Today started out like any other day. Get up let dog out. Turn on the heat throughout the house. Tend to the kids then take a shower, pack my lunch and I'm out the door. Before hitting the highway I stopped for gas and grabbed a BIG coffee.

As I was cruising down the highway I wondered if today would be the day. The sun was bright and skies were mostly clear. I thought it was quite possible that it would be today.

My car began climbing in elevation as I traveled down 101 East; a drive I have been doing for nearly six years. As my carrolled over hill I was climbing, there it was directly in front of me.

The most beautiful scene.

I looked out over the open landscape toward the Monadnock Region and there she was; Mount Monadnock herself, standing tall cloaked in the most magnificent white snow. The sun looked as if it were a spotlight pointing directly on her.

Today is an important day and causes me to reflect. For me it signifies that winter is indeed here. It also brings back the most wonderful memories of my childhood. Growing up in an old farmhouse in Wentworth, NH I used to look out the kithchen window, ascross a vast field to similar scene. However, the mountain in panorama was that of Mount Mousilaukee.

I am greatful to the mountains for the joy and peace they have brought to me over my 33 years.

Well put, kfarrar! Those are good days.

I used to spend time in Wentworth, a very pretty place. Ever ski Moosilauke? Lots of nice lines...

Why would anyone spent time in Wentworth? There is not much there.

No I have never skied Mousilaukee, but I am planning on it this winter.

I used to live in the Upper Valley, and skied and hiked the area west of 25 and south of 112 quite a bit (Moosilauke, Carr Mtn, Benton range). Great classic New England tight trails, and some decent slides too.

Especially given your heritage, Moosilauke is a must. Almost all of the hiking trails are great descents -- Glencliff is a personal favorite, but Gorge Brook and Carriage Road are good too. Beaver Brook on the north face can be good, but is more often icy and rough. When there's a big dump and light winds, there are some good summit snowfields to the north, though. Slide Brook on the west side is thrilling up high, but can be a bit of a slog coming out once you get down if snowmachines haven't packed it. The old trail down Jobildunc Ravine is grown in, but if the Baker River headwaters are frozen and powder-covered, you can hike up from the Dartmouth lodge and find some good gully skiing.

It is a great area to live. I used to walk out my back door and start climbing up to Mount Carr. It was quite a playground to have as a kid.

Thanks for the beta on Mousilaukee. When I go I will definatley post an announcement. Probally sometime in February.

Hey M@,

From the looks of your photo above, you had a tough summer. Lay off the hardstuff and stay out of the sun! Or is it lack of snow and skiing that has led to the transformation?

Moosilauke is a great mountain to ski. I'll definitely get up there a couple times this year.

I've been thinking of another good trip if we get a good dump (mid-winter-ish): Head up to Pinkham, skin up to Hojo's, then ski Sherburne down in powder. Then head up to Wildcat, skin up, or take the quad or something, and head off the back side & ski the Wildcat-Jackson Trail. I think that would be a great tour, although you'd need to find some way to get back. 2 cars? Hitchhiking?
