PM
Damn ! I'm far from my aim... just 20 with all the traffic jam of today... sad...
Actual ski areas
Mt Olympia, Mt Avila, Mt St-Sauveur, Mt Habitant, Mt Gabriel, Ski Morin Heights, Centre Municipal de ski 40/80, Mt Chantecler, Mt Belle Neige, Mt Vallée-Bleue, Mt Alta, Ski Montcalm
Lost ski areas :
Mt Gabriel North north , Mt Alouette, Mt Sauvage
Sun Valley south, Mt Plante, Mt Lac Lucerne, Mt Pontbriand, Mount Snow.
I should count the number of actual + lost ski areas just in the Laurentians + Lanaudiere, it's enough amazing... about 60 in a territory ± big like Rhode Island. I wonder if it's the territory in the world with the biggest concentration of different ski areas ! (counting the lost ones, as there is just 19 ski areas actually alive in this zone).

My skiis are not hung up yet. The poles are though. The skiis are leaning in the corner of the garage in the very slim change I will need them at a moments notice.

DMC, I've never been there of my life... it's not 7 days more of waiting that will break my heart.
Anyway, this is even not for skiing. If there was a correct amount of snow to ski (at least 6-7 turns), I would possibly go. But as there is just a little bit of dangerous undermined snow, I can wait quite easily.
I know that the weather can change a lot and fastly, there, but I prefer to wait a day where the risks of bad changes will be low. Anyway, as I said, this is not for skiing so I can wait with no problem.
Anyway, we're just wednesday. The weather pattern can totally change before saturday and there is still good chances that I go !
Alrighty then...
You seem to have all the answers!
Good luck! Enjoy!

Actually customs is a breeze at this time of year. Try coming across at 1 in the morning with ski gear at this time of year. Warning flags pop up everywhere. We've learned that's it's best to bury the skis and throw the camping gear on top and just say we're going hiking and camping. If they search us and find skis we just say that we read on the internet that there was still snow and we were taking our skis just in case, but the main reason for the trip is to go hiking.
This weekend is the big Phish show in Maine...
I bet customs guys have a field day with this crowd...

Lol, this wasn't to close the conversation or so. I just want to have a great experience... to be eager to come back in april, may, june and july next year :D
I timed my first trip for beautiful weather (that is, I watched the reports and waited until Thursday night to decide whether I was going) and had a great experience that has kept me coming back. So I understand how you feel, although it sounds like you're already hooked without having set foot there!

Thanks to understand me, BG :)
Effectively, I'm already a little bit hooked as you say and I can thank Lftgly a lot, cause I'd just seen few pics of the place and almost no comments, before to see his incredible reports, all over the spring. T4T also hooked me a lot when I knew it :)
I guess you're heading to Toni Matt club today ?
About the customs, yes Jolly J, I wouldn't say I'm going to ski (especially as Tenney is closed now). But anyway, my decision is done, I don't bring my skis... as anyway, most of the patch looks to have collapsed yesterday.
Ouch, the thunderstorms forecast is back for saturday... I'm still looking, but it begins to look to like next saturday for me.

I guess you're heading to Toni Matt club today?I've been monitoring the board to see which of you will get there first. That's hard to say - my money's on you. We have been patiently waiting for BG to get to TM status - she will not be rushed. Let's have a party :beermug: , :pizza: , :hottub: , :saxaphone: to celebrate when she gets there.

Hmm, it will be a big deal to reach 100 before BG :) . I'm 13 msgs behind her with 18 to reach 100.
Anyway, I don't target to challenge BG... but I would like to reach the TMC in less than 1 month... which means august 3 before 9h33PM ! lol
This is my real target ;)

Yes, with a little chance, next saturday will be great enough for doing a little day on the mountain !
As I can see, it was a good decision not going this morning, cause on the webcam, we just see nothing ! lol ! Same thing on the wildcat's one.

Still nothing visible on the cam. So unless august snows, I think that the game will be between Lftgly and Stoogie. I hope next weekend will be less foggy !

OK, my time ran out Sunday afternoon, and I forgot to check the webcam.
Just checking the TFT board to see if anyone skied. As of Thursday, it looked like there would be something left for a few turns this weekend. I blew it off, although the weather wasn't all that bad today.
Now someone tell me they skied, to make me feel really bad about not going...
Frankontour
08-04-2003, 08:44 AM
For the webcam lftgly, there was nothing visible anyway. In fact, you're Ok until august 5 or 6 to be the closest one.
I can't believe I read this morning (on FTO) that there was still 8-10 turns possible last weekend on the patch. This was certainly some very short turns ;)
5 days ... 5 days... but no skis.

You should stay close to the Tucks cam.
Actually, the sky over wildcat is clear and the clouds over Tucks seem to leave slowly. So if it continues like that, we *could* see if there is still some snow, later today !

Congrats, Stoogie, it now looks sure that you won the contest.
Finally, tonight we clearly see the ravine. There is still a TINY bit of snow on the right part of the snowpatch. I have the pic of tonight and I had to compare it with other pics to be sure that it was really a part of the patch. So it will probably won't be visible at all in 1-2 days, so I think you're the winner !
Franken: Can you send me the image? I didn't see anything last night or yesterday for that matter. All clouds.
This morning I can just make out the outline of the ravine, so sometime today we might get a peek at what the last week hath wrought.
If it clears and shows no snow, then the last time I DID see snow was 2003-08-01, and I was keepeing a pretty close watch. If anyone has images of snow AFTER 2003-08-1, let me know.
If it clears and there's snow, the game is still on, until 8/20/03 4:04 AM, which is the mid point between Stoogie and RR.

I might make another trip to Tuckermans on Saturday, if I do, I'll take more pictures to prove the snow is either there or not. Unless, you guys are going primarily with the webcam for this contest?? It'll either be Tucks or Carter Dome, not sure which yet. :skifemcool:

Well, I think that at origen, it was only with the webcam. We know the snow will continue under some rocks for few more days / weeks, but as we're not everyday in the ravine (even Lftgly :D ), we wouldn't be able to control if there is still effectively a tiny patch of snow in the ravine.
I sent the pic of yesterday evening to M@. I don't control the rules, but it's obvious there won't be snow visible for a while, even with perfect clear blue sky, in the ravine, on august 20. So according to the real thing, it's clear for me that Ski Stooge is the winner.

You better see "Frank" "Contour" for the explanation of my name.
Contour (of Mont Orford) is my #1 best trail in ski and I don't think a trail at Mt Wash could beat it in my top trails.
sorry about name mis representation: I like the "Frank on Tour" image it conjures up. Like your a rock star touring the ski resorts of north america.

I'm sure Frank gets the prize for most ski areas hiked-and-skied in a day in the Northeast this 02-03 season. Four in one day April 25th! Val Saint-Come, La Reserve, Le Chantecler, and Mont Gabriel. "Contour" or "on tour" is a fitting double-entendre for you!

LOL what a day it was !
April 25... legendary day for sure.
If you know the number of times I heard words like : crazy, mad, stupid, sick, etc after that day... even on the ski boards. :)
But WHAT A DAY IT WAS !!!! I would re-do that anytime.
What a badluck for you, that day... good for me... and super good for Gary Way, in 20" of powder at Cannon. Avalanche really looked top shape, that day !!! I remember 3 days later all the snow had melt on the front five :( :( :(

IS the criteria "Closest without going over"? Or closest period? I need to win to stroke my ego. lol On another note: I went to Watkins Glen this weekend (Sat not Sun) GT1 race, etc. Rainy and a lot of fun. My buddies made me down too many  's. Didn't see a lot of racing. Have fun, be safe. Al :skistooge:
No snow in today's picture.
So last VISIBLE snow was the 2003-08-06, and Stoogie is our Last Snow winner! I'm still working on a prize.
And: Though this is a joyus event for Stooge, it means there is sadly now no snow in the ravine.
Bring on WINTER.

I think you're right, M@. Looking to the cam this morning, it looks like there is still a tiny white point, but I'm not sure at all if this could be snow. It's too hard to be sure.
And just when there is no snow, the weather begins to look better in the ravine... and I'll have missed snow when I go there next saturday. (I pray for that)

Sorry to see the amount of snow at TR is identical to that in Greece. But, congratulations to :skistooge: .
M@ :ma: I noticed a small white spot on the webcam image, but it is lower than where the remaining snow was previously. Any idea what it is? Near the bottom of the webcam image. I don't think it's :snowflakes: .
Greece was :sun: and we had time to swim in the Aegean Sea. The water is between turquoise and aqua, and refreshing, with a mountain range in the background. Later in the day the water turned a darker shade of blue. We also saw the Acropolis and some other awesome stuff. An exciting race in a relaxing and picturesque location. It's about as good as it gets without :snowflakes: . BG should be returning from her European adventure soon - I wonder if she found the Alps....... :skifemcool:
I think the long white spot towards the base of the ravine is rock or water.
Not sure, but I think it might be the little headwall.

Thank you all. I am thinking of applying for a position as a weather forcaster at the Old Farmers Almanac. I now predict that there is NEVER a bad day to ski Tucks as long as it is done safely. If this rain ever stops, I may try to get up in there this weekend hiking and I will, if I do, verify the existance or non-existance of any white Ambroia. IK, Have fun, be safe. Al :skistooge:

Mum, were you in Greece for the Olymipc test-runs? I heard they are disorganized and unlikely to be ready for the 2004 Olympics. Was that your impression? Did your son race? I was. My opinion -> Greece has their work cut out. 1. The roads are all under construction. 2. The housing facilities are minimal. There wasn't adequate housing for the Junior World Championships, much less an Olympic crowd. 3. Food. The German team had to go home without competing when over 60 competitors got salmonella poisoning. 4. The athletic facilities must have been designed by administrators, without the input of coaches or athletes. It will be interesting to see if they can fix things up in time.
Skidude sticks to :skicool: . My daughter raced (crew - junior 8; the USA won a silver medal - Romania got the gold, but not by much.) My daughter :snowboarding: in the winter, but she didn't inherit my ski-addiction gene. Each to their own....her knees are probably safer in a boat...
Elwood - I think you are on to something here. :disinfo: It's suspicious that Stoogie rematerialized to claim victory after lying low for so long. Can :skistooge: prove that it wasn't him hiding on TR, masquerading as the patch of snow? On the day he predicted as the last snow day he moved to the lower spot to continue working on his tan, not realizing that we could detect him there.
